how installing a smart door bell can help you fight back against crime. /// now, nevada's first choice for news, this is 8 newsnow, weekend edition ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) > it's was a wet and rainy day today in the valley. the storm even resulted in some major damage to at least one home. clark county fire officials say lightning struck a tree... which caught fire and spread to a house. it happened around 3:00 this afternoon... in the las vegas country club estates. that's near desert inn and paradise. there were no people inside the home at the time... but firefighters did save two cats. damages to the home are estimated at about 200- thousand dollars. thanks for joining us tonight... i'm patranya bhoolsuwan. the chances of rain and lightning aren't over quite yet. mauricio marin is live from mccarran... where this storm system is causing travel delays... all over the southwest. but first let's check in with

have been delayed arriving and taking off. it's not just because of wet weather here but because of rain in california and arizona as well. looking at the flight status board...some flights coming in from san francisco and san diego were delayed from about an hour or but in some cases up to two hours. rain, low clouds and even wind were a factor for some delayed flights. right now the federal aviation administration's website shows delays are down to about 15 minutes or less. but we've gotten reports of flights in reno getting delayed and even cancelled because of the heavy snow fall up there. one passenger we talked with tonight says he's glad to finally be here. (( gage miller/flight delayed: "i guess the wind was so bad that like we got delayed an extra hour and a half to here las vegas and yeah when i looked at my phone there was thunderstorms here but now it's partly cloudy so it's pretty cool but definitely had to wait a little extra time in the terminal." ))

valley...the rain kept falling which kept roads sleek and slippery. driving around town...we saw a number of car crashes with nevada highway patrol troopers responding this evening. even a crash slowing down traffic near the spaghetti bowl that has since cleared. criss-crossing iowa to seal the deal... begging their backers to caucus on monday night. (bernie sanders) "monday could be an historic night for this country." democrats bernie sanders and hillary clinton are seperated by just three points in the latest poll. martin o'malley is in a distant third. if his supporters jump ship they could be the deciding factor on the gop side donlad trump has a slight lead over ted cruz. (cruz) "commit tomorrow night to come out and caucus for us." on the campaign trail, his tour bus got suck in the mud and needed a tow. trump campaigned with the reverand jerry falwell jr - trying to win over evangalicals. they are one of the most reliable groups to caucus. (weijia jiang/cbs news/waukee iowa) political experts say this late in the game... volunteers should not be trying to change people's minds...but making sure already committed voters actually show up on caucus night. bus died while attempting to cross the road. it happened around 6:00 this morning... near camino al norte and lone mountain. according to north las vegas police... a 44- year old man got off bus and crossed in- front of it. investigators spoke with witnesses who said he was in a hurry to catch another bus... when he was then blind-sided by a car. the driver stayed on scene and

so far, 20- people have died in a traffic related crash in clark county. that's 5 more than where we were this time last year./// ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) > the man critically injured in a mobile home fire yesterday... has succumb to his injuries. it happened in north las vegas... near carey and pecos. once they arrived... fire fighters found the man inside the burning tailer. he was taken to the hosptail... where he later died. /// ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) > 2 college students have been arrested in connection with the death of a 13 year old girl in virginia. authorities discovered the body of nicole lovell this weekend off a north carolina highway. virginia tech freshman david eisenhauer has been arrested for her abduction and murder. sophomore natalie keepers for helping to dispose of her body. nicole's father went on social media after the teens disappearance last week begging for her to come home. massive battery factory under construction in northern nevada... has set his sights on much bigger ambitions . in addition to being the c-e-o of tesla... he's also the head of space-x. and his ultimate goal... getting humans to mars... to better the chances of survival for mankind. catch the criminals in the act. it's called ring video doorbell. valley resident nikolaus rotzinger caught someone taking a mail package from his doorstep three days after installing the technology. he's still amazed at how daring the suspect was to committ the crime in broad daylight. >ndot crews will be hitting it hard tonight around the spaghetti bowl for preliminary work with project neon. project neon is the 1.5 billion project aimed to solve all of the issues in the spaghetti bowl. work will require closures, so expect to see the mlk ramp to southbound 95 shut down for several hours overnight between nine pm and five am. monday night, crews will close the northbound i- 15 ramp to mlk to dig utility trenches. i will remind you about this monday. monday is the start of february, which means the county will be starting up a major flood control/widening project on rainbow. those in the southwest valley should get ready for delays in between sunset and russell as crews carry out work. expect lane restrictions along this busy stretch. there are a few schools in this area and plenty of local businesses. i will remind you guys about

celebration at civic center park ---- pretty big crowd --- they got to hear from the mayor and watch big screen video of the broncos getting on their team plane for the trip to san francisco (the fans there look a mile high, wouldn't you say?) meanwhile in charlotte north caroli --- nascar season can wait another week --- they are fired up about their panthers--- this morning in charlotte north carolina --- panthers fans they sent their team off to san francisco. their plane arrived safely as well. the rebels take to the road for two games this week --- at new mexico on tuesday and at fresno on saturday --- they might be without one of their big men, ben carter carter went down in last nights game against san diego state --- he was in a lot of pain and it showed --- the crowd went silent

the game --- rebels struggled inside after the injury. early word is that carter sprained his knee --- he will have an mri tomorrow to see if its anything worse than that. this will be a tough injury for the rebels --- not sure how long carter will be out ---- the results of the mri will give us some idea. the crazy weather out west here caused some problems on the golf course today --- thats acually an understatement --- they needed scuba gear today at torey pines in san diego --- playing the north course today --- at least, i think it looks sort of like the north course --- final round of the farmers insurance open. but the wind, the rains the stormy sea did not stop michael kim who hits in from the sand --- he's from san diego -- jimmy
