very powerful protest. a very public platform for a very powerful protest. san francisco homeless residents hold up tents and jam up super bowl city during rush hour traffic forcing city leaders to respond. plus ganging up on a defenseless woman outside a popular east bay mall. not only the car robbery and break in that has two men responsible facing serious charges this morning. perfect timing for a demolition, right? with super bowl activity swirling in san francisco abuzz with people, there's another show taking place on the embarcadero, but this one has nothing to do with football. "today in the bay" starts right now. and a good thursday morning, thank you for joining us, i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon.
let's see how the weather is holding up and little bit warmer today. >> little bit. but it's still chilly out there as you head out as you start out this day, we will need some jackets and then later on today it will be nice, warming temperatures and a lot of sunshine. as we get a look outside right now, it's 48 degrees in the north bay. san francisco, the east bay as well as the south bay and highs today up to 64 degrees in the south bay. it it will feel very nice. 58 degrees in san francisco and the north bay up to 62. we'll take a look ahead to the weekend and super bowl. that's coming up in a few minutes. but how are the roads moving now, mike? >> kari, very well right now. we'll talk more about this in just a couple of seconds and the traffic flow looks great right now and twinkling lights in the city side. look at your map and we don't have anything but green moving here. we'll watch the city traffic as more folks come in for the weekend activities. a big weekend around the bay and super bowl down in santa clara
and right now the south bay without any issues. back to you. >> all right, thank you very much, mike. let's take a live peek ooutside. look at the bay bridge. crews will soon do demolition work on the old eastern span. trusses are scheduled to be lowered at a rate of 25 feet per hour. the work expected to start in less than 90 minutes and take at least a day to complete. bob redell tracking the demolition work and join us for an update in oour next half hour. san francisco super bowl city in the spotlight this morning and so is its homeless problem. dozens of protesters surrounded the area around the embarcadero carrying tents and calling for improvements on the poor treatment quote/unquote of the homeless population in the city. they're upset they had to be moved and push under to shelters and super bowl city could be built. police in riot gear told protesters they were not allowed to set up a tent city but did not stop them from raising awareness.
>> i certainly don't claim to have the solution to it, but i do think that we need to put more resources towards it it. >> i think it's more responsible for the citizens of the city to make sure that they step in and help out the folks, as well. >> and the mayor's office says san francisco spends more than $240 million a year just on homeless services. a new navigation center is expected to open up at pier 80 for about 150 people later today. 4:33. an elderly woman attacked while shopping. two men are behind bars. they're accused of pushing down an 87-year-old woman, taking her car and later burglarizing her home. it all began about 1:30 yesterday when the 87-year-old wonl was shopping at the west gate mall in san leandro. when she left her car, that's when the two men approached her. she recalled all the horrific details of that attack. >> a young man, he pushed me
down and grabbed my keys and took off with the car. >> police believe the car jackers got her address from the registration in her car. a neighbor reported a burglary in progress was able to write them a license plate of the get away car. that helped police track down the suspects a few blocks away from the police department. the two men being arrested are not being identified yet but are on probation and face gang enhancement charges. another attack this time in the north bay. a man accused of attacking two people in as many days is now behind bars. william king beat and robbed a woman yesterday afternoon at the town center in fairfield. that woman now in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. there's king. also accused of committing a similar crime in vallejo the day before. police eventually tracked him
down yesterday and arrested him. a house went up in flames in san jose last night and that fire quickly growing to three alarms and firefighters caught the fast-moving flames. crews were forced to stay back 100 feet because the second floor was at risk of caving in. sparked shortly after 8:00 in wello glen neighborhood at a hominid construction. the burning embers jumped to a rooftop four houses down. firefighter quickly put that out but the situation was still extremely dangerous. pg&e also got involved because of the potential for downed power lines. crews were able to douse the flames by about 10:00 last night and still no word on a cause. at 4:35 and new this morning police are connecting an explosion at a vallejo mobile home park. that explosion happened last night between highway 29 and highway 37. officers say one man suffered burns tahis hands and to his face. investigators now believe he was making hash oil in a shed that
was not properly ventilated and blew the shed to pieces. that fire damaged three neighboring homes, as well. it's 4:35. want to get a check for friday eve today. >> got to love that title. anything with friday in it means we are feeling good, kari. >> yes, we are almost to the weekend. and it's cool to start off the day, but yesterday at this time, we had some 30s on the map. so, we're making some improvements here and also this afternoon it will feel warmer. we got up to 60 degrees yesterday in the south bay. today it's up to 64. 60 in palo alto and the mission district today. 57 degrees. and still cool in some spots and we're headed in the right direction and we will continue to see some warmer air moving into the bay area. i'll have a look at all of that and even into next week, that's coming up. but let's see what's happening on the roadways now with mike. >> kari, look over the water and this time the san mateo bridge is steady. there you go for 92. we'll look at the map. that is about the mid-point and

thursday morning. super bowl inching closer. the city is in the spotlight right now. spotlight are usually hot or lukewarm. >> we'll describe that spotlight as the sunshine today because it will be beautiful out there. not only this afternoon, but the next few days as our temperatures gradually warm up. as we start out the day, now it'silatal bit warmer, but it's still pretty chilly as you step out. long sleeves and a light jacket needed. as the seven-day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen, you'll see how warm the temperatures will be over the next several days but another thing you may notice that the rain has dried up, at least for now. so, here we are. 45 degrees in the east bay. 48 degrees in san francisco and the north bay. as we get a closer look at the north bay, now petaluma 49 degrees. and also 45 degrees now in napa. we're going to take it hour by hour in san jose. and at 5:00, we're at 47 degrees.
the sun rise will be nice, 45 degrees and then temperatures making it into the mid-50s as you get ready to head out for lunch. 60 degrees by 1:00 and we're not done there. we'll get into the lower 60s by this afternoon. we're still watching those waves along the shore and a high surf advisory will be in effect until tomorrow and some of the waves reaching at times up to about 15 feet. our winds have been fairly weak, but at times, once again, the winds picking up to about 20 miles per hour creating some higher waves. and high pressure will be building. keeping those weather systems well to the north. and by the beginning of next week, our highs will be topping out in the upper 60s in san francisco. and 70s for the inland areas. here's a look at that weekend forecast. tomorrow, we'll see a high of 61 degrees in san francisco. and then we're up to 67 degrees on sunday. super bowl sunday in the south bay, 74 deit grgrees.
how is it looking on the roads, mike? >> not as good as the super bowl forecast. looking really well. really good for drivers in the north bay with a light volume of traffic. we'll look at your map and we're talking about what has been all week a lighter drive across that bay bridge. yesterday the metering lights turned off at 9:00. folks are either taking mass transit or telecommuting and that's great deal for the folks who are coming into town and we're seeing the crowds build towards the weekend when the activity will be in the south bay on sunday but an easy drive between the two on either side of the bay. palo alto shows an easy flow of traffic and there's northbound and southbound and the embarcadero exit. back to you. >> thank you, mike. talking about the road, another recall for honda this morning. this time more than 2 million vehicles are being yanked off the market in the united states. >> for more on that and the rest of our news before the bell, let's turn to landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> hi, sam and laura. good morning to you both.
stock futures pointing to a lower open after the dow and s&p faced another major comeback in yesterday's suggestiession. but a rally in ooil helped to finish in the green. markets today watching earnings from conoco philips and the weekly jobless claims at 8:30 a.m. eastern. on thursday the dow climbing 183 points and the nasdaq down 12 to 4504. shares of go pro fell in after hours trading after the company reported earnings, revenues and guidance that missed analyst expectations. stock down more than 40% this year as the company struggled with the launch of its newest camera which has already seen two price cuts since its release last july. meanwhile, the impact of faulty tacata airbag s announc brings the total to more than .5 million vehicles in the u.s.
recalled as a result of the takata airbags that can be deadly. from the san francisco 49ers directed at the girl scouts. the team is apologizing on delivering a sweet treat. the girls signed to host a sleepover at levi stadium. they had to sell 50 cases of cookies over the next month. but this week the team canceled saying they booked a concert for the night of the sleepover. they double booked. n more than 1,200 girls were expected to attend the event in may. >> they were going to run through the tunnel and burst through a banner celebrating their accomplishment and girls were excited. >> after some public pressure and some adorable faces, the 49ers back pedaled. the girl scouts can have the stadium for another night that's not conflicting with a concert. the niners will also cover the cost of the event, which is
roughly $70,000. >> that's the way the cookie crumbles. new crosswalk in morgan hill getting a colorful response to its new colorful design. city unveiled this installation earlier this week with leaders that say it it hopefully will direct visitors to major downtown attractions. this is at the intersection of monterey road and dunn avenue near highway 101 and morgan hill community park. the city says the artistic walkway was funded by an initiative by the nfl. >> i think it's beautiful. it's gorgeous. better than the line. >> takes it it from nothing to something. you know. it may not have been exactly what i would have painted, but it makes it it look better. >> the new addition also raised some safety concerns, but city leaders say the place made of a material that will not get slippery in the rain.
now to decision 2016. the focus this morning is on the democrats' final faceoff before a critical primary on tuesday. tonight msnbc debate is hillary clinton's last chance to take on bernie sanders face-to-face before folks in new hampshire cast their vote. clinton actually appears to be the underdog in that state as sanders has now hoisted a double-digit lead in the polls. in a town hall last night, sanders focused his attacks on clinton's six-figure speeches but the former first lady remains confident. >> if it's about our records, hey, i'm going to win by a landslide on tuesday. >> i do not know any progressive who has a super pack and takes $15 million from wall street. that's just not professional. >> meantime, on the republican side, donald trump and marco rubio going after ted cruz on the heels of his iowa caucus win. the democratic deit bait starts tonight at 6:00.
