>> we got to the hospital. and dr. coleman introduced himself. i sat down and looked at the father and i said, you know, i have been through your pain right now. i can't pronounce him. he's cold. >> he said do i have your permission to do a potassium check. it seemed normal and there was a flicker of hope. do i have your permission to flight him to lehigh valley hospital. >> his body was frozen like a block of ice, but there was a romote chance justin could be revived. he sent there hoping for a miracle. >> their idea was to put justin on ecmo. >> as i walked out the door, they were working on justin.

[ applause ] >> john i want to start with you, what goes through a man's mind when he pulls up on the side of the road, frozen conditions and sees his sons body with a blanket over it. >> it was like, huh, i couldn't believe it. i just held him and sobbed. it was, it was the worst day of my life! >> it felt to me like, if you hadn't been blessed to show up there, there's a good chance justin may have been taken to the morgue. >> he didn't have any id, on him. everything worked out in such a way, i can't explain it. i really can't explainit. >> dr. travis: think about the scenario, he's out there. there's snow. the fact that you were able to

is just one element of the story that's a miracle. but then i want to ask the further question. we all know in emergency medicine that, prolonged cardiac arrest, there's a chance you get a heartbeat back, but usually neurologically, the patient is devastated. when he was in a coma was there a point where you gave up hope? >> no, no. i remember saying to donny, we will take him any way. any way we can, even if he's a vegetable. we gallon visit him in a nurse -- we will go visit him in the nursing home if we have to. i never gave up hope. >> ashley, sara, his sisters, did you think, there's a chance, he may get brain function back, we may have hope to see our brother? >> every day was a wild card driving to the hospital. w didn't know if he was going

or good day. we kept holding on to the hope of the e egthat came out okay. and the neurological didn't turn out okay. we had one bad thing and one good thing. we held on to the good thing. >> the ekg, shows electrical and brain activity. there was hope there. and this story is so much about perseverence. it's about family, love, perseverence of the individual, of the doctors. i's really, though, about miracles. because miraculously, justin is here with us today. everyone, please welcome justin! >> miracles do happen, folks. >> audience: yeah! >> dr. travis: how does it feel to be a miracle? >> it's really amazing. 11 months ago i was dead. and now i am here today. and it's -- [ applause ] >> it's unbelievable! wouldn't have thought it could have happened this way. >> dr. travis: i have to confess i knew you would be here today, but i didn't want to meet you until that moment, because even i was still a little skeptical, you know, how is justin going to be? how is he going to look? how is he going to walk? we will get into the injuries you sustained. but i would never have known, if your family didn't share your story with me, i would have never known that you were year ago. >> yeah. >> that night, freezing cold. >> um, i was at a fire hall that night. it's usually the same route. two miles from my house. i go that route. 10 years ago my friend died on the same road.

and pay my respects and i didn't make it that might, you know. > dr. travis: of course i am sure you don't have recollections after that. >> i didn't make it to that, i got out of the fire hall, the next thing i remember is waking up with my family. that's the last thing i remember. >> dr. travis: to step aside from your story, this is why when it's snowing and icy, make people -- make sure people know where you are, a slip and fall and you hit your head, and you could be passed out. >> it was negative 4? >> yeah, i mean, that's -- i probably shouldn't have walked that night. but i walked that night. [ laughter ] >> dr. travis: so, after everything you have been through, and everything that's happened. e, if you learned anything, what would you share * with everyone, having been through everything you went through.
