another driver and opened fire, causing a crash. we have the latest on the investigation and a troubling trend. >> reporter: aspoke with the chp tonight, and they say like their other cases it appears the driver was targeted. this was not a random shooting. they say they have increased their patrols to increase visibility in the area. but in the shooting overnight, they arrived within two minutes, but as you can imagine, people around here are feeling uneasy. the suv went off a steep embankment near the hilltop exit. around 1:00, someone opened fire on the suv. it veered off and flipped several time the and crashed. the driver, an and about 40 was ejected and died at the scene. >> shots can ring out at any time, and that's scare e. >> reporter: vernon lives and works nearby. he was late to work, stuck in traffic as the lane was shut
down. chp say the the driver was targeted. does that make a difference to you? >> yes, it does. it's not some person shooting random people. that makes a significant difference. >> yeah, it's kind of scary. >> reporter: james jackson lives in an apartment near the freeway and says he will be more caution driving. this is the seventh freeway shooting since november. >> i'll keep an eye out, you know, thins that might look suspicious to me, where i can avoid them early. >> reporter: at least some investigators think there's possible ties to gang activity. sometimes the victims leave before police arrive. this is mayor of san pablo. >> there seems to be an epidemic right now, of people thinking maybe they can pack their guns in their cars and whenever they're unhappy with somebody. >> i keep my eyes, my neck on a swivel. and i, you know, you have to be
careful. >> reporter: and tonight, the coroner has not yet released the victim's name. no information on the suspect vehicle, and the chp says the key is to get the public's help. report live in richmond, christie smith. more details now. as christie mentioned, there have now been seven shootings since november. the shootings happened on the freeway between berkley and tun noll. two of those shootings have been deadly. all of those shootings shut down the interstate for hours. they believe some may have been gang-related and the victims were in fact targeted. and a major announcement from california democrats. they have decided to endorse kamala harris for the open seat.
this comes after vice president joe biden fired up democrats. >> it was made just about an hour and a half ago. the party voted to endorse kamala harris for the senate seat barbara boxer will soon be leaving. both harris and boxer spoke at the convention in san jose. >> reporter: before a packed room of cheering democrats, vice president joke delivered the keynote address in san jose. he highlighted the successes of democrats in everything from the environment to the economy. >> since 2009, solar jobs have grown more than 88%. 174,000. that's more jobs than apple, googed and twitter combined. >> reporter: biden reiterated what the democratic party stands for. >> middle class means you can send your kid to a park in the neighborhood and they'll come home safely. middle class means you can send your kid to high school and they
can go to college and get them there. and in the meantime, you can take care of your mother and father and hope they never have to take care of you. >> reporter: for a brief moment, a heckler interrupted the speech, but he was quickly escorted out. kamala harris also highlighted the importance of keeping a democrat in the white house. >> the future of the united states supreme court hanging in the balance. indeed, the stakes are very high. >> reporter: tonight state democrats nominated harris for the u.s. senate seat barbara boxer will soon vacate. and while she didn't endorse either candidate, barbara boxer got the crowd going when she took a few jabs at donald trump. >> if everyone trump has insulted goes to the polls and votes democratic, we win in a landslide. >> reporter: democratic heavy hitters ramping up the party in california, emphasizing the
importance of uniting for a presidential win. the convention continues tomorrow in san jose. and after today's address, joe biden flew los angeles for a much different mission. tomorrow he'll introduce lady gaga for her performance at the dolby theater and then attend the academy awards. marianne favro, nbc bay area news. while in the bay area, vice president biden focussed on an issue very close to him, eliminating cancer. he toured the research facility at uc san francisco and held a round table discussion there along with his wife dr. of jill biden. they are spearheading an initiative to find a cure for the disease. biden's son beau died of brain cancer last year. one of the key priorities of the initiative is to identify any regulatory barriers or red tape that are slowing down the research for a cancer cure. and it is hillary clinton by a landslide in south carolina.
clinton says today's primary sets her up strong for super tuesday. >> we are going to compete for every vote in every state. we are not taking anything, and we're not taking anyone for granted. >> out of all 12 states voting often tuesday, democratic rival, bernie sanders leads clinton only in his home state of vermont. among republican candidates, ted cruz is taking on donald trump on the subject of income taxes. >> but his defense for not releasing his tax returns, he says, well, gosh, i'm being audited. okay. that's the reason to release your tax returns. >> now in the same speech, cruz suggested that trump's tax returns will reveal the billionaire is not as wealthy as he claims. new at 11:00, the warrior, steph curry with a beautiful finish to pull out a win over the oklahoma city thunder.

danville police launched an all-out search for an 8-year-old boy. and a search was launched for this 5-year-old girl. she was found with a family member, safe and unharmed. good news there. in the north bay, the search for two women had stole thousands of dollars of beauty products from a petaluma store. this is the accomplice. both women stole about $3500 worth of beauty items. if you reb need the women, petaluma police would like to hear from you. building inspectors had to check out an apartment complex after a car crashed into it. the fire department tweeted these out. this happened about 2:30 this afternoon at a building on marshal street near chestnut. all three people had to be taken to the hospital. one was a child. they are all expected to recover. the damaged area is still roped
off. firefighters saved a palo alto home from being gutted by a fire today. it started about 5:00 this evening. nobody was home, the neighbor called for help after seeing smoke. turns out there was an electrical problem in the wall near the basement. firefighters were able to isolate the damage to that corner of the house and saved the rest of the structure. coming up, a street race turns deadly on the freeway. as we see video of the wreckage it caused. and also something one driver was willing to admit to. and nobody selling tee shirts at the park. why gift shops may have to pull these items and more off the shelves. 40s and 50s right now. patchy low clouds will likely wake you up tomorrow morning as we track the forecast into the next few days that will finally bring increasing chances of rain over the next seven days. will it impact the rest of your
new video tonight of a crash that killed three people. it also shut down a major freeway in southern california for hours. take a look here at the aftermath of this fiery mess on i-5. police say this started after midnight as a street race between two cars took place. one of the drivers lost control of their car, smashed right into a semi and crashed into a third car. the semi truck driver and both people inside the third car were killed. four others were injured. police did arrest one of the drivers. they say he admitted to racing another car. all hell broke loose. that's how a witness described the bloody fight that broke out
when five kkk supporters rallied. it broke out in an anaheim park about 3 miles from disneyland. they had permission to stage an anti-immigration rally. and the fight began when clans men started getting out of their cars. >> simultaneously, officers on scene witnessed a clansman who was on the ground of sycamore or i'm sorry, cypress and lemon who was being stomped by protesters. they took the three counter protesters into custody and that victim had minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital. >> one person critically hurt by stab wounds has been upgraded to stable and one of the persons arrested is from san francisco. many people know of yosemite's famous hotel. now the trademark battle is
moving into the gift shop. the name was forced to be changed to the majestic yosemite hotel. several other sites, such as camp curry are also getting new names. this is because the park's old vendor claims it now owns the park's name. the san francisco chronicle is reporting the company is barring the new vendor from selling coffee cups or tee shirts or anything with that name, claiming it is a trade mimark violation. aaron pendergrass plunged into the oelgs after a mother and two children were swept off the beach into the water. one of the children reached shore without any help. but pendergrass, the mother and another daughter were caught in large surf with nothing but pendergrass's rescue buoy.
he was the last to be lifted from the water and had to be treated for high poe therm yeah. the family is do be fine. space x is now ready to try another launch. this is video from the last launch. they are hoping to send a satellite out to space. that's where it ended badly. right there. the launch was originally scheduled for wednesday in cape canaveral, florida, but it was called off because of fuel concerns. them on thursday, a second launch called off with 1:40 to go. no reason was given. tomorrow's launch is scheduled for 6:46 eastern time. it hung in there and then -- >> then it was gone. let's check with rob mayeda, who's going to talk about a change in the weather. >> as the seven day forecast
shows, increasing chances of finally sieeing rain. patchy fog setting up, maybe into parts of the south bay, with temperatures mostly in the low to mid-40s as we start the day. and high clouds at times as we move through the afternoon. unlike today, we're going to get more clouds to wrap up the weekend. the outer system will bring rain to our north, and high and mid-level clouds as we wrap up the weekend in the 60s. then you see the cloud the spilling on in from the north through the afternoon and evening, and for areas north of santa rosa, maybe on the coastal hilltops, maybe a few light showers. but the system will bring much better chances of accumulating rainfall and sierra snow. tomorrow highs mostly in the 60s. mostly cloudy skies from the south bay to san francisco. north bay, mid-60s and upper 60s, close to 71 around pleasanton, and the temperatures
should warm a couple degrees as we get into monday. from the north bay, san francisco, also close to 70 degrees. for the north bay, slight chance of a few showers on tuesday. elsewhere, from the east bay, tri valley into the south bay, you'll have temperatures in the low 70s through the middle part of the week. but when things will finally begin to change is getting this blocking ridge of high pressure which is sending all the rain and snow we've needed to the cascades. it's been redirecting storms for the past few weeks. it's going to weaken enough so by thursday, we do think we'll see a chance of a few showers. temperatures cooling down, and a chance of showers for the second half of the week, and saturday and sunday things start to get a little more interesting. temperatures in the low 70s. 60s for the second half of the weak, and the best chance of rain through the workweek will be right there on thursday. watch what happens as we head into the weekend. jet stream drop noose central and southern california. that is something we really haven't seen since january.
