tonight, police are searching for the suspect. ((paula francis)) vanessa murphy is live near centennial and lamb. ((vanessa murphy)) i talked with a loved one earlier who said the victim leaves behind a wife and children. police told us a couple of children were at the home in this gated community where the deadly shooting took place. (( )) ((deborah dillard: it's really a shame on new year's day.)) ((vanessa murphy)) deborah dillard came home from work and found this crime scene in this north las vegas gated community where she lives. police say a 44 year old man was shot dead in his home after an argument with another man... that suspect then took off. ((deborah: i know that we always say that things like this can never happen but it happens all the time and it happens everywhere. i'm just like really sorry for the family.)) ((vanessa murphy)) according to police, family members, including a couple of children were at the home when the deadly shooting took place on this new year's day. ((officer aaron patty/north las

unfortunate especially being the first day of new years. we were happy it was fairly quiet last night but this is no way to start a new year.)) ((vanessa murphy)) detectives spent friday afternoon interviewing witnesses...peop le nearby who heard at least one gunshot here on smoky fog near centennial and lamb.... and relatives. ((deborah: it's sad for the children that was involved, especially if they've seen the shooting. it's really bad, cause i have grandchildren. i wouldn't want my grandchildren subjected to anything of that sort.)) ((vanessa murphy)) anyone with information is asked to call crimestoppers. police have not released a suspect description. paula? ((paula francis)) vanessa, what was the relationship between the victim and suspect? ((vanessa murphy)) paula, police told us they working to figure that out - but again - it appears they knew each other./// ((paula francis)) > police are searching for a suspect... they say, shot a person at an apartment complex this evening. it happened near arville and desert inn around 7:20. according to metro... the victim is expected to survive.

figure out what led up to the shooting. if you have any information... you're asked to call crimestoppers. /// ((dave courvoisier)) > a family is demanding answers... after officers shot and killed a man in west las vegas. metro police mistook a cell phone for a gun... yesterday afternoon near desert inn and cimarron... when they opened fire. they say the man was wanted for several violent felonies out of arizona... including attempted murder. we talked to the family of the suspect... keith childress. according to them... what police are saying... doesn't add up. (( nicolas mann, brother of keith childress, "everyone's here mourning and hurting and the things that have been said are not accurate at all and we want the truth, we want justice." )) ((dave courvoisier)) according to metro... their officers arrived to provide back up for u-s marshals who we're conducting surveillance on the suspect. investigators say he was hiding something in his right hand... and refused to obey commands. (( capt. matt mccarthy, lvmpd, "because the officers believed the suspect was wanted for attempt murder and this was a residential area and because

firearm, they discharged their firearm upon the subject striking him several times." )) ((dave courvoisier)) according to metro... they we're told by marshals the man was wanted for attempted murder. our online public records search shows a keith childress of arizona was convicted of several crimes including aggravated assault, burglary and armed robbery but he failed to show up for the verdict. that's why and a warrant was issued for his arrest. we sent a records request to arizona city, county and state officials to confirm what we found online. /// ((dave courvoisier)) > it was a pretty quite new year's eve for metro. despite thousands and thousands of people hitting the strip and downtown to party... officers only made 8 arrests on the strip... including one for a possible felony. two others were arrested on fremont street. the clark county fire department responded to about 55 calls in the area for medical and alcohol-related issues, including a man who had a heart attack outside of harrah's. las vegas fire and rescue said they had 97 calls between the time the ball dropped and 7:30 this morning.

((paula francis)) > heading up to the spring mountains is a great way to get a little taste of winter. but it's turning out to be a dangerous affair... for those using a popular sledding area. lee meadows hasn't seen fresh snow since christmas eve. with hundreds of people sledding there... the snow's become compacted and is turning it into ice... which can be very dangerous. (( erica hupp - spring mountains natural recreation area, "right now, since the snow is so packed there's tons of rocks out on the hill and tree stumps, and trees and so you really need to pay attention to where your kids are sledding and make sure it's a safe location." )) ((paula francis)) one sledder... a man in his 60's... slammed into a tree, knocking him unconscious. a medical crew loaded him on an ambulance and took him to the hospital. people leaving garbage behind create another big problem. authorities urge visitors to pick up their trash and broken sleds in order to keep the area nice. if not... citations for littering can cost close to 3-hundred dollars. /// ((paula francis)) > looks like we may be starting out the new year... with some wet weather.

he'll bypass lawmakers... to act on gun control. ((dave courvoisier)) c-b-s reporter chip reid breaks down what the president plans to do. < it was just after the mass shooting at an oregon community college in october that the president decided he had to take executive action on guns. he made the announcement today in his weekly address posted on the white house website. (obama) "i directed my team at the white house to look into any new actions i can take to help reduce gun violence. and on monday, i'll meet with our attorney general, loretta lynch, to discuss our options." sources tell cbs news those options include: -- expanding the definition of who is "in the business" of selling guns so that more gun sales trigger background checks, and -- requiring enhanced reporting and tracking of lost and stolen guns. today the president blamed the republican congress for giving him no choice but to take unilateral action. (obama) we know that we can't stop every act of violence. but what if we tried to stop even one? what if congress did something - anything - to

violence? last month senate republicans blocked democratic proposals that would: -- prevent people on the terror watch list from buying guns, and -- require background checks for on- line gun purchases. (the nra did not respond to our request for a comment, but when the details of the presidents plans are announced, which could be as early as early as next week, the response from gun rights supporters is expected to be furious. chip reid, cbs news, hawaii.) > ((dave courvoisier)) > meanwhile some states are taking action on their own. in california a new gun control law took effect today allowing judges to order the seizure of guns from people deemed dangerous by their own family or by law enforcement. texas, though, is going in the other direction on gun control . the new law now allows those with a concealed weapons permit to carry their holstered weapons in plain view. in tarrant county which encompasses forth worth... an armed group of supporters handed out flyers letting people

first 2016... and that means we're now officially in an election year. as reporter mary moloney explains, some candidates are making it their resolution... to switch up their political strategies... to attract more voters. at the rose bowl parade friday -- skywriters weren't focused on football. instead set sights on republican presidential frontrunner -- donald trump. the message -- "america is great. trump is disgusting," trump -- known for his biting insults -- hasn't been shy on the trail or on twitter writing...

and re- tweet to millions about @jebbush when he is so low in the polls?" because of his big $ hit ads on me!" those ads irritate trump (donald trump/(r) presidential candidate): "it bothers me when i see a guy spending, you know $60 million on ads against me, a lot of it, right?" trump vowing to start spending about $2 million a week to ensure victory. (donald trump/(r) presidential candidate): "i'm going to start spending. i don't want to take any chances." for his part -- jeb bush canceled pricey ad buys -- moved staff to early voting states -- and insisted trump will fall. (jeb bush/(r) presidential candidate): "we're living in this reality tv kind of political environment where he fills the space by saying outrageous things. i think the -- the emotion of the here and now will subside." ben carson overhauled his staff -- losing three top aids. his team says the campaign is gaining energy. on the other side of the political aisle -- hillary clinton will bring her not-so-secret weapon -- president bill clinton -- on the campaign trail. but she may not change much in the new year. friday -- her campaign announced it raised $112 million dollars for the primaries-- since officially jumping into the race

both republican and democratic candidates will hit the trail monday -- marking the new phase in the new year. i'm mary moloney reporting. ((paula francis)) > it's been a seismically active year in our area. scientists at u-n-r recorded more than 17- thousand- 500 earthquakes in nevada and eastern california. according to the nevada seismological laboratory, the area surrounding sheldon wildlife refuge in northwest nevada was the biggest source of the state's earthquakes. out of the thousands of quakes... there were only 19 that had a magnitude of 4- point-oh or larger. if you remember... last january... a 4- point-8 magnitude quake was felt in las vegas. the earthquake jostled the rubber seal in a joint on the spaghetti bowl, causing it to rip. // ((dave courvoisier)) > a cold evening, but not as windy as new years eve. ((paula francis)) tedd florendo has a look at weather. < started off cold this morning and not too much of an improvement this afternoon as we're still chilly today with clearer skies. winds have calmed down

.................. ................... ........................ current temps right now in the high 40's across the region with colder temps up on mount charleston. mid 40's only this afternoon for the far northwest and west sections of the valley and milder over to the east andd& southeast sections of town. .... ........................... ...... .... regional temps in the mid 50's for mesquite down to laughlin. 50's for pahrump this afternoon after very cold temps overnight. cold already for tonopah all the way to pioche already below freezing. ...................... ............... ............. u.s. temps really are cold through many of the lower 48 state. with temps finally colder than us in new york. and even atlanta and dallas. still warm and nice down in miami. ......................... ............ .............. clear skies for now with some additional cloud cover coming in from the west, but we're tracking several storm this week that will march in one after the other, sort of like a parade of storms bring plenty of precip along with them. it's looking like we'll have a very unsettled week all next week.

resort.)) > ((dave courvoisier)) > iconic r&b star natalie cole is dead at the age of 65. the grammy winner and daughter of the legendary nat king cole reportedly passed away in a los night. cole had a successful kidney transplant in 2009...her kidney troubles date back to 2008, when she was diagnosed with hepatitis c and had aggressive chemotherapy to fight the virus. cole attributed the illness to her struggles with cocaine and heroin. she had been sober for some time following stints in a

have come up with an interesting way... to get rid of their christmas trees. a lot of people are taking trees to the company goats on the go . all people have to do is drop off their tree at the farm.. and watch the animals devour it. while goats are known to eat all types of strange foods... farmer aaron steele asks people to remove the tinsel and
