they drove her to her home and ransacked. . but we've learned they've been arrested thanks to the help from neighbors. cheryl hurd is in san leandro. >> plus stood the evening trying to track down the people who stole this woman's car and robbed her. >> the young man pushed me down, grabbed my keys and took off with the car. >> a carjacking in front of the dollar star at san leandro at 1:30 this morning. >> they took a bank that my husband gave me that had all kinds of antique coins and stuff in it. >> shaken up and badly bruised, row marie quickly called police. while she was reporting the attack to authorities, another call came in to dispatch. >> the police were investigating the carjacking itself and getting information from the woman who had her car stolen.
somebody else from the neighborhood where she resides called in to report a burglar in progress at her house. >> police believe the carjackers got her address from the registration in her car. the neighbors wrote down the license plate of the getaway car and they tracked down the suspects at another strip mall. >> this could have been planned that they went from one shopping sen tr to do the carjacking, went right back to that lady's house and they were caught cruising through nor shopping center, quite possibly looking for another victim. >> the police found the victim's kia optima similar to this one about 200 yards away from where the original crime happened. a relief for family members who were still upset. >> she was by herself, she's a senior, she's obviously vulnerable and somebody took
advantage of that. >> two men in their 20s are behind bars tonight. they face several charges including burglary, carjacking and elder abuse. nbc bay area news. >> we're also following a house fire in san jose. take a look. this quickly escalated to three alarms. firefighter himself to literally stay back about 100 feet because the second floor of that home was at risk of caving in. it started shortly after 8:00 this evening in san jose's willow neighborhood. the burning embers them jumped to a rooftop four houses down. the situation was extremely dangerous. pg & e also involved with downed power lines. >> a lot happening with the super bowl tonight. it's not all just smiles and
parties. protesters surrounded the super bowl city standing up for tent city. jean, what was the message? >> reporter: protesters say the city of san francisco has to do more to help homeless people. the police did not allow the homeless people to set up a tent city in super bowl city but that did not stop them from making their point. dozens of protesters carrying tents march around super bowl city, snarling traffic to bring attention to what they call the inhumane treatment of the homeless. with scores of police in riot gear standing watch, the group planned to set up a tent city near the ferry building before the evening commute. >> you have one minute to disassemble those tents and put them away. >> reporter: the police called it an illegal encampment.
>> i certainly don't claim to have the solution to it but i do think we need to put more resources towards it. >> reporter: dupont says she's frustrated. city officials moved the homeless along to build super bowl city, sometimes confiscate their tents and put them to shelters. tony says he avoids shelters. >> they want me there at 6:00 in the evening and i'd miss this. >> reporter: the mayor's office says san francisco spends more than -- they've increased the number of bed because of el nino and it's about to open a new homeless shelter for 180 people. >> i find them doing very good job. yes, there is work but there always is. >> reporter: some commuters watching the protest say helping the homeless is a team effort. >> i know there are a lot of
services out there for the homeless people. i think it more responsibility to the citizens of the city to make sure they step in and help out the folks as well. >> that shelter at pier 80 is expected to open tomorrow. that manse outreach workers will be out talking to people living on the streets trying to convince them to move inside. reporting live in san francisco, jean elle. >> no credible threat to the super bowl. that's the word to the fbi and homeland security today. they're not letting their guard down. homeland security secretary reviewed the area today. >> we have on-site intelligence support, assistance to security at the stadium. >> security is also tight in san francisco as you probably noticed. police with high powered rifles are stationed across the nfl

similar crime was committed. >> university officials are reaching out to anyone who may have come in contact with these patients. >> we don't know whether there will be additional cases or not. but our job is to catch them as soon as we can to ensure they get rapid treatment if needed. >> the university is hosting a super bowl event over the weekend. doctors say meningitis can be spread by sharing a drink or cigarette or even talking closely. the health department is asking any students who experience flu-like symptoms to see a doctor immediately. >> i'm chief meteorologist jeff
