blocked off maple valley street... which is about a block away from where this happened. ((sharie johnson)) > metro police are at the scene of a deadly shooting involving a police officer near desert inn and cimarron roads. the shooting occurred on gilded crown court around 2 p.m. according to metro, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. police went to the address at the request of u.s. marshals for assistance with a wanted suspect, metro police said. there are no reported injuries to officers. sharie... the other big story of the day of course... it's new year's eve. in dubai... things got off to a rough start... when a fire consumed a 63- story luxury hotel. one person died of a heart attack during evacuations... 14 others were injured. no word on what caused the fire. ((paula francis)) despite the flames... new years celebrations went on, with fireworks shot off nearby the fire, from the world's tallest building... which is just blocks away from the burning hotel.

first off will be the i-15 interchanges at spring mountain flamingo and tropicana. metro should begin clearing the strip in the next half hour to 45 minutes. the plan is to clear the strip and have it open by 6:30pm for the hundreds of thousands of reveled who will begin the new year right herein our valley. everyone seems to be minding their manners at this time... but things will get crazier as the night progresses. right now you are dealing with traffic on your surface streets.... people are making their way into grocery stores and liquor stores for the last minute celebration items. i will be out here all night on the strip guiding you through it all....

((dave courvoisier)) > w'ere hours away from the new year. new year. and the las vegas strip is minutes away from opening the main road to hundreds of thousands of people ready to party. 8 news now's mauricio marin is live with the latest on road closures and security measures. ((mauricio marin)) the fun is coming alive for new year's eve on the las vegas strip. in just hours the fireworks will be going off over the strip. the sidewalks are crowded out here. and in a few minutes police will be letting people onto the boulevard itself to ring in 2016.

road closures are now in effect for the rest of the night as more than 330- thousand people are expected to celebrate on the strip and downtown. right now---barriers have been set up. freeway exit ramps onto the strip from interstate 15 are closed off. now police are in the process of turning off moving walkways, elevators and escalators on the strip. in the next half hour---metro police should be letting people pour onto las vegas boulevard from sidewalks here on the strip. as people get ready to celebrate...they 're already looking forward to the best in 20-16. hundred officers on the strip and downtown. plus undercover officers. are out in the cold this new year's eve.. after an early morning fire. it happened near vegas valley drive and maryland parkway. the affected families are receiving help from the red cross. but as karen castro found out, some of them are having a hard time finding a place to stay. < ((karen castro)) an entire apartment building is vacant after a fire forces more than 36 residents out of their homes in the middle of the night. ((kimberly morrow - displaced by fire: when i ran outside, i had no jacket, no shoes, nothing, i just grabbed the kids and the dog and ran outside.)) ((karen castro)) among those displaced... are more than a dozen children. the red cross has stepped in to help by providing financial support to families. debit cards have been handed out for food and shelter. but it may not be easy finding a hotel room on one of the busiest nights of the year. ((kimberly morrow - displaced by fire: i understand that they're trying to find some place warm but yeah, they have to be careful wit what they're doing because it's not just them. they're putting people's lives at risk by doing what they do.)) ((chris maathuis)) the rebels stinging loss last night to an average mountain west team is very disturbing. when fresno state turns 21 unlv turnovers into 33 points, something is wrong in every corner of the program. it's not just the coaches or the players... it's a culture, a mindset, a habit and-or desire. with arguably the most talent in the league, unlv doesn't consistantly play like it. silly, foolish and sometimes head scratching decisions from players who've played a lot of basketball. who knows if the coaching staff can pry into the minds of these kids, who have been given the green light seemingly on any shot regardless of the circumstances or in this case the distance from the basket. lapse of common sense and urgency was on display down the stretch last night... shot clock violation, turnovers and their biggest nemisis, giving up offensive rebounds.. the guy who tipped in the go ahead basket for fresno had five offensive boards by himself. ((chris maathuis)) speaking of 2015... it's been another terrific year in local sports... i put together my top 10 local sports stories of 2015... starting with number 10. nats number 10... the unlv stadium talk... the state spending thousands of dollars hiring a consultant to reveal all the benefits of an on campus stadium. it's been tweeked, debated and put on hold, but recently land was purchased near the mgm just in case. number 9... bishop gorman football... kenny sanchez takes over for his brother tony and the private school wins its 7th straight state title, spanking the 2nd best team in the state and winning back to back mythical national championships. at number 8... the ufc's notorious conor mcgregor predicting he'd become a star in 2015 and caps the year with a 13 second knockout of jose aldo, who hadn't lost a fight in 10 years. that's why he calls himself mystic mac. to number 7... former gorman high school coach tony sanchez rolls through his first year as a dvision 1 college coach and changes the look and feel of the program.
