delaware valley. there are three new confirmed cases in our area. we are live with what you need to know before you make travel plans to mexico, latin america or the caribbean. this morning we're tracking snow showers. here's a live picture of snow falling at philadelphia international airport. also snowing in malvern, chester county. watch for slick spots during your drive to work wherever you are. 6:00 a.m., good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm vai sikahema. 31 degrees right now throughout the delaware valley. there are dozens of school delays, watch for them at the bottom of your screen. they're constantly being updated. let's get to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley. >> looking more impressive in south philadelphia than it did just a few minutes ago. the wind will be blowing through the day. that will make for colder temperatures tonight. it's cold enough for this to be sticking this morning.

steadier snow now in new castle county and delaware, moving into south jersey. this one line is on the move, quick shot of snow for eastern berks county, drying out there. just clearing pottstown and moving through areas north and west to start with. as far as philadelphia is concerned, there you can see the light snowfall and that band in upper montgomery county will be moving through this morning. a snowy start for wilmington, middletown and salem county as well as new jersey. then we'll be drying out. 31 degrees. this dropped down to 31, one degree down in the last hour. the 20s north and west, slippier spots, expect to font major roads have been treated but walkways and some driveways wilç be a bit slick to start with this morning. the snow, to start with, will be tapering off by 8:00 this morning. by 10:00, 11:00, we'll see breaks of sunshine. by 2:00 this afternoon, the

temperatures warmer. look at the wind at 19 degrees, that will make it feel colder through the day. your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i come back in ten minutes. jessica boyington following first alert traffic. >> we did have an earlier accident on the 30 bypass approaching route 202 northbound on the off ramp, the second in the same spot of the day. that is cleared out of the way. we want to stress to you watch getting on and off the ramps to any of the majors. the majors may seem clear but you'll find slippery spots on the ramps. on the new jersey turnpike down to 50 miles an hour from delaware memorial bridge to exit 14 in newark. also on the garden state parkway, that's down to 45 miles per hour from cape may to somers point. the area bridges are okay but there are speed restrictions still in place there. the commodore barry, the betsy and the ben, the walkway is also closed on the ben franklin bridge. no problems on the walt getting in philadelphia this morning. still, use extra caution. vai? decision 2016.

new hampshire's first in the nation primary has made winners of democrat bernie sanders and republican donald trump. they each scored commanding victories over their owe points. here are the numbers of the democrats, with 93% of vote counted, bernie sanders took 60% of the vote in new hampshire while hillary clinton got 39%. on the republican side, with 92% of vote in, trump has 35%, john kasich is in second at 16%, ted cruz and jeb bush are battling it out for third place. after his won, donald trump celebrated with his supporters. trump was jubilant at his victory speech in manchester. he thanked the voters, repeating his theme of making america great again. pointed specifically to jobs. >> i am going to be the greatest jobs president that god ever created. remember that.ç >> trump also congratulated the democratic winner, bernie sanders who spoke to his own

enthusiastic supporters last night. >> because of a huge voter turnout -- and i say huge -- we won. because we harnessed the energy and the excitement that the democratic party will need to succeed in november. >> there are several reports that sanders will meet with reverend al sharpton in new york city in an apparent move to reach out to african-american voters. big wins for donald trump and bernie sanders in new hampshire's first in the nation primary. i'm george spencer in manchester. coming up, why last night's results may have almost as much impact on the candidates who did not win. it's 6:04. in other news, the zoo ek ka virus beco -- zika virus becomes a real concern in our area, following

three new cases of the virus, those cases are in pennsylvania and delaware. matt delucia live at philadelphia international airport. can travelers heading out of the country, what can they do to protect themselves. >> reporter: there are prevention tips but first to these local cases, the women arrived back in pennsylvania and delaware with the virus, officials saying they travelled to the areas where this outbreak is effective right now. pennsylvania's secretary of health meantime, saying that the cases athat are happening right now pose no threat to the public. the zika virus is transmitted by mosquitos. we're seeing the okays pop up here in the u.s. because of people traveling over to those areas. a doctor specializing in infectious disease tell us that come summertime, the local mosquitos could spread the virus ch.

either way it's likely the virus will eventually show up in all 50 states. >> there are many people in our country travel to the large area where zika outbreaks are occurring, mexico, central america, south america, the caribbean, south pacific. so this will be, you know, pretty much an expected occurrence. we'll have people come back who have been infected. >> if you're still planning on going, i would still go. if not, i understand. make sure you take bug spray. there's different kinds they recommend you bring with you. that's definitely a positive thing to look out for. >> and that woman you just heard from, she just got back from cancun. she's 13 weeks pregnant. good advice, take precautions. the zika virus usually presents mild symptoms but for pregnant women there is an added risk of birth defects. the symptom include fever, rash, joint and muscle pain, conjunctivitis and headache. the cdc is advising if you could

change your travel plans, that would be a good idea. if you do need to travel to these areas, take precautions, wear insect repellent, long sleeve clothing and try to avoid standing water. the delaware department of health today, we're expecting an update on their first case of the zika virus. it is an adult woman. it is travel related but the woman is not pregnant. we're still gathering details as this unfolds, as we get more of these local cases. u.s. women's soccer star hope solo says the zika virus could keep her from going to the solo told "sports illustrated" if the games started today, she would not attend. the goalkeeper is the first high-profile athlete to comment on the threat of zika at the summer games. olympic officials say they plan

to address zika concerns in the coming weeks. police arrested a bucks county manç accused of sex cris dating back to 1996. investigators say roberto cruz sexually assaulted a 7-year-old girl as many as 50 times in bucks and montgomery counties. they also say he assaulted a 13-year-old girl and two women. according to police, the offenses happened over a 16-year period. meanwhile, today, state senators in pennsylvania plan to vote on whether to call for the removal of attorney general kathleen kane. they need 33 votes to pass the measure which would direct the governor to remove kane from office. a senate resolution introduced yesterday says there is reasonable cause to put her out of office on the grounds that per suspended law license has made it impossible for her to do the job. kane is facing criminal charges for allegedly leaking secret grand jury material and then lying about it. be sure to tap the nbc 10 app for the updates on the kane decision. now your nbc 10 first alert

weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> we're starting off with some snow falling through the area. that's a live view from malvern. you can see accumulation. it's not a heavy snow but it's a steady snow in malvern. that snow is going to be with us into the commute this morning. making for some slippery conditions as the temperatures have fallen overnight. tracking snow to start with, it will not last all day. a snowy commute, at least the first half. it's already starting to taper off north and west. we have slippery conditions as the temperatures drop below freezing. 26 in mt. pocono, trenton is 31 degrees and 30, just cold enough for sticking in dover where light snow is falling. when you see the train has arrived, be careful as you're walking around, the sidewalks will cover before everything else. the major roads will be just fine. this is really fired up in the last few minutes. in fact, some steady snowfall has cleared berks county, now moving through montgomery county

and it extends into chester county and new castle county in delaware. a snowy start but it won't last all day. we'll get some clouds and drying 9==91ñ 30s this afternoon for allentown, reading and quakertown. and sunshine later this morning and into the afternoon hours. we'll warm temperatures into the upper 30s for norristown, trenton and mount holly. the snow likely not to reach the samore but vineland and dover, dover's already getting snow. vineland, you will see snow during the morning hours. 40 degrees this afternoon. by midmorning, the snow is done in philadelphia, drexel hill and wilmington. sunshine will break through and warm things up today. we're not using the warm term for the rest of week. much colder conditions for the weekend. the seven-day when i come back in ten minutes. we saw that live shot of malvern, the snow coming down. it's accumulating on the steps leeing up to the seven train.

be very careful. >> be careful on the platforms and on your way to work. because of the snow coming down, we're seeing slippery spots, icy conditions. jessica boyington has a look at that. jessica? >> we are highlighting some of the snowy spots right now. this is aramingo avenue around lehigh street, the kensington area. snow is falling down a lot more than it was earlier this morning. that's unfortunate timing with the morning commute just beginning to get under way now. cars still moving along nicely. it's where you'll have to worry about are intersections, side roads, secondary roads and the on and off ramps. this is the new jersey turnpike. speed restrictions at 50 miles an hour. this is from the delaware memorial bridge to exit 14. exit 1 right in here, the snow is falling as well in our cameras. starting to accumulate at least over into the grassy areas and

center median. not a lot of accumulation over on the roadways right now. could be presenting some slippier spots there for drivers. if you're out in new castle, delaware, there is an accident on foulke road, north and southbound atç silverside road. patco, septa, amtrak and new jersey transit running on time this morning. temperatures have dropped a little bit. 29 degrees. in decision 2016, the new hampshire primary did not turn out as chris christie had hoped. >> we're going to take a deep breath, see what the final results are tonight, because that matters. >> we'll take a look at the results and tell you what chris christie is saying about his future. we're following this case against shady and weather the d.a. will file charges.

it's 6:16 and take a look at this live picture. it is a snowy commute in malvern, chester county. the train station there. we've issued a first alert because of the snow. the spread of icy roads as you head out this morning. also be careful onç those sept platforms. they can be slippery. reduced visibility in some areas because the snow is coming down. the list of school delays and our website and app, that list is growing. check the nbc 10 app, also download it free. christians around the world will mark ash wednesday today. this is the beginning of lent which lasts 40 days leading up to easter. christians will have ashes put on their forehead as a sign of sorrow for their sins.

fasting is part of the observationance. cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul will hold four masses today, starting at 7:15 a.m. tmz sports provided us this video of a fight that allegedly involved lesean mccoy, the former eagles running back. this was allegedly over a bottle of champagne. the lawyers say the attack was unprovoked. espn is reporting mccoy has hired defense attorney jack mcmahon to handle the case. nbc 10 spoke to a fan who had his picture taken with mccoy shortly after this incident. >> it looked like shady was, as far as his demeanor and everything, he looked distraught. he was quiet. he didn't say one word to me. >> at this point, mccoy has not been charged or arrested. new information in the battle between the department of justice and the city of ferguson, missouri, over a deal to reform the city's courts and police. council members voted to amend a

proposed settlement between the groups. the justice department says it will take legal action to make sure the city complies. leaders in ferguson say the original agreement was too costly and could bankrupt the city. one of the changes they want is remove a requirement to give police officers and other city workers raises. this is all a result of the shooting death of michael brown. the department of justice study into police department practices. it's 6:18. the water crisis in flint, michigan, could return in criminal charges a[ç serious as involuntary manslaughter. the state's attorney general said those charges could be on the table if government officials were grossly negligent. a switch in the city's drinking water source allowed dangerous levels of contamination. meantime, flint's mayor announced a $55 million proposal to remove the lead piping from the city's water system. it is a bid to fix the water crisis as quickly as possible. the project would start with the high-risk homes with children

under the age of 6 and pregnant women. we just showed you those pictures from malvern, people getting on septa trains there. if you're driving there, it's dicier because of the snow. it's also coming down in delaware. >> first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is watching all the roads. jessica? >> we were trying to look at delaware a few moments ago in dover on route 13, heavy snow or at least heavier snow than earlier this morning starting to accumulate there. also an accident scene in new castle on foulke road, closed north and southbound around silverside road. more parts in delaware we are starting to see that accumulation first. we also have flakes flying around on 422. if you look closely you can see it a little bit around trooper road. an 11-minute drive time. we are starting to slow eastbound to the schuylkill expressway. the westbound side doing better. that's typical for the morning commute, at least right now. the bridges are okay.

but we do have speed restrictions there as they become slippery, faster, commodore barry bridge, betsy and ben down to 35 miles per hour. the walkway is also closed on the ben franklin bridge to pedestrians. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 20 minutes after 6:00. we've seen the situation change since we went on the air at 4:00 this morning. look at the snow coming down. this is the view looking past the battleship new jersey looking towards center city. that's a light snow but it's enough with colder temperatures to produce a dusting in some areas. most areas see less than an rj accumulating on the ground. with temperatures below freezing, slippier conditions. there's the comcast center. you can see the nicely light the winds are not terrible this morning but they will be kicking in. berks county, that steady snow now for maryland, delaware, well into south jersey.

and the steadiest snow is now in southern new castle county, northern new castle county into delaware county. this one line is starting to fall apart. it's moved from berks county into upper montgomery county. just clearing limerick. rain is out of the scenario. there's no mixing. it is all snow and it is sticking. morning snow will be light and then we'll be drying out. it's going to be a breezy day today. look at the temperatures. we see the snow that's falling this morning disappear as the temperatures warm into the upper 30s and low 40s this afternoon. what's on the ground tonight will be stuck tomorrow morning. we'll stay below freezing all day. 24 in the morning, 29 in the afternoon. the wind will be blowing. it's antarctic blast that gives us colder readings for friday morning. down to 17 degrees. another blast of very cold air on saturday and we'll see near record low temperatures send for valentine's day morning. 3 degrees in the morning, 24 in

10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson. it's 6:30. we are in first alert mode. as the snowç falls, our school delay and closure list continues to grow. it's about 100. watch the bottom of the screen or check our nbc 10 app for those schools. let's get to meteorologist bill henley and talk about what's happened in the last hour. >> we've seen rain out of the picture as the temperatures have dropped. it's just snow that's falling from the lehigh valley through philadelphia. and into delaware this morning, with a light accumulation. a dusting in some areas. and you can see it is intensifying in some spots but there's no heavy snow here. it's just enough to produce slippery conditions this morning. you can see upper montgomery into central montgomery county seeing some of that steadier snow. the temperatures have dropped below freezing for philadelphia, wilmington and pottstown. so expect to find slippier spots. the majors should be okay, as jessica boyington has been reporting. 95, you'll encounter snow on the roadways this morning and

flying around there as well. this is around girard avenue. starting to see the slowdown headed southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. our average speeds are in the 30s. tracy? >> 6:33 andjju to decision 2016. we have two new front-runners in the presidential race, republican donald trump and democrat bernie sanders have won the new hampshire primary and both by wide margins. here's the numbers. trump has 35%, john kasich is in second with 16%, ted cruz and jeb bush are battling it out for third place. on the democratic side with 93% of the vote counted, bernie sanders took 60% of the vote, hillary clinton got 39%. nbc 10's george spencer is live in manchester where he's taking a closer look at the outcome of the first in the nation primary. george? >> tracy, neither party's primary was a cliff-hanger. these were decisive wins for both donald trump and for bernie sanders. and while coming in second place

in a campaign of just two candidates for the hillary clinton team was a stinging defeat on the republican side, second place for governor john kasich amounted to something of a win even though he was still some 20 percentage points behind leader donald trump. >> people wanted us to do well but they just weren't sure that we would or that we could. and now by doing as well as we have, i think it's going to have a lot of people wanting to take a seat at the table. >> we are going to make america so great again, maybe greater than ever before. i love you all. thank you, new hampshire. thank you, thank you, new hampshire, thank you. we are going now to south carolina. we're going to win in south carolina. i love you all. thank you very much. thank you. >> and now just like on the republican side for the

democrats, sanders' decisive victory last night is a jolt to the party establishment. >> and this is a message not just to our opponents but to those who support me as well, that we will needç to come together in a few months and unite this party and this nation because the right wing republicans we oppose must not be allowed to gain the presidency. >> now, the clinton campaign quickly conceded defeat here in new hampshire and shifted the campaign's message to the upcoming primaries in south carolina and then moving on through the rest of the country. for the rains, t republicans. even with the second place finish for governor kasich, the rest of the republican field remains muddled this morning.

reporting live in manchester, new hampshire, george spencer, nbc 10 news. months after releasing his immigration plan, donald trump is sharing new details on the wall he plans to build along the u.s./mexico border. in an interview with nbc's tamron hall, trump said the wall would cost around $8 billion. he also repeated his claim that mexico will be fronting the cost of that construction. but did not explain how he would make them pay for it. and new jersey governor chris christie had a disappointing sixth place finish in new hampshire and now he is heading home to the garden state. >> we're going to take a deep breath, see what the final results are tonight, because that matters. >> christie said once he knows what the final vote count is, he'll be able to mick a decision about what's next for him. meanwhile this morning, we spoke with a political science analyst from rutgers camden. she says the picture may look different from the new hampshire results when we get to the next

primary state of south carolina. >> that will give us good information because iowa and new hampshire are disproportionately white, small and often unusual states in the candidates that they vote for. south carolina is a much more representative state. >> south carolina is about a third african-american and the ç could give a better picture of how the country as a whole could go in this race. here's a look at the latest delegate count on the gop side. you need 1,237 total to win the nomination. donald trump is leading with 17 followed by ted cruz with 10, marco rubio has 7 and john kasich has 4. and to the democrats, you need 2,382 delegates to win the nomination. hillary clinton has 394 thanks to endorsements from super delegates, those are party officials who support her. bernie sanders has 42. it's 6:37. 29 degrees in philadelphia. new this morning, a philadelphia

police officer is hurt after traffic stop leads to a foot chase the officer pull over a car at 52nd and baltimore in southwest philadelphia. when the man ran from the car, the officer ran after him. the suspect was caught but the officer hurt his knee. doctors at penn presbyterian medical center are checking him out. abington school board takes action after videos of students fighting in hallways goes viral. >> [ bleep ]. it will be tapering off this morning. slippery conditions as the temperatures have dropped below freezing for much of the area this morning. we will see a warmup. we're starting at 30 degrees in reading, light snow falling in philadelphia and wilmington at 29 degrees with light snow. you can see we've seen a dusting on the roof here at the nbc 10 studios. the treated roads, city avenue, for example, doing just fine but those walkways and side streets, you'll find some snow covering your car this morning,ç may ha to dust it off. the light snow extends into central delaware. wilmington seeing steadier snow, just moved to the east. it's in delaware conte right now. that's steadier snowfall, light in philadelphia. it's going to accumulate less than an inch. most of the area will wind up with a dusting of snow to half an inch. your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast calling for snow to start with. then drying out. quakertown, 35 degrees this afternoon. a bit of snow this morning and sunshine breaking through to warm things up this afternoon.

doylestown, 36 degrees. near 40 for trenton and mount holly. light snow is possible this morning in cape may. otherwise partly cloudy skies this afternoon. vineland and dover warm to near 40 degrees this afternoon. the light snow will be ending in those lockes this morning. westchester, drexel hill, swedesboro, a dusting this morning, breaks of sunshine and it will be melting this afternoon as we warm up nicely later today. but we're talking much colder conditions for the end of the week. and valentine's day may be one of the coldest ever, seven-day forecast when i come back in ten. >> brrr. time to bundle up. dusting, whatever it is, it will make roads slicker. >> jessica boyington is watching the conditions. jessica? >> we are watching cameras in delaware, over in delaware on delaware route 1, the snow it coming down here, starting to

back to dry land today for passengers on board that cruise ship that was caught in rough seas. the royal caribbean ship will be back at cape liberty later today. it ran into hurricane force winds when it sailed straight into the path of a winter storm over the weekend. 30-foot waves shook the ship for more than ten hours. even the captain admits it was a rough trip. >> yesterday turned out to be, probably one of my worst days at sea. >> obviously financial reasons captains, of course, are encouraged to get under way if they can. >> captain joseph alstrom teaches at su in. y maritime college. he says if there was information before the ship's departure that the captain did not act on, there could be consequences. we talked to a passenger from west grove, chester county. >> everything was flying all over the place. we were literally rolling in the

delaware. all the parents traveled out of the country. matt delucia live at philly international with an update on that. >> two cases in pennsylvania, one in delaware, health officials aren't really saying exact locations for these people but the women had traveled outside of the country to the areas impacted by the virus outbreak. those areas are mostly in central and south america. the zika virus is transmitted by mosquitos that can cause birth defects if a pregnant woman is infe infected. there's no public health threat here right now. we are expected to learn more about the delaware case and how they are handling this later today. i tweeted a link from the cdc and how you can protect yourself if you need to travel out of the country. live at philadelphia international airport, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. the new hampshire primary results are now in the books with 93% of the vote counted. bernie sanders is the winner. he got 60% of the vote while hillary clinton took 39%. on the republican side, donald trump won big with 92% of the
