amazing pictures. welcome to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm john berman. it is tuesday, january 12th. 4:00 a.m. in the east. a democratic face-off in iowa. hillary clinton and bernie sanders. the polls are surprisingly close this morning. clinton with the tiny lead in the latest survey. which explains why she is going directly after her opponent on gun violence to electability. we have brianna keilar with the latest from iowa. >> reporter: good morning. hillary clinton and bernie sanders both here in the hawkeye state as the race tightens. they are at a statistical tie. something bernie sanders is thrilled about and the clinton campaign is not. both candidates trying to draw differences at each other in the black and brown forum.
>> as you know, secretary clinton has been criticizing you. have you noticed lately she is getting more aggressive with you? >> yes. >> why is that? >> i don't know. it could be -- >> you tell me. >> it could be the inevitable candidate for the democratic nomination may not be so inevitable today. >> can you say that bernie sanders cannot win the nomination? >> anybody can win. who would have thought donald trump would be leading in national polls. those of you ever thought about running for president, take heart. >> guns have been playing very large in the democratic race here in the final weeks. hillary clinton taking aim at bernie sanders over his more moderate record. bernie sanders for his part saying that he is opencrime.
john. thank you, brianna. hillary clinton has two events today before heading to detroit. senator sanders is going to washington tonight. he will be in the house for the state of the union address. dramatic shake up of the debate stage overnight. rand paul doesn't like it. fox business network announce seven republicans qualify for the main stage debate in south carolina. donald trump, ted cruise and chris christie and jeb bush and john kasich. rand paul and carly fiorina, who were on the main stage last month. now on the undercard with mike huckabee and rick santorum.
>> we do not think that anyone should really be able to characterize our campaign as anything less than first tier. we raised $25 million. we will be on the ballot in every state. we announced we have 1,000 precinct chairs in iowa. we think it is a rotten thing to do which candidates have a chance and don't. we will not participate. >> donald trump appeared on "the tonight show" going after hillary clinton for trailing bernie sanders in new hampshire polls. >> i think she is having a tough time. she has some guy, i mean, he should be easy to beat. how can you lose like this? he really isn't even a democrat. he said he's a socialist. i think he may be a step beyond a socialist. she is not doing well. she is about tied in iowa. she's losing new hampshire, which is sort of amazing. >> trump not saving all of his fire for clinton.
he went after his closest competitor. ted cruz. sara murray has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. we are weeks away and it is a dead heat between donald trump and ted cruz. a new quinnipiac poll shows he is likely the lead in caucus goers. that is why we are seeing trump go after cruz from everything of he is a true evangelical to his stance on ethanol and his citizenship. >> is he a natural born citizen? i don't know. you cannot have a nominee who will be subject to be thrown out as a nominee. you can't do that. you will make that decision. it is a decision. i'm sure ted is thrilled i'm helping him out, but i am. i am. i mean, he's got to go and he has to fix it. >> reporter: cruz says he is a
natural born citizen because his mother is a citizen. most legal scholars agree. as we see trump ramp up the attacks, he can relish his lead. another poll in new hampshire shows trump drawing 32% support from republican primary voters. that's more than double the 14% support cruz has there. look who else is climbing up. tying for second place is ohio governor john kasich. that same poll showed up one in three gop voters are set on who to support. you can see it is still a very fluid race. back to you, john and christine. >> it is. thank you, sara. with the votes less than three weeks away, trump and jeb bush campaign in iowa and ted cruz stumps in new hampshire. he will join marco rubio in washington for the state of the union. this is the seventh and final state of the union address. the president will not roll out a to-do list of agenda items he
hopes to accomplish the last year in office. his aides say he will rise above election year acrimony and celebrate a vision of one american family. good luck. cnn's jim acosta has more from the white house. >> reporter: the president will talk about the america he hopes to see after he leaves office, but there are still a few things he wants to accomplish. he wants to defect executive action on guns and he wants to close guantanamo bay. as a tribute to the victims of gun violence, there will be an empty seat in the first lady's box. there will be a touch of the nostalgia as he looks back to the 2008 campaign and point to the first supporters, edith ch,
iles. there will not be a long list of issues in the state of the union. acknowledging that time is running down and congress is looking to the next election. jim, you can tune in to cnn's live coverage of the state of the union beginning at 7:00 with erin burnet and followed by ac 360. the address is at 9:00 p.m. the republican response is givenly governor nicki haley. and we have breaking news from turkey this morning. a short time ago, istanbul was rocked by an explosion in the heart of the city. in an area where many western tourists visit. we are getting reports of casualties. the cause of the blast is not yet known. ambulances and police are at the scene of the central square, not
far from the mosque. it is right in the heart of the main tourist hub. suffered a lot of deadly attacks in recent months. that city on edge. we are monitoring the developments. time for an early start on your money. futures, u.s. stock futures pointing lower. world stock markets are mixed. the season as a whole is showing profit is down 5%. crude oil is down $30 a barrel. oil crashed 70% from last summer. while that is great news for drivers, it may not be good nor homeowners. nationwide, home prices are expected to rise. states with economies tied to the energy sector could see a slump in demand for housing. north dakota is at the risk of the backlash. some home prices there are 20%

mexican drug lord el chapo guzman. mexican authorities storming el chapo's safe house in mexico with guns blazing. the most wanted drug fugitive in the world. he slipped away during the government operation and all that gunfire previously. we get more from martin savidge. >> reporter: good morning. a cnn crew was able to gain access to the safe house that belonged to el chapo. this is where the raid took place. no surprise when they got inside. they found the place in shambles. it was a mini war that took place by mexican authorities. it was eventually successful. one of the things that is interesting about the video is it reveals the escape mechanism by which el chapo was able to get out of the house.
in a closet. secreted small set of stairs gets him in the sewer system and the sewer system gets him away from the home. all of that is really revealing as to the detail of planning. we get to the sean penn interview. a lot of controversy about that. mexican authorities said that interview was essential to the capture of el chapo. they don't go into great detail as to why. it is clear that interview in october, somehow led them in the direction of several months later, a safe house in january. still, you have to give credit to the mexican special forces. they made that entry. they conducted it safely. they only had one slight wounded soldier. there were five gunmen killed, but no innocent person on the treat was injured in any way. john and christine. martin, thank you. this morning, four suspects in custody and one at large in the
alleged gang rape of an 18-year-old girl in new york city last week. police say the boys between the ages of 14 and 17 assaulted the victim at a park in brooklyn. the suspects came no rape occurred and whatever happened was consensual. the police released video of the suspects in a store not far from where the attacks took place. a setback for jesse matthew over the disappearance of hannah graham. a police dog detected her scent in his car and apartment. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. lawyers for bill cosby are asking a pennsylvania judge to dismiss sex assault charges against the actor. they claim the d.a. violated the claim not to violate from the case in 2004.
charges were filed weeks before the statute of limitations expired. the lawyer used testimony in the cosby civil suit for the criminal charges. tonya couch, mother of the affluenza teen is expected to be released from bail. a judge lowered her bond to $75,000. she is accused of helping her son flee to mexico after he received a probation sentence after killing four in a drunk driving charge two years ago. we may have snow coming to the northeast. let's get to meteorologist allison chinchar. >> winter is here, john and christine. we have a cold blast of air from the midwest into the northeast. a lot of snow that's coming with it. you can see from the future
future radar coming into the area thursday and friday. accumulations is impressive. widespread. 2 to 4 inches of snow. we will have some areas that could pick up 6 to 8 inches of snow with areas targeting a foot of snow before it is all said and done. take a look at minneapolis. 3 degrees on tuesday. at 29 by the time we get to thursday. chicago, the coldest day will be today. new york, we're going to bottom out on wednesday. same for cities like boston and also into washington, d.c. before we finally start to rebound. thank you. >> snow coming. alabama crimson tide, the kings of college football. they rolled. they held off clemson. they won 45-40 that was fitting

alaska than they will be in the lower 48. we have this cold blast of arctic air coming into the midwest and eventually pushing to the northeast. we have a lot of lake-effect snow coming down. most of the state of ohio is under a winter weather advisory for today and numerous other states as well. we're expecting most areas to pick up a widespread, 2 to 4 inches of snow. starting today, the system carries into wednesday. even thursday of this week. some of those areas right along the great lakes could pick up as much as 10 to 12 inches of snow. again, incredible amounts. they are used to it up there, but not all at once. here is a look at cold temperatures. high temperature in minneapolis, 3 degrees. that's 20 degrees below normal. 20 degrees below normal in chicago with the high of 11. new york, above normal. same for d.c., but that changes tomorrow. thank you, allison.

the poll numbers because the race is too close to call and always has been. >> i thought for the last six months they were neck and neck in both places. i never bought the idea that there was somehow that remember he was up by 15 points in new hampshire and he was down by 15 points. that's not the way this process works as you and i both know. i'm much older than you, but you covered a lot of this. so, i'm not surprised that it is viewed as neck and neck. i'm also surprised if the issue is right. i'm not -- >> why is she struggling? you say we consider she was an overwhelming favorite. >> i think that's part of the reason. >> he's a democratic socialist. >> yeah, but you know, if bernie sanders never said he was a democratic socialist, based on what he is saying, people would not call him a democratic
socialist. that is how he characterizes himself in european terms with the parties in europe. >> why is she having trouble? >> i think that bernie is speaking to a yearning that is deep and real and he has credibility on it. that is the absolute enormous concentration of wealth in a small group of people and the middle class now being able to be shown left out. there used to be a basic bargain. if you contributed to the profitability of the enterprise, you have to share in that profit. productivity is up. wages is down. it is relatively new for hillary to talk about that. hillary's focus is on other things up until now. that is bernie's -- no one questions his authenticity on those issues.
let's get a start on your money. stocks in asia finished mixed. oil prices tumbling. hillary clinton's proposal is a fair share surcharge on top earners. americans making $5 million a year would pay additional 4% tax on that income. the clinton camp says this is expansion on the central idea of the buffett rule who blamed the tax code for the fact he pays a lower rate than his secretary. she has a plan to go after the inequality. one possible running mate for hillary clinton if she secures the nomination. housing secretary julian castro. he was on "the late show" last night. he sat down with me first. i was the warm-up show. this is what he told me about
the housing market for the year. >> i believe it will be better than last year with more opportunity and we should be confident going forward that all of the indicators point to continued growth. >> higher mortgage rates. if mortgage rates rise and the fed keeps raising rates, you are not too concerned they will rise quickly? >> no, i believe we will see relatively stable rates the first half of the year. the fed did raise interest rates, but that has not significantly impacted what somebody is paying on a mortgage. i think that will be the case. >> he sees millennial home buyers this year. young, college educated, urban areas. the average 30-year fixed rate mortgage is still below 4%. >> that is still low. >> i asked if he has been contacted about being her running mate. he said it is premature. >> not that it won't happen and i won't say yes, but that it is early.
