we're told one of the woman in the car lives at the apartment where, again police say they discovered items apparently used for making meth. police say the scene is safe and under control --- but eight apartments remain evacuated. ofc. holly mcpherson -- newport news police 07:51:07 "you don't know what your neighbor is doing and on sunday we had a single residence and now we have a particular apartment building and you have other occupants in that building so we're trying to take every precaution to make everyone safe." at this time, we're told no one has been arrested but charges are expected. the teen and child i mentioned were handed over to a family friend - as several of the adults involved are being interviewed. state police and federal agents are assisting in this investigation. in newport news, i'm liz kilmer, 10 on your side. an update to that other bust from sunday.

charged a woman. 28-year-old autumn wells is in jail tonight. on valentine's day, officers say they discovered items used to make meth while responding to a call on middlesex road. they say they found more evidence in a vehicle outside the home. the haz-mat team came in. no one was hurt. breaking news in virginia beach -- firefighters have just gotten a fire under control. a viewer sent us this picture of the smoke on atterbury drive. that's in the lake edwards neighborhood. police dispatchers tell us no one was hurt. they say crews are still working there. breaking news on the highways -- v-dot says you can expect a major delay on i-64 in james city county. it says crews have closed all lanes headed west at overpass. that's because a truck crashed. they have put a detour in place. we'll let you know as soon as the lanes reopen. breaking news -- a judge has told apple it must help the f-b-i hack the cell phone of a san bernardino gunman. it means apple may have software, helping

bypass a so-called self-destruct feature. investigators believe access to critical information. in december, syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik murdered 14 people during a holiday luncheon. the couple died in a firefight with police. apple has five days to dispute the ruling. right now portsmouth police are searching for a wanted man. what they say started as surveillance, turned into a chase and crash in the truxton area today. one man is behind bars, a second was let go, and another suspect is still out there. 10 on your side's liz palka is live outside the police station. liz -- how did this all looking for a fugitive who was wanted on 15 charges. they ended up catching him. but, not before two crashes that left two people, including an officer, hurt. broken glass and crushed metal litter portsmouth boulevard...near the intersection with truxton

focused on the people who were inside the suspect vehicle...a silver ford focus. while trying to help the innocent bystanders who were struck while driving their dark gray honda accord on the boulevard. police spokeswoman misty holley says police were doing undercover surveillance on this man. 21 year old taquan harper. c38 16:33 - when that suspect vehicle stopped, the two officers who were following in those unmarked vehicles turned on their emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop at that point. that's when the suspect vehicle driver hit the gas pedal.... crashing into an unmarked police cruiser near ivey street. that officer was taken to the hospital and will be ok. police started pursuing harper, who was behind the wheel - with two other men in the car. c38 17:14 - they went down ivey street, down across some of the roadways here, hanson and woodstock. and eventually went through a couple of yards through here in this neighborhood tire tracks left on the property...lead back to portsmouth boulevard where holley says harper crashed into the

the hospital. police say harper and the man in his passenger seat got out and ran. another man stayed in the car where police took him into custody - and later released him without charges. police ended up catching harper on foot. c38 19:48 - that person warrants to include assaulting a law enforcement officer and numerous felony firearm violations. :56 harper now faces 20 charges after today's crash. police are still trying to find the second man who got away somewhere in the truxton/douglass park area. at last check, they did not have an id on him. live in portsmouth, liz palka, 10 on your side. douglass park elementary and portsmouth christian schools were locked down, during the search for the suspects. newport news police hope you can help find a man wanted for double murder. they say 26-year-old

43rd street near the intersection with orcutt avenue. officers believe hayes dantzler shot and killed two people. police found them dead in a van near 14th and wickham avenue last month. when we asked neighbors about hayes tonight -- they told us violent crime is out of his character feeds liz k raw interview something seriously went wrong in his world back in january -- police shot dantzler because they say he opened fire on them. he is out of the hospital and behind bars tonight. if you can help find hayes -- call the crime line. police will not be allowed to wear uniforms in court, if a portsmouth prosecutor gets her way. she made the request ahead of former officer stephen rankin's murder trial. he faces charges for shooting and killing 18-year-old william chapman last april. the shoplifting suspect was unarmed when rankin confronted him in the

frederick boulevard. the commonwealth's attorney and chapman's family say-- letting uniformed officers into court may influence the jury. (47:42 16) earl ((we are intimidating factor to the jury and we are very much concerned about that.)) runs; 10 rankin's attorney says he disagrees with the motion. it will go before a judge next tuesday. trial is set to start next month. a woman once charged with hiding her son's body -- now faces a murder charge in his death. prosecutors in hampton say they've upgraded their case against tonya slaton. last june, virginia state police say troopers found the remains of quincy davis in her car when troopers pulled her over on i-64. police say davis attended school in virginia beach, but no one has seen or heard from him since 2004. slaton is due in court next week. after a warm and soggy tuesday -- we're expecting another temperature drop.

strong storms hit the southeast with tornadoes today. this storm tore through florida. the national weather service says two e-f 1 tornadoes touched down in the southern part of the state. three surveillance cameras in mirarmar captured the wind and rain on video -- we haven't heard any reports of injuries. new tonight. a norfolk-based navy ship and the coast guard rescued three fishermen. the navy says the u-s-s carter hall crew was training when they got the call for help, monday. sailors

from two sinking boats. together with the coast guard -- they helped both crews to safety. one boat sank, but crews towed the second into the oregon inlet. we haven't heard any reports of injuries. only on 10 -- police may be trying to figure out how two completely different cases tie together. sources tell us police found evidence of credit card fraud while investigating a car accident today. overnight, officers say a car ran off the western freeway at cedar lane. first responders found a man and woman badly hurt inside. but two sources say -- police also found about 150 credit cards, and a machine: one used to melt cards and print new information. portsmouth police say that. detective misty holley/portsmouth police that normally happens, that there is another investigation going on. :41 mh: the crash investigation is still ongoing, and there may potentially be another investigation depending on what investigators

new information in a story we've been following for weeks -- the virginia beach school board has voted on a calendar for next year. it has decided to remove some teaching days. instead of 183-- it is now 181 days. the board says that will include two and a half days of professional development for students and staff. supporters believed it would help the entire system run more smoothly. opponents said it would hurt hourly workers. the virginia beach mayor says he's committed to light rail. that's the message will sessoms has for state officials. we've been telling you, transportation secretary aubrey layne has told the city to use state funding for the project or lose it. layne says he cannot hold 155-million dollars from other projects, if city council decides to take the issue to a

today marked the first day of a two week window that nfl teams could use their franchise tag to keep their best free agents. the big question for the redskins, will they use kirk cousins? i'm bruce rader, kirk cousins is set to become a free agent next month--and its redskins general manager scott mccluin are working on a long term deal. there was a report today that the talks have broken down--but expect to

continue. cousins "will" be back with the redskins next season, because the redskins don't have anybody else. if a deal can't be reached, the redskins will use their franchise tag and pay cousins around 20 million dollars, all of which will count against the salary cap. if cousins signs a long term contract, the money will probably be close, he'll have job security for several seasons and the redskins will take less of a cap hit. linebacker jerod mayo, a four star recruit out of kecoughtan high school in hampton and an all-american at tennessee, announced that he is "retiring a patriot." mayo, a two time pro bowler, has been a patriots team captain the past seven years and led the team in tackles for five straight seasons. plagued by injuries he played sparingly for a couple of seasons--was not a regular starter this year and now has decided his nfl days are over. when she was 14 years old macy causey was the youngest driver ever
