lot of american beers been drunk but it's also huge overseas. we take you live to san francisco to find out how the big game has turned into a big cash cow internationally for the n-f-l./// < news music voice over: "now, nevada's first choice for news. this is 8 news now at 6." > ((dave courvoisier)) > a 9-1-1 dispatch center... usually receives about 300 calls a day... and those callers expect an answer within seconds. ((dave courvoisier)) thanks for joining us... i'm dave courvoisier. ((denise valdez)) and i'm denise valdez... in for paula. that's not what locals experienced yesterday... when some people had to wait for nearly an hour to talk to a dispatcher. ((dave courvoisier)) vanessa murphy was at a media briefing earlier at metro police headquarters. that's where she's reporting live.... ((vanessa murphy)) we learned the system that failed is a new system...that the department is paying more than seven and a half million dollars for over the next ten years. metro and the 911 company called airbus are working to figure out how the failure happened.
6:01 pm
say they have heard from people expressing their anger over the 911 failure which may have left some callers waiting 30 to 50 minutes. here's what assistant sheriff tom roberts told us: it is unclear how many callers were affected over the six hour period. calls were dispatched to henderson and north las vegas where metro staffers went to help answer the rerouted calls after the problem was discovered around 3:30 tuesday afternoon. the industry standard for 911 is for a call to be answered in ten seconds.... but yesterday callers could have waited 30 to fifty minutes. and before calls were rerouted,, some calls were dropped. roberts apologized to the community. he said it is unlikely a failure like this would happen again. there is additional monitoring and staffing though just in case and to also help figure how the failure happened. he said foul play has been ruled out though.
6:02 pm
roberts/metro police: well that was definitely a concern for us last night with everything that's going on in the world today. we were told immediately by airbus, they can monitor firewalls remotely, and that was not the issue yesterday. that was definitely our major concern.)) ((vanessa murphy)) the assistant sheriff told us the old 911 system was upgraded and replaced in december because it was out of date. and there was a failure last summer on that old system. back to you. ((dave courvoisier)) vanessa, was that a similar failure? ((vanessa murphy)) yes, we're told it was the same result where calls had to be rerouted and callers experienced delays... but the failures are for different reasons. last summer, the problem was outdated technology. last night - there was a technical issue - but this is on new equipment....agai n, the reason is still unclear. february 15th the 8 on your side hotline is flooded with calls from angry cupids who say their valentine's day delivery was a disappointment. ((denise valdez)) so this year our consumer advocate michelle mortensen is here with some tips... to make sure you get what you pay for. michelle. ((michelle mortensen)) there's really 2 problems people face. they either ordered an arrangement online that looks nothing like the picture ... or what they ordered didn't arrive on time. either way it's no good. it was such a problem last year people took to social media blasting companies for their valetine's day fails. so how can you avoid this happening to you? first .. buy local. tell them what you can afford and ask for the biggest most colorful arrangement at that price point. i tested this out in 2013 in an 8 on your side investigation ... and the local florist arrangements i ordered were bigger... prettier.. and lasted longer than the online versions ...
6:11 pm
one more tip... ask to see a picture of the arrangement before its deleivered. that way you can make a change if something isn't right. and .. if you do have to order online ... check the measurements. the picture of a $20 bouquet might look amazing ... but meaurements won't lie. it could be quite small at that price. ((michelle mortensen)) my last tip .. valentine's day falls on a sunday ... so send your gift early. no one will complain. it's only a problem when you're late. and i do have a few valentine gift deals for you on my coupon page. just go to las vegas now dot com and click on 8 on your side to check them out. thompson is 11-1 and hoping eventually to get a title shot. as for hendricks this is just the second time has fought since he lost the title to robbie lawler in 2014. top job, but coach tony sanchez see stanton as --- possibly --- the quarterback of the future for the rebels. ((tony sanchez, 2nd year unlv coach: "it happens. you know i think there is a guy playing on sunday that started at florida that had to go to junior college and then went to auburn. it's one of those deals. sometimes, when you walk into a situation, it doesn't fit for nobody's fault, no particular reason. it just is not a good fit. i don't think it was for him over there. so he went back to saddleback and gained his confidence back and became the johnny stanton i remember watching and talking to in high school. we got some guys who he's going to have to compete with but we are really excited we got him." )) dave courvoisier > thanks for watching for 8 news now at 6. we're always on at las vegas now dot com and our app ... along with facebook and twitter. paula francis see you tonight at 11. goodnight.///
