hillary clinton going toe-to-toe in their first ever debate being described as caustic, nasty, even ugly. >> putting clinton on the defensive again was sanders' renewed attack on her her ties to wall street. it is time for "your voice, your vote." abc's bazi kanani following the developments from washington. bazi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis. good morning, reena. again, this was the first democratic debate with just two candidates on the stage and with just days to go until the next round of voting, they did not hold back. the top two democrats face-to-face for the last time before the new hampshire primary. >> i think it's time to end the very artful smear that you and your campaign have been carrying out. >> reporter: the candidates clashing over charges of not standing up to wall street. >> i helped lead the effort against deregulation. >> reporter: while hillary clinton dodged a question about releasing the transcripts of her paid speeches to banks and big corporations. >> i will look into it. i don't know the status.

because it was so packed. abc's tom llamas was there. >> so right now we're outside the trump event. we can't get in because there's so many in there. and the fire marshal won't let anybody get in. there's donald trump. his motorcade coming in right now. >> trump's message only an problems. >> no politician is going to solve it. no politician. these people, i would like to use really foul language. i won't do it. i was going to say they're full of [ bleep ] but i won't say that. no, it's true. >> and trump still taking aim at ted cruz accusing the cruz campaign of spreading misleading information suggesting that ben carson was dropping out of the race after the iowa caucuses. abc news obtained the voice mail left by cruz's campaign on caucus night. >> hello, this is the cruz campaign with breaking news. dr. ben carson will be planning to suspend his campaign following the caucus. please inform any carson caucusgoers of this news and urge them to support cruz instead. >> cruz denies any wrongdoing.

coast at this hour, but it'll be quick, expected to be history by as soon as this afternoon. well, as concerns grow over the zika virus here at home, health officials in brazil say at least two cases were contracted through blood transfusions. with 12 of the 50 plus u.s. cases in florida, the governor there expanded the state of emergency to a fifth county and asking the cdc for a thousand kits to test for zika antibodies in pregnant women who may be at risk. ranking michigan officials knew about a spike in legionnaires' disease in flint much sooner. the disease may have been linked to the contamination of the city's water supply. the governor said last month he had just learned of the connection, but e-mails obtained by the associated press show state agencies and high ranking members of his administration knew about it ten months earlier. a mass exodus is under way in syria as u.s. backed rebels lose their hold of a key province.

expected to be okay. well, enjoy the low gasoline prices while you can. president obama is proposing a $10 a barrel tax on oil. that's likely to raise gas prices about 25 cents a gallon. white house aides say the oil fee would fund environmentally friendly transportation projects such as mass transit. but it's unlikely to get a green light from congress. well, there's another huge air bag recall. these involve the controllers for air bags in about 5 million vehicles worldwide. the air bags made by a german company can deploy without reason or fail to inflate at all. the recall involves older vehicles made by honda, fiat, chrysler, mercedes, mazda, volkswagen and volvo. it's not related to the much larger takata air bag recall. sad to say the deadline has passed and california lottery officials say no one has submitted the winning ticket for the $63 million jackpot. it was sold last august at a
yesterday afternoon to claim that prize, and that didn't happen. at least one person is suing claiming he submitted the winner but he was refused the prize. now, the lottery says some claims have to be investigated. when we come back, fall from grace. former heisman winner johnny manziel accused of hitting his girlfriend. the 911 call just released.

>> does she need an ambulance? >> manziel tells tmz he did not strike crowley. police in both ft. worth and dallas have not charged him with a crime. the nfl, however, is investigating the incident. a couple of passings to note starting with the founder of of the band earth, wind and fire, maurice white. i remember how the stars ruled the night away >> there you see white singing his band's classic hit "september." he suffered from parkinson's disease. maurice white died at his los angeles home wednesday. he was 74 years old. and veteran bmx biker and x games star dave mirra has died. mira was one of the most decorated x games athletes ever winning medals over a 15-year span. his stunts on a bike were legendary. police in north carolina say he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. dave mirra leaves behind his wife and two young daughters.
