legislative session smith announced she had a brain tumor. she was was first elected to the state assembly in 2000 and won a seat in the senate in 2012. governor brian sandoval released this statement... "senator debbie smith was an extraordinary public servant whose record of accomplishments and presence in the nevada legislature will remain unmatched in the years ahead." "today we remember her legacy as a true nevadan with a fierce constituents and state, particularly to public children of nevada." sandoval has ordered all flags to half-staff. the price of gas is still dropping, according to lundberg... the nationwide average price for a gallon of gasoline is now $1.77 per gallon. that's down 56 cents from a year ago. here in northern nevada the average price for a

$2.21... down five cents from last week. diesel will run you about $2.23 per gallon... that's down three cents from last week. lundberg says it's less likely that gas prices will continue to slide because crude oil prices are almost unchanged from a month ago. don't forget... you can always find the best gas prices in your neighborhood by going to kolo tv dot com. his 12-year-old son used his gun to commit suicide - now a las vegas man is facing charges. 31-year-old olin manuel was arrested last week on one count of child abuse with substantial bodily harm, resulting in death. on februray 13th, police found manuel's son with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. investigators say manuel had purchased the gun...but he has a criminal background that includes felony convictions - and isn't allowed to own guns. the sparks fire department is

caused a fire at a local business. the fire started a little after 8-30 this morning at the "egg roll king" on oddie. the restaurant was closed at the time, so firefighters had to force their way inside. firefighters say the fire was in the kitchen cooking hood. the fire was put out quickly and no other businesses were damaged. the egg roll king will be closed until repairs can be made. police have released the name of a man killed in the area of robb drive and mae anne last night. reno police say 31 year old shilo auble was killed shortly before 7 last night. investigators say it started when two cars were racing... one suddenly stopped in the road. the driver - auble got out of his car and started running after the other car. police say that's when he was hit by a third - unrelated vehicle the driver of the car involved in the initial incident took off before police arrived. that car is described as a small, dark colored

the driver who hit auble is cooperating, and alcohol or other drugs do not appear to be a factor. ## we also have an update to the search for a missing zephyr cove woman. carolyn batchelor has not been seen since february 15. her s-u-v was found in the area of "inspiration point" overlooking emerald bay. search and rescue crews from eldorado county and douglas county are now searching the area. but the recent snow and steep terrain is causing problems for resuce workers. did you celebrate darwin day? reno once again hosting a celebration of the father of evolutionary theory -we'll show you how. and coming up later in sports -- the closest

high pressure will strengthen over the sierra and western bringing dry conditions above average temperatures through monday will ease down to near average for the lower valleys tuesday, then jump to 8 to 14 degrees above average on wednesday. the next chance for precipitation will be next weekend. && .short term... any changes to the inherited short term forecast were minimal at best. most of the area will remain dry for the next three days...but a weak wave

northern forecast area...near the oregon border...late tonight. moisture and lift is limited with this feature...but there could be just enough to produce light pcpn north of gerlach and eagleville later this evening and overnight. behind the wave northwest flow develops at the surface and aloft as a ridge builds just off the west coast monday. this should result in slightly cooler valleys temperatures monday and tuesday...but still near to above average. ridges begin to warm by tuesday...but with light low level winds and limited mixing valley inversions are likely to develop. tuesday may be

last night causing a minor accident in the glenbrook area of lake tahoe. the boulder is estimated to be nine feet wide by six feet high. n-dot plans on breaking the boulder apart tomorrow. until the boulder is removed, one lane of westbound u-s 50 will remain closed. the international darwin day celebration is held in cities around the world every february. in northern nevada, the discovery museum in downtown reno hosted this year's celebration of science and reason. kolo 8 news nows chris buckley has more. these birds of prey - to many scientists, prime examples of evolution - on display at the discovery musem... as part of international darwin day. reno freethinkers organzed this local celebration. "the reno freethinkers are basically a group that strives to bring out to the public education

separation of church and state in the forefront." the day pays tribute to the life and work or charles darwin, best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. "darwin had an impossible task in front of him how did he explain the mad diverse range of life on earth and through the scientific method he was able to do that. what he teaches us is don't throw up your hands." organizers chose the discovery museum in hopes of reaching more young people. "we need more scientific literacy in this county it's so important to be scientifically literate because when we're talking about climate change, stem cell research, we need educated scientists on the forefront of policy. its these children that are going to be doing this in ten to twenty years." this celebration... gets bigger every year. in downtown reno chris

now. this is reno's 6th darwin day celebration. the sky tavern junior ski and snowboard program is having a big year... and they're looking to expand their facilities. they're hoping to install a new 2-thousand square foot dome for the "sky kids" program - that's the program for three-to-six years olds. more than 170 sky kids are participating in the program this year - the most kids they've seen in several years - and their current space is too small. the dome has already been donated... but sky tavern is hoping to raise 25-thousand dollars to install it, including foundation and electrical work. "we hope to have it done by the summer, have another great season next year and get more kids in. every year we get bigger and every year we're changing things around, making it better for the kids, for the parents, for everyone that comes up, and to have a great

time since joining the mountain west, a wolf pack team has won a conference champioonship the nevada swimming and diving team welcomed home today at reno- tahoe airport... fresh off their victory at the mountain west championships in texas... the pack overcame a 39 and a half point deficit with just 3 events remaining to rally past boise state for the title... douglas grad krysta palmer was named mountain west diver of the year for the second straight season, and jian jin li you was named diving coach of the year for the 4th straight season... congratulations to the entire team well not such a fun night for the wolf pack basketball team -- looked like they had u- n-l-v beat when marqueze coleman hit that go-ahead 3 with just 2.4 seconds
