crews are investigating a house fire on the east side this morning. no one was hurt -- but the fire happened at a home that does have a violent past. fox five's nick lagrange joins us live from the scene near charleston and lamnear charleston and lamb b with how investigators think this fire was started. nick? dave and maria -- this is the home at address 52 sherill circle. that address may sound familiar, since there was another fire here back in november of last year. the only difference is, that november fire yielded four injuries, one death, and an

injuries, one death, and an ongoing homicide investigation. this fire happened at about 10:45 wednesday night. it's a one-story home, and images las vegas fire and rescue tweeted last night show heavy flames engulfing much of the house. the fire was put out in about 20 minutes with no damage to surrounding homes, and no injuries. back in november -- crews put out a fire at this same address, where four people were injured. the body of a man was later found inside the home at that time -- investigators said all of the surviving victims appeared to have been restrained inside the home before the blaze was intentionally started. they also said it appeared the man -- whose body was found inside the house -- was the victim of a homicide. police aren't speculating as to whether or not there is a connection between that november fire and this one. but it is something they will certainly look into. a cause of this fire, has not yet been determined.

henderson police are on the hunt men wanted in connection with a brutal home invasion robbery. suspects broke into a home in sun yesterday tying up a 72- year-old woman and ransacking cash and valuables. those living in the 55 and older community say it's possible the suspects knew exactly what they were doing. whose a new york

retired. he made an interesting comment. he said often times you have a case like this it's somebody has been in there doing work and they've cased the house. they know what they want and they could care less whether the owners there or not they're just coming in." the victim suffered minor injuries, but is expected to be okay. police don't have a good description of the suspects, so if you know anything you're asked to call henderson police right away. a manhunt continues this morning after a shooting near u- n-l-v. it happened last night at the parkway villas apartments at maryland and hacienda. the victim was taken to sunrise hospital with unknown injuries. police didn't say how many times the victim was shot. call police if you know anything. in north las vegas... police are searching for the person who shot a woman last night near carey and commerce. the women was taken to u-m-c in serious condition. no word yet what provoked the shooting. camera phones were rolling when metro arrested two people for

video we got from a fox5 viewer on "report it." metro says it started with a car theft in the northwest valley. police searched a home near mountains edge and arrested one person. police then found that stolen car at blue diamond and buffalo. they arrested two more people after what they called a "high-risk traffic stop." we have a big battle brewing... between apple... and uncle sam. apple is challenging a judge's order to help the f-b-i unlock an i-phone belonging to one of the people behind last year's terror attack in san bernardino... a federal judge ordered apple to create a hack that would allow the f-b-i to try any password combination without losing the data. apple c-e-o tim cook says no... they're not going to do that... saying it would undermine decades of security advancements that protect customers... the white house countered by saying the order would "have an impact on this one device only." the f-b-i is investigating after a los angeles hospital

dollars to hackers to get its computer systems back up and running. "hollywood presbyterian medical center" handed over about 17-thousand dollars worth of internet currency, otherwise known as bitcoins. this after malware had locked access to certain systems and was preventing electronic communications. administrators decided the quickest way to get back up and running was to pay the "ransom." the system was restored monday. in international news. pope francis calls on governments worldwide to open their hearts to quote "the human tragedy that is forced migration." this right before his open air mass at the u-s border in juarez, mexico yesterday, ending his five day tour of the country. the pope urging countries to stop their calls for mass deportations, and immigration barriers calling them quote: "a form of suicide." he also spent time offering blessings to inmates at an area prison. metro is hoping survillance video will help them solve a gruesome mystery... a bag filled with

cats was dumped on the side of the road. this video was captured from a flower shop on marion near lake mead. you can see a car driving north on marion. it's hard to see, but someone leans out and dumps trash in the road. police say they aren't sure if it's the cats or not. the remains of a fifth animal were found too, but police say that animal was dropped off at a different time. police haven't said how the animals died. a judge has ordered the suspect accused of attacking a metro k-9 to appear in court today, after he refused to yesterday. "tolavius timmons" barricaded apartment last week for almost 12 hours. at one point metro sent 8- year-old "nicky" in to get timmons out. that's when timmons started attacking the k-9 officer, striking him several times with a machete. metro says during the attack, nicky didn't make a sound. "in fact he was trying to go back in there and i had him by the collar i was taking him out to get him out of the way of the swat guys and i looked down i had blood all over my hands and is that from the suspect or you and i looked down and he was bleeding all

approved patients. the company says an on-site nurse will be available to discuss dosing and best practices with patients. essence vegas is planning to open two more locations in the valley next month. wynn resorts is moving forward with plans to build the strip's newest shopping experience. the company says "wynn plaza" will open in fall 2017. it will have two entrances directly off the strip with its own valet service.... doubling the amount of retail space at the "wynn" and "encore". c-e-o steve wynn says the complex will take advantage of existing unused space. we've gone 9 full minutes without mentioning politics... that felt good... now to politics. with just 2 days till voting in nevada and south carolina... the races are getting tighter... and the rhetoric is getting nastier. it's been nearly 90 years since a u.s. president has visited cuba... now president obama is getting ready to make the historic trip. but not without

the f-d-a is proposing to redesign nutrition labels, hoping it will make shopping easier and healthier for consumers. "people just don't know how much they're actually consuming when it comes to calories in foods, and food labels don't seem to make it any easier for us. any help that we can get in terms of interpreting food labels will go a long way in terms of overall health." the f-d-a wants to completely change the way labels look. including making calorie content more prominent and changing what is considered a serving size. they also want to add a line to distinguish added sugars from natural ones. speaking of sugar... certain coffee drinks at starbucks contain more sugar than soda. researchers looked at more than 100 hot coffee drinks -- many of them from starbucks. they found that some of the flavored drinks contained up to 25 teaspoons of sugar... that's more than 3 times the sugar

been preparing the entire offseason for this one race. it's the daytona 500 and this year it should be a doozy. nats drivers were on the track getting practice in for the biggest race of the regular season. 20 year old chase elliott is the youngest pole winner at daytona and has the added pressure of drving retired legend jeff gordon's number 24. fox nascar reporter and green valley high school grad jamie little says it sets up some great story lines for fans. jamie little/fox nascar reporter: i think the personalities. somebody like chase elliott who is on the pole here. it's gonna start that momentum. people are going to be like who is this kidin the 24 car. i want to see him. between that and jeff gordon being in our booth i think a lot of pepole out in vegas want to see jeff gordon. they want to hear what he's all about and what he brings to the boradcast. chase elliott/daytona 500 pole winner: a starting spot doesn't mean much but experience does. so trying to position yourself correctly means a lot more so we have to keep that in mind.

dave and maria? a 20-year veteran of the clark county fire department is recovering in the hospital after getting really sick fighting a fire. the firefighter started feeling sick while battling a fire near rainbow and blue diamond last night. clark county fire officials say the firefighter may have suffered heat exhaustion. an armed suspect is on the run after robbing a man at random in a southwest valley parking lot. it happened early yesterday morning near cimarron and blue diamond. police say the victim was waiting for a friend in the parking lot of a strip mall when the suspect approached him with a gun. the suspect demanded money and shot the victim in the shoulder. police haven't said if they've made any arrests. call police or crimestoppers at

michigan says he's giving engineers one month to find flint's underground lead water pipes that are contaminating the city's drinking water. "this is an ongoing process. we've done a number of things, but there's much more to be done." "the ultimate goal here needs to be replacing the lead service lines." but the city's mayor wants the pipes removed right away and says training on how to remove them should begin next week. governor rick snyder doesn't want them removed, instead he wants to coat the pipes with a protective film. and despite the water not being drinkable.... a new study shows that people in flint the highest rates in the nation for that toxic water. public interest group-- food and water watch-- surveyed the 500- largest water systems in the country they say people

here are the construciton areas to look out for and alternate routes listed on our maps back to the news desk toyota is recalling nearly three million s-u- vs worldwide -- because of possible problems with the seat belts. the company says a flaw could cause some rear seat belts to fail. the affected vehicles are the 2005 through 20-15 models of the toyota rav-4, and its 2005 through 2016 toyota vanguards. owners are urged to contact their toyota dealer who will fix the problem for free. don't you hate it when a slowpoke is clogging up the fast lane on the

lawmakers in hawaii are trying to get them to move over. drivers would recieve a ticket if they're caught under the speed limit in the far left lane... or if there are 3 or more cars behind them. supporters of the new bill say it would help reduce traffic jams and road rage... critics say it would be nearly impossible to enforce. amtrak riders in the northeast can now bring their pets along for the ride -- but only on the weekend. the railroad says they will now allow small pets to accompany their owners on saturdays and sundays... as long as the animal is in a carrier and weighs under 20 pounds. travelers will have to pay a 25- dollar surcharge and rules vary by station. amtrak says service animals still ride free of charge any day of the week. people are getting a chance to sit down with our local police officers to talk about issues in their communities. investigating a house fire on the east side of town this morning. no one was hurt -- but the fire happened at a home that had previously been the backdrop of a possible homicide. fox five's nick lagrange is live near the intersection of charleston and lamb with how investigators think this fire was started. nick? dave and maria -- this is the home at address 52 sherill circle. that address may sound familiar, since there was another fire here back in november of last year. the only difference is, that november fire yielded four injuries, one death, and an ongoing homicide investigation. this fire happened at about 10:45 wednesday night. it's a one-story home, and images las vegas fire and rescue tweeted last night show heavy flames engulfing much of the house. the fire was put out in about 20 minutes with no damage to surrounding homes, and no injuries. back in november -- crews put out a

address, where four people were injured. the body of a man was later found inside the home at that time -- investigators said all of the surviving victims appeared to have been restrained inside the home before the blaze was intentionally started. they also said it appeared the man -- whose body was found inside the house -- was the victim of a homicide. police aren't speculating as to whether or not there is a connection between that november fire and this one. but it is something they will certainly look into. a cause of this fire, has not yet been determined. dave and maria?

for two armed men wanted in connection with a brutal home invasion robbery. suspects broke into a home in sun city anthem yesterday tying up a 72- year-old woman and ransacking her house, taking cash and valuables. those living in the 55 and older community say it's possible the suspects knew exactly what they were doing. whose a new york police officer, retired. he made an comment. he said often times you have a case like this it's somebody has been in there doing work and they've cased the house. they know what they want and they could care less whether the owners there or not they're just coming in." the victim suffered minor injuries, but is expected to be okay. police don't have a good description of the suspects, so if you know anything you're asked to call henderson police right away. a manhunt continues this morning after a shooting near u- n-l-v. it happened last night at the

"we need to have the revenue streams that we currently have as well as into the future... so we can continue to do what we were designed to do and that's to fill rooms in the destination." bowling agrees especially at a time when other cities like seattle and chicago are pouring billions into their convention business. "they have one goal and that goal is to steal share from las vegas. we need to take that threat seriously." however this tax dollar "tug of war" plays out the lvcva is bullish on the future of las vegas. diversity is the key it's not just about blackjack and slot machines anymore las vegas is growing into a big boy city.
