good evening. everyone. i'm katie marzullo. oakland's police chief is calling the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy senseless. officers say devon ellis was walking with friends on brook dale avenue when he was shot and killed just before 8:00 last night. no one else was hurt. ellis was a freshman at oakland technical high school, and now police and crime stoppers are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arechtd in the case. >> our investigators have been here since last evening. they worked through the night and continue to work through the day. we also have patrol officers. we are following up leads, we are looking at video surveillance footage to see if
anything was captured on surveillance. we want to find out what led up to this shooting. >> officers do not have a motive for the shooting and no suspects have been identified. police are also investigating a shooting in livermoor that left two people dead. officers say around 4:30 this afternoon they found two men on the ground with gun shot wounds after responding to a disturbance call at alta mont creek and winding stream drive. one man was dead at the scene. the other died at the hospital. both men are believed to be in their 20s. osteoso far there is no information on a suspect. >> new details in a pit bull attack that left a 40-year-old woman in the hospital with very serious injuries. officials say the attack was reportsed on silverado drive around 10:00 this morning. the 40-year-old victim had injuries to her face, arms and legs, and was taken to the trauma center. police say she was attacked inside her home by the family dog, a male pit bull. a man who also lives in the house was not hurt.
in hayward a 12-hour standoff came to a dramatic ends with the arrest of a suspect daus accused of shooting at an officer. around 2:00 this afternoon, the swat team moved in as what appeared to be gas poured from the windows. minutes laider the man was taken out during handcuffs. the officers say the man shot at an officer during a traffic stop. the officer was not hurt. police say the suspect was driving a car that could be connecting with a shooting last night. a new twist in the murder of a woman in sonoma county. investigators believe they found three people responsible for the death of 84-year-old olga 6:denali found dead inside her penn grove home on tuesday. officers say two men led police on a chase, crossed the line at arizona while firing at other
drivers. spike stripsland stopped the vehicle and a man and a woman fled out into the desert. when the woman pulled out a gun, officers pulled out aon gun and fired at her. the man was arrested shortly after. the motive of the murder is unknown. the family of the woman charge with the murder of her baby are standing behind her. the baby's father tells our sister station in sac sacramento green had been running from something the night the baby died. the this morning, her parents released a statement saying her daughter has quote never been in trouble with this the law. we know had our heart that sammy would never do anything to intentionally harm her newborn son. a family is coping with the tragic loss of their teenage daughter one year after she was hit and killed by a train. tonight they are channelling that grief in a way to help others. cornell barnard has more from
martinez where many are remembering jenna betty. >> a lot of kids never go on the train tracks anymore. >> reporter: friends say the untimely death of jenna has brought greater awareness about the dangers of trains. bup that's the beginning. seems the 14-year-old girl with the big smile had a way of bringing out the best in everyone. >> you could text jenna and tell her your problem and she would make you laugh and cheer you up. >> the popular 8th grader was struck and killed one year ago by a freight train. police say she ran back to pick up the cell phone she had dropped on the tracks. >> honestly, i feel like she walks with us every day. >> jenna's mom dina has managed to channel her grief into something positive, starting with the hashtag her smile. >> the idea of starting a nonprofit was born. and i knew i wanted to help people who were in a similar situation that our family was going through. >> her smile.org has already helped eight families with financial and emotional support. on monday, the jenna betty
memorial golf tournament will be held in hercules. they expect to raise $10,000. >> jenna should not be forgotten. we assault should remember her and not for how she died but how happy she was and who she was. >> jenna's death is still teaching many important lessons. >> things happen on a dime. i think it has brought greater awareness not only for just train safety but overall safety. >> reporter: a teen with an amazing smile now bringing hope and strength to others. corpsnell bernard, abc7 news. new details in san francisco where a major entrance to interstate 280 reopened after flooding left it closed most of the day. all southbound lanes of san jose avenue were shut down. the flooding started just before 9:00 this morning near randle street in the glen park neighborhood. some muni tracks were also under water but service was restored this afternoon as crews pumped out the water. the leak has been traced to a
water substation in the mission district. no word yet on what caused it. tomorrow the san jose city council will try to fix one of the biggest problems in the city crumbling roads. our media partner, the san jose mercury news reports the cost to fix all the potholes is half a billion dollars. the city would have to triple its current annual spending on streets just to keep them in their existing condition. council members will start looking at where to come up with the money tomorrow. minimum wage workers in oakland are getting a big raise starting tomorrow. the current $9 an hour minute wum wage will increase nearly 36% to $12.25 per hour, the highest minimum wage in the area. while workers allowed the news some businesses say the increase will cause hem to raise prices hire fewer workers or give their employers rees fewer hours. some businesses will start using
a service charge in lieu of a tip. oakland voters approved the wage increase last november. senior citizens and people with disabilities can now ride muni for free. the program kicked off today. more than 38000 people have applied for the free municipal audio program expansion in just the past month. new applications may take up to four weeks to process. the california gop made history today by officially recognizing a group of bay republicans who have been fighting for years for formal acceptance. the log cabin republicans received overwhelming support to receive a charter during this weekend's convention in sacramento. the group has been around for 38 years but some social conservatives have opposed the group's inclusion. republicans have their eyes on the seat being vacated by long time senator and democrat barbara boxer at this weekend's state gop convention assembly man rocky chavez announced he plans to run for the seat on thursday.

people in san ramon gave out a dose of awareness this morning. that is the name of the new 5k walk that's organized by mothers who lost sons to prescription drug abuse. hundreds of people came together as iron horse middle school to share their stories of loss. their main message lock up your medication so it stays out of the hands of children and drug seekers. >> that is the one thingel thing that we can individually do that can really make a difference. you have no idea who is taking your medication if it's not secured. >> abc7 news anchor cheryl jennings emseed the event. march is prescription drug awareness month in california. prom season is almost upon us.
for the 12th straight year in a row a san francisco nonprofit is giving away dresses to bay area teens. the princess project's annual giveaway kicked off today. since 2002, the nonprofit has supplied more than 20000 dresses and accessories to bay area girls in need. organizers say many girls return after high school as volunteers. >> they have come to get a dress and they come volunteer with us after high school, you know, to help set up, just to kinds of pay back for what they received from us before. >> today was the first of four giveaways in san francisco. interested girls must book an appointment on line and bring a valid high school id to get a dress. the march 7th event is already full. but appointments are still available on march 15th and 21st. you can fine more information on our website, abc7 news.com. coming up next on abc7 news at 9:00 hit by hail. california's wild weather moves to the southern part of the state. and a dubious weather record
