cedar rarads pharmacy's van, and then ran it through the business's garage door. investigators say it happened at reutzel pharmacy on 8th avenue se in the city's medical district.. that's near the mercy medical center. police responded to the pharmacy around 7 o'clock last night, after the owner found the van broken into. investigators say the suspect also burglarized a second vehicle. policicsay 36 year old nicholas hostak was in the building when the police arrived. they say a k-9 took grab of the suspect, causing him to get medical treatment for a bite wound. police say hostak k now charged with 3 counts of 3rd degree burglary and driving while revoked. in federal court in cedar rapids, the sentencing for the founder of midamar corh in the halal beef scandal is expected within the hour. 73 year old bill aossey jr was convicted 7 months ago

charges - including conspacy, making false statements on export certificates and wire fraud. prosecutors says, during the trial, that aossey oversaw a plot in which midamar workers lied about the origin of their products so they could export them to malaysia and indonesia years ago. both nations restrict imports to slaughterhos ues that meet their standards for halal aossey directed employees to swap stickers that made his products appear to come from an omaha slaughterhou se that had the proper certification. a state representativ e from clinton is sponsoring a bill that could mean many of iowa's most violence offenders would see less prison time., the des moines register reports that democrat mary wolfe's bill would see state judges and prosecutors more latitude in determining an appropriate sentence -- instead of following the stricter, mandes guidelines. currently, an offender must serve 70% of a sentence before being eligible for parole. wolfe's bill would cut that to 30 percent

include those convicted of second- degree murder, first or second degree robbery and vehicular homicide. inmates on work release in clayton county must now carry a ew location tracker. last month, the sheriff's office started using a g-p-s system called buddi's smart tad. the water-proof ankle bracelet monitors a work relelese inmate's evevry movv. the sheriff says it prevents inmates from abusing their work release privilege. "there have been some people who have violated the rules and maybe snuck home on their lunch hour, when t`ey are not suppose to go home. " the mandatory bracelet comes at no cost to the tax payer. t if an inmate leaves jaion work release, the county will char that inmate 6 dollars a day t tuse the bracelet. iowa lawmakers are considering a bill that would require local governments and authorities to tell federal agencies when they have illegal immigrants in custody. a submmittee passed the bill afer house republicans proposed it. normally, immigration officers ask local police departments to hold illegal

until federal authorities can pick them up. but some cities and counties are considered sanctuaries. those e e places in the u-s that refuse to hold illegal immigrants after their court ordered detention. the bill would prevent that from happening. according to the center for immigration studies, more thth 20 counties in iowa follow sanctuary policies. that includes linn, johnson, dubuque and benton counties. some iowa veterans are worried about a bill that would legalize the sale and u of fireworks. a senate committee approved the bill on wednesday. the veterans national can cse flashbacksor veterans with post traumatic stress disorder. some are also worried about safety. " organizers say this space is the first of its kind in the state. on a second location cedar pids this spring. backpocket brewing says their experiment brewery will be called backpocket pilot pub. the new business will open at 415 third street se in downtown cedar rids, in building. the company says this location will be used to brew smaller, and more experimental batches than the coralville pub. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. cedar lake supporters now ha a plan to transform the lake into a recreational area for cedar rapids. friends of cedar lake unveiled a master plan at an open house on thursday afternoon. the plans includes asttics like vetative floating islands to amenities like more parking and an overlook. the group is also planning to add artwork to revitalize the area around

good mornindavid geiger. ---- on monday, the iowa caucuses took off and iowa chose it's nber one caidates on the republican and democrat side.. ted cruz won the most votes on the republican side for a victory here at just under 28 percent... which came as aisappointment to renewable fuel standard voters.. the iowa renewable fuel association says they had discussions with many of the candidates here in the state.e. and in n e weeks before the caucus.. senator cruz changed his tone on ethanol.. including putting in a positive op-ed into the des moines register. "now he never did embrace the rfs that is true, the renewable fuel standard, but tried to portray himself as r ethanol, forigher blends, for knocking down the blend wall. just not for the rfs." shaw says 85 percent of voters

pro-rfs candidates.. more than the last caucus. and while cruz won.. his vote total was under 30 percent.. which is less than majority.. only two other republicans have won an iowa caucus vote. shows an unclear outlook for the nation's economy. u-s employers added 151,000 jobs in january. the labor r partment says these jobs gains were only enough for the unemployment rate to fall from 5% to 4.9%. those numbers reflect a slowdown in hiring and also a drop of jobs in the education, transportation, and temp worker sectors. now with only 4 days left until the new hampshire primary, the debates fill the evenings. tomorrow night, the republicans meet -- but last night, democrats hillary clinton and bernie sanders debated over the economy and the best path forward. abc's marci gonzalez takes a look back. package script: today - back on the trail- after - a fierernight on the debate stage- sot: clinton: "let's talk about the

the republican presidential candidates will meet in manchester, new hampshire for a debate tomorrow. abc's david muir and martha raddatz will moderate the debate. you can watch it right here on saturday at seven on tv-9. a massive crane collapse in new york city killed one person this morning. fwre officials say it happened this morning around 8-25 in lower manhattan. the crane can be seen landing across several parked cars, stretching across most of one block. there are no details yet on what caused thcrane to fall. at least 2 otherereople are seriously injured. automaker, honda, is recalling 5.7 million cars worldwide because of exploding airbags. this announcement is part of a latesesseries of recalls involving takata air bag inflators, which can explode and send shrapnel into vehicles.

vehicles are in the u-s. at least 11 ople have died from the problem and 139 have been injured. we're still awaiting more information from the state patrol on the deadly crash in benton county yesterday that killed 3 people. investigators say that reaching family members of the victims is taking longer than usual because they had to search outside the u.s. a minivan and a pick-up truck crashed around 5-15 yesterday morning, on highway 30, just east of 16th avenue. that's near keystone. the state patrol says the driver of the minivan carrying 10 people lost control. another vehicle then hit the minivanancausing 2 other vehicles to crash. three people from the cedar rapids area, who were all inside the minivan, died at the scene. investigators have not released their names yet. trooper bob conrad with the iowa state patrol says while it appears ice didiplay a role, he says it also seems the driver of the minivan failed to maintain control. he says the van was also overloaded. cathy cutler

district office says they had road crews on the same stretch of highway 30 during and after the storm that hit earlier this week. trooper conrad says all 3 people killed were not wearing seat belts, andnd of them were ejected from the vehicle. the student organization. this is ava swift. she's a healthy 6 year old,d,ho has been through a real battle. when ava was 6 months old, her parents noticed something strange. 4:01 "when we fed her she would like sweat, like her head would sweat on our arm, she would sweat when sheoke up, but being our first child we didn't know if that's normal." as time went on they noticed her stomach was swelling. they went to multiple specialists who said ava was fine. until one recommended the family make the trip from their home in northwest iowa, to the children's hospital. 5:13 "they started test right away, and that's when they told us she was diagnosed with stage 4, neuroblastoma." that would send the family on a year long journey featuring 14 chemo treatments, and surgery. whwhh can be devastating to watch a child go through. 5:59 "to a mother, like i was in the bathroom, crying, vomiting because i'm like quit hurting my child." swift says ava took it like a champ, and walked away cancer free. dudung this year's dance marathon, ava w wl walk across the stage for her five year graduation from the cancer program. it's kids like ava, that make these kids want to dance. and those dancers help the hospital do amazing things. 23:40- "this is revolutionizing how we are treating cancer in the year 20101 and dance
