parties, a lot is on the line for presidential candidates ahead of tonight's iowa caucuses.... plus... hundreds are coming together to help a city, where people living in it had their water contaminated with lead. and someone comes to the rescue to save a dog from a freezing we'll have that for you coming up in just a bit. good morning, i'm ally crutcher. jerry is on assignment. storm track seven meteorologist eileen loan is here now with your storm track seven forecast. fog is taking over the kwwl viewing are this morning and it is dense in many

careful. temperatures are at or just below freezing so there are some slick spots on the roads. the fog will break up, but more clouds will track in and that is from the next system that is bringing our blizzard like conditions to the state. today will be mild with temps in the 30s, but the snow today's the big day. we're just hours away from people all across the hawkeye state coming together to vote in the iowa caucuses. with hillary clinton and bernie sanders leading the democratic charge, and donald trump, ted cruz and marco rubio among the republicans battling it out for voters. some candidates will stop by eastern iowa before the caucuses. today, donald trump will be in waterloo and cedar rapids. ted cruz will be in marion. we will also have extended coverage tonight -- to bring you all the action.

rally in des moines on the drake university campus. the presidential candidates are of course in the spotlight right put-in by volunteers goes unnoticed.... kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in the newsroom.. she can be each candidate.. there's thousands of volunteers... some of these volunteers put their lives on hold and moved to iowa months ago.... here's a look at jeb bush's campaign headquarters... they open at 7 in the morning... staffers and volunteers are here until nine at night... some "there's a lot of locals, there have come from neighboring states." "i usually do calls in then i go out and canvas for a few hours and then i come back and do calls." many volunteers say that iowans understand the stakes that come with being first in the nation.

put a lot of thought into choosing their candidates. we've got you covered live in gilbert... kwwl news. today a lot of the volunteers are out canvassing and making calls for the final push. people from different faiths in the cedar valley come together to pray before the big day. it's the first time an interfaith prayer was held at the al-noor islamic center here in waterloo. muslims, christians and jewish people prayed together. organizers say it was ideal to have it before the iowa caucuses... "because this is a time when iowans have great privilege, great responsibility. and we wanted to call attention to the need to remember all our neighbors." they also prayed for leaders to guide them on the right path. it was sponsored by the cedar valley interfaith council. today, federal investigators are expected to release evidence and reports on a deadly amtrak train derailment.

excessive speed has already been cited as a factor in the accident which killed eight people and injured more than 200 others. but the n-t-s-b has yet to say why the train was going too fast as it rounded a curve. five people are dead after a fire broke out in a southeast michigan home. firefighters say the blaze started in a home about 30 miles from detroit. they say all five victims were in their late 20s and early 30s and worked together at a restaurant. there were no survivors. no word what caused the fire. three people are dead after a small plane crashed in georgia over the weekend. the plane crashed shortly after taking off from a nearby airport... and then caught fire. no word what may have caused the plane to crash or who was on board the plane. the airport has been closed. a dubuque county supervisor, who also served in the iowa senate, has died. tom hancock died over the weekend. he served with the epworth fire department for 45 years, including 16 years as chief. he was 67-years- old. police are investigating who

jewish center in tennessee. someone set the cars on fire just outside a cultural center. investigators believe prejudice may have been the motivation behind the attack. police have notified the f-b-i. officers are also stepping up patrols near other jewish centers and houses of worship. hundreds of plumbers volunteered to replace faucets in homes of people living in flint, michigan this weekend. about 3-hundred plumbers spread out around the city to start replacing faucets and installing water filters. people in the area have been depending on water bottles since the city switched the water system to the flint river - which contaminated the tap water... "it's our community. it's right here. this isn't some other country. this is america. these are all our american brothers and sisters." homeowners say they're thankful for the repairs, and the plumbers say they're happy to help the place they call home. a man saves a dog from a freezing iowa river. he helped the dog's owner as

here's what senator cruz had to say in response... i will apologize to no one for caucuses. cruz will also be in eastern iowa today, campaigning in marion. meanwhile -- democratic candidate bernie sanders catches up with his supporters in waterloo. he talked about a variety of topics. some of which included his plans for the economy, having free tuition for higher education and his support for planned parenthood. he worked to encourage his supporters to show up to caucus... "republican governors all over this country are trying to supress the vote. nobody votes that is great because then big money will be able to carry the date. we win when large numbers for people come out to vote." the senator says he's very grateful for the nearly 15- thousand volunteers -- showing their support -- right here in the hawkeye state.

morning... and usually volunteers and staff leave around 9. today that might be different. we've got you covered live in the newsroom... amanda gilbert... kwwl news. some of these volunteers moved across the country.. from as far as florida.. to campaign in iowa. continuing coverage... early voting is available today for the waterloo schools special election tomorrow. you can vote at the black hawk county courthouse today from eight this morning until four thirty. the auditor's office is really encouraging people to come out today -- due to tomorrow's forecast. he says the iowa secretary of state may postpont an election due to a weather emergency -- but he says --you shouldn't count on it. one person is dead and several homes and cars are now damaged following a winter storm moving through southern california. in san diego, a driver died when a giant tree fell onto their car. forecasters warned the storm could bring flooding and mud

traffic was at a standstill for several hours near the california- nevada border after a 29-vehicle crash. 25 vehicles and four semi-trucks were involved in the pile-up. it's unknown how many people were hurt or the extent of the weather and snowy conditions played a factor in causing the crash. two virginia tech students are charged in connection with the abduction and murder of a virginia girl. a vigil was held over the weekend for 13-year-old nicole lovell. her body was found over the weekend in north carolina. state and federal authorities are continuing to investigate. two escaped inmates being taken back to jail after more than a week on the run. they were captured over the weekend after being found in a stolen van. a woman alerted police when she saw a matching description of the vehicle. investigators say they've already tightened security at the jail... with more changes to come after an investigation. you've heard the cat stuck in a tree story before -

rescue both the cat and his owner. the owner tried to get his cat out of the tree when his ladder fell. firefighters then put the ladder back up for the owner - he came down - but the cat was still stuck! finally - rescuers took a bucket up in the firetruck's ladder and brought him down. people are coming together to support a retired police officer and his k-9 officer companion. ohio state law mandates if an officer retires before the k-9, he or she forfeits their right to purchase the dog. but the retired officer doesn't want to be separated from his dog ajax... so his friend started a go-fund- me page, where more than "i'm amazed at everybody who cares about this. the the support... it's just amazing." all extra proceeds will be donated to an organization that provides bullet proof vests for k-9 officers. it's coming up on today
