we're following breaking overnight news from norfolk. crews put out a fire at a home on marlboro avenue. that's off kimball terrace. our overnight photographer got this video of firefighters on the scene. the fire started around 2:00 this morning. no one was hurt. investigators haven't

happening today, it's the last day of work for hundreds at the newport news shipyard. more than 700 workers are losing their jobs! management announced the layoffs several months ago. rico bush is live outside the shipyard with the reasons why. rico. don, katie, since the layoffs began at newport news shipyard last september, the president of the company has maintained the reductions are based on a lack of workload, after all other options have been exhausted. president of newport news shipbuilding matt mulherin made the official announcement to reduce the workforce in early december. the company sent pink slips to 7- hundred 30 hourly workers and eight salaried employees, but the shipyard let them work for 60 more days. this morning will be the last time hundreds of workers will walk through the gates at newport news shipyard with an uncertain future at least until 20-17. the company has tried to give impacted workers a little hope in

because they say, employees can come back next year when the workload increases. still, as you may imagine, hearing this, may do very little to ease the pain for some workers who will out of work after today and looking for a paycheck until next year. even with all of cutbacks, a grim future still lies ahead for several hundred more employees at newport news shipyard. i'll explain why and what's ahead for them in 30 minutes. live in newport news, rico bush, 10 on your side. happening today, the virginia beach woman accused of killing her boyfriend is scheduled to be in court for a hearing. last september, police say megan dejesus stabbed 23-year-old terrance covington to death. investigators say it happened inside a home on sedgewick court. that's off great neck road. 10 on your side's jason marks will be in court later this morning. look for updates today on wavy news 10 midday. a follow up now to a story we brought you

breaking news. we have new video of a house fire in chesapeake. it happened late last night on laurel avenue, off indian river road. the two people living inside got out safely, but as you can see, the home is severely damaged. they had to spend the night somewhere else. no one was hurt. this morning, investigators are still working to find out how the fire started. happening today, dozens of civil service mariners will be back home after 5 months at sea. the usns leroy grumman is scheduled to return to naval station norfolk. the ship is a fleet oiler that helps refuel navy ships while they're at sea. while they were away, the crew replenished more than 6-point-8 million gallons of fuel. they'll pull up to the pier later this morning. water worries. hundreds of concerned neighbors came to this meeting last night to hear the city's plan to test well water for possible contaminants. find out what's expected to happen today. funny money. police say someone's been passing fake bills around hampton

doing this morning. water testing around fentress air field in chesapeake starts today. the city will check the well water after recent testing found high levels of chemicals called cfcs. the navy has been giving

military officials told us, that was just a precaution. they say the water is safe based on federal and state standards. but neighbors told us, it doesn't make them feel better. 10 on your side was there last night as more than 150 attended a meeting to learn more about the contaminated water and the planned testing. one health expert told us the water is safe to drink. 2 supers sot - dr. nancy evidence that indicates on a confirmed basis that drinking the water is associated with specific problems. 1:40:00 butt sot - holly meeks, chesapeake resident - clip 40 1:49:16 i makes me a little nervous but they're obviously doing what they can to be proactive about it. 1:49:22 so far, crews have only tested the water on fentress field property. the well water testing for residents ends on the 13th. results come back in march. we will keep following this story and let you know what the results show. people in hampton roads are helping the residents of flint, michigan with their water crisis. 10 on your side caught up with a realty team in

been collecting bottled water to ship north. they've gotten help from several motorcycle clubs, community groups and churches. now they just have to figure out how to get the water to flint. they hope someone with a big heart and a big truck helps them get the donations out by february 22nd. if you would like to donate a truck or water to the effort -- look for this story on wavy dot com. meanwhile, a house oversight committee is scheduled to hold a hearing in washington on the safe drinking water act in flint. the city's water source was contaminated with lead after city officials switched from the detroit water supply in 2014 to save money. crews did not properly treat the water. lead from pipes seeped into the system. residents started complaining about the color and smell of the water. a grieving father is making sure his daughter's death brings positive change to dare county. he wants every child to wear a helmet when they ride a bicycle. back in november, we told you about the death of 12-year-old bri

she was riding her bike when an suv hit her. bri died in the hospital, but while she was there, donations for her medical expenses poured in. her dad got so many, he decided to start a foundation in her name. school officials say thanks to the donations he helped gather, they can keep a supply to loan out or give away if kids forget theirs.
