((dave courvoisier)) and preparations to keep things fun and safe around town -- including the las vegas strip -- are getting done now so hundreds of thousands of people can ring in the new year locally. ((paula francis)) 8 news now reporter mauricio marin is live from the hardrock cafe on the las vegas strip with the very latest. ((mauricio marin)) i've been hanging out here all afternoon. you can really feel the energy and excited of people from all over the world ready to have a
but to make the magic happen...there's been a whole lot of work going on. at mccarran international airport---crews have been working to get flights in and out with much delay. there's alot of people rushing into town to ring in the new year---vegas style. and on the strip where tens of thousands of people are expected....work ers have put in porta-potties where crowds are night. additionally---g ates are starting to go up along the strip where roads will be closing down in about an hour. folks visiting for new year's eve say vegas has really been welcoming to them. (( mitch siegal/nye visitor: "you can't get better food and entertainment." the west, we're from the east coast. happy. west coast they're laid back and happy they want to be your friend especially on nye. )) in terms of security...metro police aren't taking any chances. they've got about 14- hundred and downtown.
crowds. and are asking people...if you see something that doesn't look right...report it right away. ((paula francis)) > a luxury hotel caught on fire -- lighting up downtown dubai's skyline just ahead of its elaborate new year's eve celebration and fireworks display. government officials say one attack.. when a stampede broke out as the building was evacuated. 14 hotel residents were treated at the scene for minor injuries. c-b-s reporter chris martinez has the details. < massive flames engulfed the "address hotel" -- a luxury highrise in downtown dubai in the united arab emirates. those inside said a fire alarm went off to alert them. (( voice of irene proimos/ was inside hotel -- cbsn phoner)) "it was a bit nerve-wrecking because i didn't know what was going on." the 63-story
located near the world's tallest skyscraper, - the burj khalifa, - where tens of thousands gathered for massive fireworks display to usher in the new year. (11 sec) the fire broke out two hours before midnight. officials rushed to evacuate the skyscraper as enormous flames ripped through the building. consuming at least 20 floors - in a matter of minutes. burning debris fell from the building...as four squads of firefighters raced to contain the blaze. crowds could heard several explosions. responsible party, and what corrective action is needed. the fire marshal reported yesterday to state officials that no radioactivity was detected and no injuries were reported after the october 18th blast and fire. /// ((paula francis)) > the mississippi river is cresting in the midwest. mountain, flamingo and tropicana. roads and alleys leading westbound onto the strip between sahara and mandalay bay from koval lane will begin around 5:45 pm. between six and six-thirty pm, metro will close down las vegas boulevard between sahara and mandalay bay. the plan is to have the strip fully open to pedestrian traffic around six-thirty pm. that's also the time all moving walkways, elevators and escalators on the strip will be shut off. i-15 and the strip are expected to reopen around three-thirty, after clean-up. streets like sahara, desert inn, frank sinatra, koval and russell will be your friends. those roads will remain open through the evening, as well as us 95 and 215. harmon access to las vegas guests. fremont shuts down at four pm and reopens at six pm, in preps for the celebration.
