the senate floor. what he's doing to try and help frustrated solar customers. this is fox5 news at 11. local las vegas. a battle for the latino vote, as the sanders and clinton campaigns turn their attention towards nevada. i'm christine maddela i'm john huck. while sanders and clinton sparred at a town hall in new hampshire tonight, their young las vegas supporters fought it out on social media. fox 5's miguel martinez-valle has those details. the twitter drama started like this... local activist astrid silva was at an event with dreamers supporting hillary clinton, pictures of her support made it online, and bernie sander's latino press secretary tweeted saying at the sanders campaign doesnt just show case dreamers, they orginize with them... she was calling the whole event a press bit, and bernie sanders himself retweeted it... this got a few

defenders on both sides, and hillary clinton even jumped online to tweet her support for astrid saying its not for the press, shes part of her team;.. " people said that they tried to dampen our endoresement today, and i definitely said i came here i crossed a river because there was no other method available to my family, and a little water's not gonna harm us." activist astrid silva took some heat on twitter after announcing her support for hillary clinton the most visible critizism came from sander's latino press secretary erika andiola... " i knew that there would be people that disagreed with it, unfortunately some people disagreed a lot more, but again thats peoples opinnion and its great people are expressing themselves." andiola, a fellow dreamer, called

support event a press hit, saying sanders and his team are organizing with dreamers not just showcasing them... clinton herself jumped online to defend silva, calling her part of the team... the twitter spat is part of a much larger battle, as the nevada caucus inches closer and closer, sander's campaign is busy making calls trying to take the support experts say hillary holds in the silver state... "bernie's opportunity in the next two weeks is going to be to try to motivate hispanics and the younger millenials to get out and participate because they like his message." they say sander's biggest challenge will be to get his millenial support group out to the caucus, but his nevada campaign leaders say iowa was a clear example that those feeling the bern shouldnt be underestimated " of the people who showed up to caucus in iowa, it was something like 80 percent were caucusing for bernie, so it is a challenge but its also time for people to stand up and were going to show them that young people are excited and the excitement that were talking about is going to translate on caucus day." experts say the close results from the iowa caucus make the

more important for democrats when it comes to getting the latino vote, but on the republican side we can expect the marco rubio's campaign to make some moves of their own trying to attact latino voters... live, miguel martinez-valle, fox5 news local. las vegas. nevadans have just a few weeks until our state's caucus. democrats will caucus on saturday, february 20th... at 11 a-m and on tuesday, february 23rd, republicans will turn out to their caucus stations between five and seven p-m. you will receive information in the mail on where your caucus station is... and you must be registered as republican or democrat to take part. metro says a fatal crash happened tonight, because the driver suffered a medical episode. this happened just before six, at cheyenne and buffalo. metro says a man had some kind of medical episode... and his passenger had to take control of the van. they hit a pole, and the man was

hospital where he died. the female passenger was not hurt. this area was closed for hours during the investigation. a person who was shot and killed this morning, may have tried to save his life by calling police before he died. "the deceased person was acually one of the callers, so he called in to 911 also so we're going to be reviewing that. i already heard the call and he doesn't say who shot him." this shooting happened just before three, near fremont and charleston. metro says a man in his fifties was found outside suffering from gunshot wounds, and he died at the scene. police haven't arrested anyone yet, and they say this shooting isn't gang-related. the coroner will identify the victim. if you have information that can help police, call crime stoppers at 702- 385-55-55. several families are out of a home, after a two-story apartment building caught fire near major and burkholder. the henderson fire department says people who live here discovered the fire in a bedroom last night.

9-1-1, and all the people escaped safely. two pet birds were killed. the red cross is helping 16 people and their pets find a place to stay. fire officials haven't said how the fire started... but they estimate more than 500 thousand dollars worth of damage. metro's 9-1-1 system is taking emergency calls again... after crashing for nearly seven hours yesterday. now we're learning more about the system... which was a recent upgrade. metro installed a two-point-three million dollar system at the end of last year. the department says the crash happened around three-30... and for at least 30 minutes, 9-1-1 calls could not be answered. after that, calls were re-routed to henderson and north las vegas departments. there were still delayed responses... and metro is apologizing to everyone who had to wait for help. . ""yesterdays unfortunate event is not representative of kind of service that we want to provide and is definitely not what the public deserves." "

computer hack, and they're increasing their tech staff. the department is also building a back-up dispatch center that will be ready by march. last week, several 9-1-1 calls from mesquite were re-routed to las vegas, after a mobile phone service upgrade. metro says their system is back to normal now, and they weren't affected yesterday two henderson elementary scools were on lockdown today... after receiving threats. clark county school district police say "neil-c twitchell" and "john c vanderburg" elementary schools were affected. both are near green valley and paseo verde parkways. school police didn't specify what the threats were about... but say they have been happening around our county in the last month. in some cases, calls come into the schools in some cases, calls come into the schools warning about bombs or shootings. school police are working with federal authorities and local law enforcement to address the issue. a message from

that's what some are saying about the c-d-c's new warning to young women. it warns they should not drink alcohol unless they're using contraception.. fox five's elizabeth watts has more on the message. the cdc issues a warning and posts it on facebook sparking heated debate.. it says three in four women who want to get pregnant drink alcohol.. to which some wrote: heaven forbid! we spoke with a couple of local moms who say it's an important message but the approach could be revised... dawna alexander/ foster mom i think people are more intelligent than that butt to dawna alexander/ foster mom i dont know that its their place to tell people they should be on birth control rosalina sie / mother it is really dangerous because of the alcohol you dont know what happen when youre baby is born the c-d-c says three million women are at risk of exposing their developing baby to alcohol... because they're drinking, having sex and not using birth control... drinking while pregnant can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders... causing physical issues... also behavioral and intellectual disabilites that could last a lifetime..

sometimes it can take 4-8 weeks before u even know youre pregnant doctor daliah wachs says the government's message may seem odd but she sees it often.. dr. daliah wachs/ the dr daliah show the cdc likes to make guidelines they like to remind us. i can't tell you how many women i go "youre pregnant" and the first thing they go is oh my gosh i've been drinking or i got drunk on saturday or i did this. doctor daliah says there's no way of knowing how much alcohol could be safe for a growing baby... so it's best to not have any at all... she says while mom may feel fine with a drink baby could be getting alcohol intoxicated... dr. daliah wachs/ the dr daliah show the fetus metabolizes alcohol much slower. so mom may be already eliminating it in her liver. eliminating it inher kidneys. butbaby its compounding is compounding. doctor daliah advises people to always expect you can get pregnant... so practice safe sex.. use birth control and be aware. the c-d-c says up to one in twenty u-s school children may have fetal alcohol syndrome disorders. dr daliah believes it may be because

promiscuity is on the rise. dr daliah/ decades ago only certain populations of people were overly active and many women waited until they were married or they were a lot more cautious or more concerned with birth control. nowadays we have the type of environment where well if i do get pregnant i could take care of it. or im not gonna get that std its not gonna happen to me or i can just take an antibiotic. she says more people are relaxed about the sexual act... and with the drinking comes more of that. nevada senator harry reid discussed our state's solar battle on the senate floor today. he and maine senator angus king are working on a bill to help solar customers. the animal foundation hopes you'll find "the one"... right before valentine's day. there's more than 120 dogs, 36 cats, and eight rabbits available for adoption at the shelter. you're looking at some of those pets who are looking for a home. the shelter is lowering adoption fees for all dogs and cats at least six months old, to fourteen dollars. this goes for all rabbits too. the valentine's deal goes through february 15th. some talented football players are making the decision to bring their skills to

it's national signing day for high schol football players. and this year, unlv is attracting some of the best recruits we've seen... as the rebels continue to improve under coach tony sanchez' leadership. fox 5's kevin bolinger shows us why next season's team is one to get excited about. kevin: this is the best recuiting class that unlv football has seen in more than two decades. in the op three of the mountain west and top 75 in the country. the excitement is building and head coach tony sanchez says now it's time to get to work. recruting class is made up of 23 players - but it's the type of players that to the mountain west conference that the rebels are on the rise. unlv signed a record ten 3-star recrutis...and are bringing in the type of players that normally wouldn't give the rebels a sniff. head coach tony sanchez says the culture is changing. tony sanchez: the majority of our guys came from winning programs

came with the attitude of i'm a winner. you want that. it will bleed into the guys that maybe didn't come from those types of programs and it'll bleed into our guys who haven't had a lot of wins lately. so i think the more we brgin that in the more that will be the expectation. the rebels brought in players who will have an immediate impact at key areas like offensive line, defensive line and defensive backs. they also signed two top tier quarterbacks - highly regarded high school q-b armani rogers who was being pursued by pac-12 schools is someone sanchez says has a special career in front of him. and junior college transfer johnny stanton - who began his career at nebraska - will step in right now as a 6'3", 245 pound playmaker that changes the rebels offense. tony sanchez: johnny stanton is a phenomenal football player. he threw for 3400 yards and you keep hearing comparisons and people talking about his running ability but he throws first. he threw for 3400 yards but he did rush for 700 yards so he's a dual threat guy. kevin: believe it or not spring football practice is just over a month away here at rebel park. a lot of those junior
