tv Way Too Early MSNBC February 3, 2016 2:30am-3:01am PST
out a win in new hampshire. and hillary clinton dares bernie sanders to debate her in his own backyard. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." good morning. it's wednesday, february 3, i'm jonathan capehart. donald trump spent yesterday in new hampshire, but trump had a lot to say about the state of the republican race. including what his campaign might have done differently in iowa. >> i came in second. i came in a strong second. i think that we did very well. i didn't expect to do so well. i guess what did happen is one poll came out that said i'm four or five points ahead and that maybe built up a false expectation for some people. i spent far less than anybody else. and had i nope i was going to be
like -- known i was going to be liked as much as i am in iowa and people did like me, i would have maybe spent a little bit more and i would have been there a little bit more. and i maybe would have won it. i think some people were disappointed i didn't go into the debate. if i had to do it again, i would have done the exact same thing. the reason is, you know why? because i raised $6 million for the vets in one hour. so if i took a second place instead of a first place and could give the vets $6 million i'll do that all day long. >> according to "the washington post," of the top six candidates in monday night's caucuses trump spent only $300 each compared to $600 for marco rubio and $700 for ted cruz and ben carson put down $3,100 per vote and jeb bush spent a whopping $5,200. trump kept his focus on ted cruz
yesterday, tweeting everybody who watched ted cruz far too long overly flamboyant speech last night would say that was his howard dean moment. and trump accepted the endorsement of scott brown of massachusetts and countered cruz for attacking universal health care. >> i have been opposed to obamacare from the day they conceived it. and ted cruz comes out with an ad that i'm in favor of obamacare. can you believe this? all of a sudden, i see an ad or something, donald trump is in favor of obamacare and people are calling, oh, i thought you were against it. that's too bad. what kind of people do we have running for office? no, it's honestly really, really dishonest. i think i know why. you know why? because he was born in canada. >> trump hit cruz last night after ben carson accused him of deceiving voters in iowa on caucus night. >> he said he left iowa.
carson is a nice guy, ben. so ben is all of a sudden getting calls that he quit the race. these are dishonest people these politicians. these are worse than real estate people in new york i'm telling you. no, no, these are truly dishonest people. during a caucus, ben carson has quit the race. and ben didn't quit the race. in other words ben carson quit and let me have your votes. what kind of crap is this? >> and yesterday cruz issued a written apology after some of his backers announced that carson was headed back to florida and not new hampshire. quote, our campaign updated grass roots leaders just as we would with any breaking news story. they should have sent around the follow-up statement saying that he was staying in the race when that came out. this was a mistake from our end and i apologize to dr. ben
carson. the carson campaign suggested it was too little too late and that the rumor cruz's campaign spread likely affected the results. jeb bush needs a strong finish in new hampshire after winning a meager 3% of the vote in iowa. he's already hinted at bringing out his brother and now his mother, first lady barbara bush is set to join him tomorrow. >> no, my mom is not going to hit -- i know the donald got all excited by saying that my mom, you know, was going to come and he said well, your mom can't negotiate with isis. to show you how idiotic donald trump is as it relates to foreign policy, we're not going to negotiate with isis. if my mom did negotiate with isis it would be a tough negotiation. far better than he could do. >> governor chris christie left early for new hampshire before
caucusing even began. he got fewer than 4,000 votes. eager to get on the trail yesterday, he trained his sights on marco rubio pummeling him in front of the case in a way that chris christie can. >> i'm going to work. you know me, unlike some of the other campaigns i'm not the boy in the bubble. okay? we know who the boy in the bubble is up here who never answers your question, who's scripted and controlled because he can't answer your questions. so when senator rubio gets here, when the boy in the bubble gets here, i hope you ask him some questions. because it's time for him to start answering questions. he wants to say this race is over. it's all him. it seems to me he should have to sit across from you and answer the questions the way i can. and he hasn't. so now it's time for him to man up and step up and stop letting all of his handlers write his speeches and handle it. that's what they do. but that's taxing for someone who's never done anything like that. >> today chris christie called you the boy in the bubble.
those are some strong words from christie. >> yeah, he's had -- it's been a tough couple of days for chris and a couple of the other guys. look this campaign isn't about personal insults, if they want to do that, that's fine. it will reflect on them, not me. i'll focus on the future of the united states of america. >> and news from late last night, republican candidate rick santorum has postponed his scheduled events in south carolina. the campaign is citing logistical issues and he'll be doing media in washington, d.c. today. this after the 2012 iowa caucus winner finished in 11th place monday night. in an interesting moment from the caucus making the rounds on the web, a santorum precinct captain in des moines showed chris hayes the tally sheet only there were no votes for santorum on it. >> and santorum there's an "x" next to him. >> yeah. yeah. >> well, you didn't vote for
him? >> i -- as i was writing down, my pen ran out of ink. i can't ask someone for a pen while i'm doing this. >> you're the santorum dude. >> yeah. >> failure to launch. >> failure to launch is what it sounds like. >> 18 hours after iowa's democratic caucuses began, the associated press officially declared hillary clinton the winner. the iowa democratic party reports that clinton won 49.8% of state delegate equivalents, while sanders won 49.6%. but on a day when so many of the headlines framed caucus night as a victory for senator sanders, no matter what placed -- what place he finished in, both he and secretary clinton framed their performances as historic. >> i am so thrilled that i'm coming to new hampshire after winning iowa. i could tell you will i have won
and i lost there. it's a lot better to win. >> last night in iowa, we made history. we started off in that state depending on the poll 40, 50, maybe 60 points behind. no money, no political organization. and no name recognition and we fought secretary clinton to a virtual tie. >> senator sanders, are you conceding the race in iowa? >> we want to look at some of the numbers. the last i saw is we were four delegates down. as i understand it, there were some precincts actually where delegates were won with a flip of a coin. i'm not sure of that. i think there were six cases so we want to take a look at that. >> you heard senator sanders referencing the coin flips that decided county delegates at several precincts on monday night. the iowa democratic party now says sanders won six out of
seven coin flips throughout the state, while a count done by "the des moines register" found the exact opposite. but paper points out it's highly unlikely that the coin flips had any impact on the final outcome. as sanders' apparent refusal to concede, there's no formal process in place for contesting the iowa caucus results. a sanders aide tells msnbc they're exploring their options. with their focus shifting to next week's new hampshire primary, both democratic candidates held events yesterday. recent polls has shown senator sanders ahead of clinton by six or 23 points. meanwhile, it's still unclear whether or not the democrats will debate tomorrow night. sanders now says he'll participate only if clinton agrees to more debates in the future. including one in new york. >> i would like to see us do a debate in new york city. and i am a little bit amazed that secretary clinton does not want to have a debate in the state that she represented for seven years in the senate.
so that's what we would like. >> when we said we would do the debate, they came back with conditions. we met the conditions. then they said they want different conditions and we have tried to be very accommodating, but, you know, we have agreed with everything that they have asked us to do. and i sure hope we're in bernie sanders' backyard here in new hampshire. i sure hope he intends to show up in his neighboring state and let the people of new hampshire see us both on the debate stage. >> saying she intends to get the lead out of her city, karen weaver called for the immediate removal of lead pipes from the highest risk homes yesterday. although she was unable to say exactly what it would cost or when the repairs would start, the priority would be replacing lead pipes from the homes of pregnant women and with children under 6. weaver's call for action came hours after the fbi announced it was joining the investigation
into whether any laws were broken in flint's water crisis. meanwhile, the state's governor rick snyder is set to call for $30 million in state funding today to help pay the water bills of flint residents. still ahead on "way too early," lawyers for comedian bill cosby will be back in court today. pushing to get a sexual assault case thrown out. plus, could johnny manziel be without a team next season? the cleveland browns seem ready to move on. those stories and a check on weather when "way too early" comes right back.

bruce castor who chose not to charge cosby testified yesterday he had believed his decision shielded the comedian from ever being prosecuted in the case. cosby is trying to get the case tossed argue that castor made a legally binding no prosecution deal. castor says there is no agreement. he also said that there was insufficient credible evidence in the accusations to prove cosby's built beyond a reasonable doubt. constand was pursuing a legal case and still think that making mr. cosby pay money to ms. constand would be the best stage i could set. cosby has denied all allegation of sexual assault. there are new troubling developments in the zika virus outbreak. health officials in dallas, texas, are reporting the first known case of the virus being sexually transmitted. the zika virus is usually carried by mosquitos, but now the cdc tells nbc news it will issue a new advisory this week.

citing a league source. that news coming days after police in ft. worth, texas, responded to what they called a quote, altercation between manziel and an ex-girlfriend. meanwhile, "the new york daily news" reports that quarterback colin kaepernick wants out of san francisco following a disappointing season and the new york jets are the preferred destination. the jets are aware and interested, but that they're still in the early stages of off season planning. let's turn now to panthers star quarterback cam newton who last week told reporters that race plays a role in how he's perceived as a player. after saying last week, quote, i'm an african-american quarterback, that scares people because they haven't seen anything that they can compare me to. newton made clear yesterday he doesn't want the issue to linger ahead of sunday's game. >> i don't even to touch on the topic of black quarterback, because i think this game is bigger than black, white or even
green. so i think we limit ourselves when we label ourselves just black this, that and the third. i wanted to bring awareness because of that. but yeah, i don't think i should be labeled just a black quarterback because it's bigger things in the sport that needs to be accomplished. >> there have been 49 super bowls played before the one that will take place in santa clara on sunday. five african-american quarterbacks have started any of those games. and two have won. to the nba now and a vintage performance from kobe bryant last night in los angeles. the 37-year-old laker legend poured in a season high 38 points against the timberwolves including seven three pointers. that helped to boost his team to the victory and snapped the ten-game losing streak. boom. he should call it right now, that's it. he should go out on a high note. been a rough season for him. >> good for him and good for
