deadly derailment. today the ntsb is expected to release new evidence in the amtrak crash that killed 8 and injured more than 200 last year in philadelphia. the falls bridge will close for construction. we'll tell you about the work being done and how long it could impact your commute. 6:00 a.m. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm rosemary connors. if you thought yesterday was warm and it definitely was, this is only the beginning of something of a warming trend. let's get more details from first alert meteorologist bill henley. fill us in. >> warm and sunny yesterday, 58 the high temperature. today less sunny but warmer potentially. right now we're getting a mild start. there are a few scattered clouds overhead. that's helping to keep temperatures a bit elevated. 44 in philadelphia. thisç is where the wind has di down. it's calm for allentown, pottstown and reading. with a break in the clouds, the
temperatures have plummeted. there's enough of a breeze to keep the morning temperatures above freezing. the big melt continues. it accelerates this afternoon. by 11:00, 51 degrees. the clouds taking over as we head into the afternoon. there's a good possibility that umbrellas will be doing up. we go through the forecast hour by hour when i'm back in ten minutes. katy zachry is watching your first alert traffic. >> still watching this crash on 76 westbound around south street. you can see from our map here, a lot of red leading into this crash scene where there is a lane restriction. expect delays if you're headed on 76 westbound, passing through south street. there was a crash on route 202 northbound around church road that was tieing things up for the past 45 minutes or an hour. that has since cleared. you can see there was significant delay here in the northbound lane. everything is free and clear of any issues there.
your drive times northbound are looking good. so again, crash is clear. it was between route 30 and the excite for 252 which is in paoli. 95, 76 and 476 all in the year, no issues there. tracy? the iowa caucuses are now here. >> for the past year, the candidates have been crisscrossing the country campaigning and tonight they'll phone out if it was all work it. let's start with the democrats, bernie sanders and hillary clinton are running neck and neck in iowa. both made their final pitches to voters last night. >> monday night could be an historic night for this country. we can make history. i urge you all to come out to caucus. >> the incredible stories you've told me, your hopes, your worries. i am a better candidate and thanks to you, i will be a better president. >> you haven't had a winner in iowa -- the republicans donald trump steal the deal in iowa.
right now his closest rivals are ted cruz and marco rubio. all three held their final rallies last night. the iowa caucuses get under way at 8:00 this evening, our time. the final poll shows just how close the race is. on the republican side, donald trump leading ted cruz by five minutes, followed by marco rubio and ben carson. on the democratic side, hillary clinton has a three-point lead on bernie sanders. sense that's within the poll's margin of error, the contest is a statistical tie. count on nbc 10 for your complete coverage of the iowa caucuses. lauren mayk will be reporting live from iowa. she'll be reporting live this afternoon. also on the nbc 10 app and nbc10.com. official say an object struck an acela train last night.
it started out in washington and arrived safely in new york city. no passengers or crew members were hurt. today the ntsb is expected to release new information from last year's deadly amtrak derailment in philadelphia's port richmond neighborhood. matt delucia is live at 30th street station to tell us more about this report. matt? >> the main purpose of this release is to provide more information. but not a final determination as to what caused the crash of amtrak 188. in all, this report could somebody 2,000 paenls long. it could contain photos, black box data and interviews. it was back on the night of may 12th amtrak 188 was going 106 miles per hour around a 50 mile per hour curve when it derailed, killing 8 and injures more than 200 people. the release of this information will be the biggest since june of last year. one of the top points of interest will be the transcripts
ofç interviews taken last year. the documents are expected to be released this afternoon with that final analysis coming at least several months from now. one of the things the reports could lead to is change in regulation or practices. one major change happened just after the crash, a speed control mechanism is in place around that curve. we just got a statement from amtrak about the status of this investigation. i'm working on getting that for you in the next 30 minute. for now i'm live at 30th street station. 6:05. 42 degrees outside. for the third time in a week, a school threat in our area leads to an arrest and extra concern for parents and students. this time it happened in camden county. there are extra police at cherry hill high school east after a threat surfaced on social media.
a juvenile is under arrest for making the threat. over the weekend, the police checked the school and didn't find anything dangerous. the camden county police department is asking for your help in finding a missing 13-year-old girl from parkside. savannah rogers was reported missing last night from her home on park boulevard. she was last seen wearing a black jacket, black and white sweat pants and red and white sneakers. anyone with information is asked to call police. more than 24 hours after a shooting in bethlehem, two people are behind are bars and teen victims are still in the hospital. police say the 14 and 16-year-olds were hit by gunfire while walking by a church on the south end of bethlehem. one of the teens is in critical condition. the investigation is ongoing but are not looking for any other suspects. police will not confirm whether saturday night's shooting in bethlehem is connected to another shooting in
nearby allentown. allentown police have arrests two 19-year-old men. a ç39-year-old victim was hit the torso by gunfire. he's expected to be okay. 6:07 and 42 degrees in philadelphia. police have charged the person of interest in the stabbing on a septa bus. this is surveillance video of the suspect. the incident happened on friday on the route 56 bus on torresdale avenue in frankford. today marks the start of black history month. the first produclamation was issued in 1976. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> getting a mild start this morning. the melting continues this morning and through the day today. i am tracking showers but this
time only rain showers for our area. they will be arriving this afternoon and into the evening hours. i'm tracking some record temperatures later in the week. it will be well into the 60s. 37 degrees in reading, 44 in philadelphia. and in the 50s right now in cape may. a range of temperatures, 30s, 40s and 50s to start with. we have clouds but no sign of any of the rain just yet. that's new in this afternoon. radar is completely clear for our area. in western pennsylvania and central pennsylvania, this is the line of showers arriving here this afternoon. before they move in, the temperatures move up, even warmer than this morning. here's the future cast showing the temperatures taking off to 57 degrees in northeast philadelphia, that's by 11:00 in the morning. we'll be watching for rain vole developing at 2:00 in the afternoon. all the temperatures well above freezing as the rain showers move through later today.
your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast. 50 in camel back, 51 in bethlehem. showers will move through light. at the shore, evening showers milford, 59 degrees this afternoon. we could hit 60 degrees today in philadelphia before the showers arrive, during the afternoon hours, 50s for wilmington and malvern. there is warmer weather ahead. i have the time of record temperatures with the seven-day forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. >> there are a couple of accidents, one on 202, one on 76. katy zachry has you covered on both. >> good news to address. the 202 one has completely cleared. and in just the last few minutes, the one on 76 westbound around south street, that has since cleared.
no more delays on 202. the drive times are back to normal. no delay on 6 westbound o eastbound around that traffic scene. moving into new jersey, cherry hill, the traffic passing through the condition's highway area. light traffic, no major issues to report in that neck of the woods. for our delaware drivers, if you're on 95 this morning, your drive times look really good. 295 if you're on 95 northbound between 295 and 495 that will take you ten minutes, the same if you're going the opposite way southbound. >> 6:10. 44 degrees in philadelphia and a bridge in east falls is closing for construction. >> nbc 10's drew smith is live along the falls bridge this morning. drew, very busy for people who are trying to avoid 76. >> this area is always crowded. there will be emergency repairs. we're not talking about a one huff day thing. we'll tell you how long it will last. where you can get detours and why some people are actually pretty surprised about this.
it's 6:14. in the flint, michigan, water crisis, hundreds of plumber are volunteering to replace faucets and install water filters in home. lead got into the city's water supply that contaminated the tap water. people now are being forced to drink bottled water. federal and state officials are urging people in flint to get their water tested. meantime, philadelphia's water department says the city's drinking water is safe and denies that its testing methods are fixed. a newspaper report said the department asks customers to flush their pipes before testing so it can downplay the amount of lead found in samples. the department says it follows
best practices when testing. happening today, an emergency repair project will close the falls bridge over the schuylkill river. >> the bridge connects martin luther king drive to kelly drive in east falls. it's a very popular route for drivers trying to stay off the expressway. you won't be able to dry over it but the falls bridge will be open to anyone walking or biking. nbc 10's drew smith is live by the bridge to explain why it's closing and forç how long. drew? >> those detour signs have been up for a couple days now. we were just talking to some drivers here along the bridge. they seem to have no idea what is going to be happening here today. the streets department is asking for your patience. the falls bridge is more than 120 years old. inspectors late last year found critical structural problems underneath it. the product ekt wewill strength support.
the projected date that it will be fixed is april 1st. did you know this bridge was closing. >> i didn't have a clue. >> what will it be like for traffic around here? >> it will be real busy. >> the detours will take you up to the city avenue bridge. there are cars coming down the bridge right now but it will be closing today. don't get used to this. again, the good news is, one sidewalk will be open so this popular trail if you're coming from the art museum will be open. you can loop around on foot. drew smith, nbc 10 news. one traffic note. let's get you updated. >> 6:16 on this monday. katy zachry is keeping an eye on the vine street expressway. what do you see? >> we've had a few crashes. they have since cleared. i'm keeping my eye out for anything else that happens. we'll focus on drive times.
the vine street expressway traffic east and westbound are running smoothly, average speeds in the upper 40s. a lot of green on the vine. no delays there. there was fortunately no overnight construction that was hindering people's commute. the vine has been open overnight at all hours. slight delays 95 southbound between woodhaven and the vine, it will take you about 17 minutes. 76 eastbound heading into center city philadelphia from the blue route, a 14-minute drive. and the blue route between the schuylkill, 15 minutes. you might see light pockets of volume but nothing major. 76 at gi+ard avenue earlier we had a crash 76 westbound at south street in the grays ferry area. this is a live look at how things are running smoothly on the schuylkill. fingers crossed. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 17 minutes after 6:00. a mild morning and dry. even though we have some clouds
moving through, there will be breaks of sunshine to begin with. we were less than an hour away from sunrise this morning. 44 degrees in philadelphia. 13 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. it will go even warmer this afternoon with temperatures climbing to near 60 degrees later today. there will be clouds around. you can see them at the shore. that's a live view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. there will be rain arriving with the clouds. not this morning. this morning we'll be watching the temperatures climb from the 30s, 40s and 50s into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees this afternoon. already 52 degrees in cape may at the airport, a mix of 40s and 50s in northern cape may county, atlantic county is seeing the same. 50 degrees right now in north field. mild start. some of that snow that's still on the ground, it's melting this morning. we're see that melting accelerated this afternoon. even though we have clouds coming in and taking over during the afternoon hours, leading to some rain. it will be mild the entire time.
before the rain arrives, the temperatures warm up nicely. the first rain drops at noontime in lancaster county, those will be on the move coming from philadelphia during the afternoon hours. into the evening commute, that's 4:00 today. by 7:00, the skies start to clear. that means a chillier one tomorrow. another warmup will be here at wednesday. wednesday at noontime, 60 degrees in philadelphia. rain will be moving through. it will be a warm wednesday but it will also be a rainy one. today, showers this afternoon. through it all, it will stay mild, 57 to 60 degrees with winds out of the westç 5 to 12 miles an hour. 31 in the morning tomorrow, 52 in the afternoon. bright sunshine for groundhog day. on wednesday, the sunshine disappears but so does the cold. record high temperature of 65 degrees. rain in the afternoon could be heavier, moving through during the afternoon hours. and then clearing out with gusty

involved in the crash. it happened on west olney avenue at north park avenue in fern rock. expect delays. that intersection definitely closed off for the time being. i'll keep my eye on it and let you know when things clear. 95 at cottman avenue, this is southbound. things starting to build there, a lot of volume. expect delays northbound. you're running just feign. no issues to report on 95 northbound. taking a look at drive times, 76 eastbound headed into center city philadelphia, 19 minutes. the blue route both north and southbound between 76 and 95, free and clear of any issues. deptfo deptford, new jersey, this is a live look at the 42 freeway. no issues on 41. when i see you in a bit we'll take a look at the drive times on the 42 freeway between 45 and the walt whitman bridge. no you to decision 2016. the iowa caulks are tonight. it's the first chance to see who americans will choose for president. >> iowa is the first state to hold caucuses.
they're used as a measuring stick for the white house campaigns during the primary season. when it comes to republicans, they indicate a high turnout will favor donald trump and a low turnout, ted cruz and marco rubio could benefit.ç yesterday, the gop hopefuls delivered final pitches to iowa voters. >> 16 years and you haven't picked a winner. please pick a winner this time. okay? i'm going to win. >> we've been burned over and over and over again. the stakes are too high. we cannot be burned again. >> this is not about making a point. it's about making a difference. this election has to be about winning the future. i no he that we will. meantime, democrats bernie sanders and hillary clinton highlighted the contrast between the two in their final stump speeches but took no personal shots at each other. a winter storm is expected to arrive in iowa just as voters will be making picks for
president. we checked with meteorologist bill henley. he says the snow is expected to start in iowa after midnight and that the heaviest snow will stay to the western part of the state. it could get anywhere from 3 to 5 inches. we'll keep an eye on this storm. once the iowa voters make their choices, it's on to new hampshire and the first in the nation primary one week from tomorrow. to get voters ready, mismbs will host a democratic presidential debate this thursday night at 9:00. hillary clinton, bernie sanders and martin o'malley are expected to attend. count on nbc 10 for your complete coverage of the iowa caucuses. lauren mayk is reporting live from iowa through tomorrow. watch her reports on nbc 10 news. 6:35. 44 degrees in philadelphia. happening today, we're expected to get the first new information about that deadly amtrak
derailment in june. it killed 8 people and hurt more than 200. matt, what are we expected to learn today. >> this release is expected to be around 2,000 pages long. it will be the bank of information used to determine the official cause of the crash of amtrak 188. why it was speeding around that curve at the frankford junction. this report shouldç detail wha was in the black box on board that train, also photos and documents and perhaps most important, interview transcripts, notably from the train's engineer, who was at the controls when the train crashed. from what we know at this point, he told investigators he does not remember what happened just before the derailment. the ntsb determined he was not talking or texting on his cell phone at the time and bostan has not been charged with a crime.
in part, the goal is for us to fully understand what happened and how we can prevent a similar tragedy from occurring in the future. beyond that, amtrak says it is fully cooperating but will not comment on anything else. this report is the kind of thing that investigators will be looking at for the next few months at least. especially lawyers for the victims and their families. amtrak is being sued for close to $300 million. live at 30th street station, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. philadelphia police are looking for two armed robbers who posed as police officers. investigators tell us the men used a gun and shouted "police" as they barged into an auto body shop in bustleton on saturday. it was good samaritans in bucks county who took down a robbery suspect over the weekend. it was all caught on camera. this morning, we are learning that the suspect is no stranger
to the law. police have identified the robbery suspect as george blackwell. the nbc 10 viewer caught the takedown on his cell phone. the video shows three bystanders tackling blackwell after police say he used a box cutter to rob a woman at a shopping center. the men held blookwell down until police arrived. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. 22 minutes before 7:00. we are getting a break fromç t cold. overnight the temperatures stayed elevated so the melting continues. not only first thing this morning but all day today. a nice warmup, ahead of showers. i'm tracking showers in western central pennsylvania. this time around, it's only going to be rain showers for us. there's more wet weather on the way for later in the week. but it's going to come with record warmth. temperatures well into the 60s. right now, not bad. 37 degrees in reading. 44 in philadelphia. and cape may is starting off in the 50s.

we're following this breaking traffic story. skyforce 10 is over fern rock where a small school bus and a septa bus collided. minor injuries being reported. some have been taken to a local hospital. it happened just after 6:00 this morning. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter katy zachry is following this. she will update us and get you around it in just about ten minutes. happening today, temple students will get a chance to discuss the proposed $100 million football stadium near campus with the university's president. outside the students only meeting there will be protesters. some community members are upset they are not allowed to attend the meeting and they want the board of trustees to reject the stadium plans. in recent demonstrations they've said noise and lack of parking for the 35,000 fans would disrupt their north philadelphia neighborhood. today the world health organization will meet to make a major decision about the zika virus and whether to declare it a global public health
emergency. the mosquito-borne virus has been lempged to birth defects and brain damage in infants. brazil is ground zero for the outbreak. colombia has 20,000 cases reported. >> it's very difficult. a lot of times they just don't know what the consequences are and the dangers are. >> doctors in affected countries are urging women to use insect repellent and wear protective clothing to prevent mosquito bites. 6:46. 44 degrees in philadelphia. happening today, the university of pennsylvania will start selling tickets to hear caitlyn jenner speak on campus later this month. jenner of course is one of the most famous transgender celebrities and organizers hope that her visit will stimulate conversation on the campus. she will be joined by pen alum buzz basinger who wrote the revealed jenner's new identity to the world. tickets go on sale this morning.
the first vote in the presidential nominating process were we're talking about the iowa caucuses, they take place tonight and have the potential to help or hurt white house hopefuls. both democrats and republicans. in iowa, each party caucuses differently. republicans show up to their caucus location and simply cast a secret ballot for the candidate of their choice. here's something to keep in mind. the republican caucus winner has not won the gop nomination since 2000. for the democrats, the process is a little bit more involved. first, voters hear pitches from representatives for each candidate, then the voters divide up into groups based on their picks. they stand with that representative. if a candidate earns 15% or less, they have to vote or someone else. you can couldn't on nbc 10 for your complete coverage of the
iowa caucuses. lauren mayk is in iowa. we'll hear from her in just about ten minutes. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clouds are moving into the area but it is dry this morning and mild, too, the temperatures never got cold nover night. the melting continues. and this afternoon, in spite of clouds coming in and taking over, we'll see the temperatures climb even more. 12 minutes before 6:00. we have sunshine on hold for most of the day. we'll see a few breaks this morning. a warmup nonetheless. 44 degrees, 13 degrees warmer than it was yesterday at this time. and rain holds off until this afternoon. what i'm expecting today, rain wise, light stuff. the temperatures, mild. usually we would cool into the 20s this time of day. we're about 20 degrees warmer than normal in philadelphia. chester county, westchester is down to 40 degrees, ç48 in
phoenixville. clouds moving in. with these clouds will come rain, light rain. that's all we've been tracking in the williamsport area, pittsburgh. the light showers due in this afternoon. you can see snow to the west. that will be heading for iowa. looks like it will miss the caucuses. the heaviest snow will come overnight tonight and into tomorrow. that snow will be heading our way for later in the week. along with it will come warm air. check out future snow totals. by 11:00 tonight, very little snow on the ground in iowa. by tomorrow morning, an inch. caulks wouldn't have any problem. this is the snow that will be arriving here wednesday as rain. that's all we'll see this afternoon. some scattered rain showers and mild. look at those temperatures, 57 degrees to 60. here's the first day of february. the second day of february, groundhog day, a bit chillier, 31 degrees, 52 in the afternoon. bright sunshine all day tuesday. look at the warmup.
here comes that iowa snow, though only as rain for us. record warmth. the record is 62 degrees. we'll blow past that with a high of 65 degrees on wednesday. gusty winds will bring the temperatures down for thursday, friday, sunshine, look at the warmup over the weekend. after cold mornings, afternoon temperatures near 50 degrees. 10 minutes before 7:00. we areal toing the -- are following the accident of a school bus and a septa bus. no children on the school bus. >> i'm told the septa bus is a route "l" bus. skyforce 10 is over the scene, live. this is the school bus. it's a smaller bus. no kids on board but there were three individuals on board. nearly two dozen on the septa bus. anyone complaining of injuries at the scene, we're being told they're minor injuries.
several people have been taken to nearbyç einstein hospital. this is the area you want to avoid, wefern rock at west olne and north park avenue. we are seeing delays, 95 southbound, pretty typical for this time of work. if you're going between woodhaven and the vine, add a little bit of extra time. that trip will take you 24 minutes. 76 eastbound headed into the city, it will take you 28 minutes. >> the stories you need to know this morning. >> a bridge will be out of commission for a whole. drew smith is following that for us, drew? >> the last morning commuters are heading over the falls bridge. we'll tell you when it's going to close and for how long.
time now to get a check of of the stories you need to know about as you start your morning. >> just about five before 7:00. let's start with the iowa caucuses. lauren mayk is in iowa. today is the day, the day of the iowa caucuses. but that does not mean that the work is over for candidates. in fact, a lot of them have a packed schedule today. chris christie, for example, he starts at 7:30 this morning. they know that there are still people out there who are undecided. in fact, i spoke with a family who had been out to see eight different candidates and were planning to see their ninth, rand paul today, giving them just a little bit of time before the caucuses start at 7:00, both for the democrats and for the
republicans. and we will have live reports for you starting at 4:00. for now, in des moines, iowa, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. i'm matt delucia live at 30th street station. we're expecting to learn more information about the crash of amtrak train 188. we're expecting to see some 2,000 pages of documents, photo and transcripts related to the crash in may of last year that killed eight and injured more than 200 in the city's frankford neighborhood. we're not expecting to get the official cause of the crash of why that train was speeding around the curve but this is the kind of information that will be used to make that determination. live at 30th street station, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. amtrak is investigating after something hit a window on a train traveling through bridesburg. it was a washington to new york acela express train. no one was hurt. the cherry hill school district says you'll see a major
police presence ator thisry hill east this morning. i'm drew smith, live in east falls where the final cars for the final morning commute are able to go over the falls bridge. this closes today. they've got the road blocks out ready to çgo. there was emergency repairs necessary because of structural damage. it will keep this bridge out of commission for vehicle traffic until april 1st. if you head through this area, plan ahead. the detour will take you up to the city avenue bridges. drew smith, live in east falls, nbc 10 news. i'm katy zachry, watching a school bus crash in the fern rock section of philadelphia. skyforce 10 has been over the scene since shortly after it happened. if you look below, you can see this school bus, fortunately no students were on. there were three individuals and 20 people on the septa bus. it's part of the route "l" line.
there were minor injuries reported from the scene. that looks like it will be out there for some time. you can take broad street around that. there are heavy delays around 95 southbound and woodhaven and the vine. there are also heavy delays if you're headed into center city philadelphia between the blue route and the vine street expressway. also on the vine around 24th street, there's a disabled vehicle. i'm seeing heavy delays on the 42 free wai northbound, north of 41. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> 12 minutes before sunrise. you can see some clouds starting to move into the area. that's a live view from the loews hotel. scattered clouds visible from the mellon bank building to there. they will eventually lead to some rain this afternoon. but nothing but rain. look at these temperatures. not bad. okay. it's cold in allentown. that's the exception. most of the area is well above freezing. 50 degrees in atlantic city.
