taking scalia's spot? for those queueions we turn to kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders. forrest, kelly has had a long career working in cedar rapids? yeah, but she's from indiana. kelly was born and raised in greencastle. from there she went to duke for her ba. then, she graduated with distinction from harvard law in '91. one of her classmates, you'll recognize. jane kelly didn'n'know it at the time, her classmate at harvard law would later appoint her to the u.s. court of appeals, president barak obama. kelly and the president graduated from the school in '91. after, she clerked for two federal judges. kelly then spent time serving as a federal public defender. nat tragedy in 2004. while jogging the cedar river trail, a man brutally

creek. police haven't found her attacker. kelly recovered incident in 2005. "i think i saw a rock in his hand. after that, i don't remember." take an 8th circuit spot. she was quickly confirmed by the senate, 96-0. "she's very smart. very dedecated. she's very hard working." judge michael melloy has known kelly for more than 20 years. in fact, she took the seat he left. "i think that the fact that she has a background as a public defender would be unique on the supreme court. and also that she has had trial experience." political scientists think it will be an uphill battle for kelly. scalia was known as a solilisupreme court to avoid losing the spot to a more liberal judge, the gop who controls the senate, is threatening to wait out any of obama's nominations until a new process is reset. of the republicans kelly will have to get past to reach the supreme court spot. he's chair of the senate oversees the

in a t-v nine follow-up... iowa state patrol expects everyone injured in this 33-car pile up to survive. they say slick roads likely led to the chain-reaction crash. it happened around noon in the westbound lanes of interstate 80 near west bbnch yesterday. two semi drivers and another person were injured. one is still in serious condition. iowa state patrol says one semi driver had to get stitches aftft the cab detatched and slid likeke toboggan. a second semi driver was pinned in his cab for an hour after slamming into another semi. firefighters pulled two people from a burning mobile home this morning. the fire was at 3707016th avenue southwest. 72 year old ronald jacobs died at the scene. authorities took his wife, 72 year old karen jacobs, to mercy medical center before transferring her to another hospital.

mobile home when firefighters arrived just after 7:30 a-m. but the fire never got large enough to threaten any nearby mobile homes. one long time resident at the mobile home park says the jacobs couple had lived there for about 45 years. he knew both had health issues, which might have slowed them down if they were trying to escape. " he was on oxygen, and he liked to cook in the mornings, cook breakfast and stuff like that... but i don't know what happened or whatever." investigators have not found the cause of the fire yet. one battalion chief said he does not know if the oxygen tanks they found side the mobile home played any role in the fire. firefighters found a 25 year old man's body after a house fire in north english. when they responded around 8:30 last night, firefighters found the second story of austin watson's home on fire. the state medical examiner will perform an

cause of the fire is under investigation. a grant county, wisconsin man died this weekend when he slipped from a moving truck. the sheriff's office says the incident happened about 1:15 a-m friday to the area of county road u and dutch hollow road. they say 19 year old kyle vosberg was with three friends when he tried to drive&his truck while standing on its running boards. vosrg fell while trying to get back inside the truck. the sheriff's department says a serious head injury killed him. offenses. that's what students and staffers have filed against the midwest academy in keokuk over the past three years. the midwest academy is a boarding school for troubled teenagers. law officers raided the school on january 28th after allegations that a staff member had sexually assaulted a student. in addition to that claim, the iowa department of human services has

reportedly have evidence to back them up. the state is taking a closer look than ever before at iowa's prisons. it's looking for innocent people, who mayayave been falsely convicted. this comes as a record 149 people were exonerated last year in the u-s. kcrg nine's iowa city bureau chief mark carlson joins us live. mark, what is the state doing to make sure there are no innocent people sitting in iowa's prisons? they have a few things going on, beth. legal experts here in iowa say they're sure there are innocent people sitting in iowa's prisons right now. late last year governor branstad created the wrongful conviction division at the state defenders s fice. that was in response to the f-b-i admitting they put too much trust in bad hair analysis techniques for decades. the state has already identified roughly 80 cases of prisoners that are deserving of a

analysis played a role in their convictions. this all mes at a time when true crime documentarie s, like the netflix series mamang a murderer, have e ver been momo popular. officials say they think many prisoners will ask for case reviews because of all this attention on the legal system. "everybody is talking about these issues, and it's fantastic so it's not just us in the legal community that realize sometimes innocent people get sentenced and convicted of things they didn't do, but now everybody knows. the man who police say was driving a bus that struck and killed an iowa state student in december pleaded not guilty today. benjamin clague's attorney entered the written plea in story county court this morning. police say clague was driving the cy ride campus bus... ...last december that killed 18-year-old emmalee jacobs while she was crossing a campus intersection. police say after the crash, clague drove away and continued his route.

clague faces several charges including leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and failure to obey a traffic control device. a judge has scheduled his pre-trial conference for next month. the virtual soldier research program at the university of iowa has received a two point six million dollar grant. the grgrt from the office of naval research will help create a simulation program to prevent injuries to u-s marines. the university's virtual human model, santos, will help create software that will allow marines to use their own characteristics like height, weight, and strength. the simulation program will be able to accurately predict injuries and help recommend training for individual marines. "in 2006 there was 1.9 million injuries just in the u.s. marines. so if we're able to reduce that just by 20 or 30 percent, then that would be fantastic.
