driver was going east here on cheyenne. when he began to lose control! he crossed multiple lanes of traffic! opposite lanes of traffic! before hitting this pole! let's take it to chopper 13 first on scene! from above -- you can see just how many cars were around! this happened at six. rush hour! the woman passenger -- unclear if she was the wife of the driver -- but she told police he turned to her said something was wrong! you can imagine how terrifying this must have been for her. but she was able to safely steer the car ... as to avoid other cars! and also pedestrians! there is a library and a park nearby. lots of foot traffic! the man was taken to umc trauma...where he died. back out here live -- as you can see. the road is back open. police closed it for several hours while they investigated. we're told that woman passenger was not injured either. reporting live, mahsa saeidi, channel 13. action news.
following closely tonight. metro is apologizing for a breakdown that affected 911 and 311 calls for several hours. the community's lifeline literally went dead for 30 to 50 minutes yesterday while metro worked to reroute emergency calls to henderson and north las vegas. in all.. it took about 6 hours to get metro's 911 system back up. technicians have been working around the clock to diagnose the problem.. but they still don't have any answers.. and metro doesn't know how many calls were lost while the system was down. 20:16:06 asst. sheriff tom roberts: we realize 911 system is a lifeline for our community. and when someone calls, there's an expectation that someone will be on the other end to answer that call for help. yesterday's unfortunate event is not representative of the kind of service that we want to provide. and it's definitely not what the public deserves. the failure comes only 2-months after a multi-million dollar upgrade to the system.. and it's not the first time the new system has fallen short of
