good morning and welcome to first alert forecast. good morning, i'm katy zachry, 6:00 a.m. sunday morning. let's get right to the forecast with first alert bill henley. hi, bill. >> we've been watching this day all day sunday because the weather looks beautiful and still on track for that. a little cold, temperatures in the 30s and 40s. one of the warmer spots is cape may where skies are clear and sunshine just about 30 minutes away. we'll see a lot of that sunshine today, nice glow, twilight, 37 and holding. wind picked up at 13 miles an hour giving a windchill of 29 degrees to start with. the wind will stay with us. wrightstown, pottstown 29, chester county, west town below freeding, chester springs 36 and phoenixville. a cold start but dry one. radar is completely clear.

in virginia who was shot to death during her first day on the job. authorities say a gunman shot ashley guindon and two others officers responding to a domestic dispute. police arrested the suspect who they say is in the military. he's scheduled for court tomorrow on a murder charge. a neighbor describes what happened. >> i was walking up the street with three other people. we heard three to four gunshots so we started running. when we got up here we saw all the cops. we tried to go home but they told us to go inside. >> this was their first day working. the whole thing is tragic. >> officer guindon served in the marine corps before being sworn in as a police officer this past friday. we're working to find the conditions of her two wounded comrades. from our delaware bureau now police are looking for the shooter who left a man for dead

in a parking lot of newcastle complex. they found a man in his 30s shot multiple times in newark last night. we went to the hospital where he later died. police asking anyone with information to contact them. in south jersey, a fire chief recovering from a hark he suffered while fighting a fire in ocean county. crews from several apartments responded to this home. the fire chief larry gillman collapsed at the scene from what turned out to be a heart attack. he was revived and is now recovering at a hospital. >> this year we all know there's an elephant in the room. >> how will the buzz over oscar nominations affect the awards ceremony. a preview of the night still ahead. >> nothing to be ashamed of. we tell the kids, not your

new from overnight, man is recovering after being attacked by a home invasion in west philadelphia. police say the man was inside the apartment in this building on chestnut street around 2:00  a.m. when three men busted through his front door. the man attacked the victim, took his cell phone and wallet. the man was treated at a local hospital for cuts on his face. so far police have made no arrest. in news from overseas now. a cease-fire has brought relative quiet to parts of syria for the first time in years. there have been numerous violations, but the u.n. envoy for syria caused the situation so far quite reassuring. if the situation holds, it will be the first time international negotiations have brought any relief from fighting in syria's five-year civil war. voters in iran and to be favoring more trade and less

isolation. early election results friday point to a vote of confidence for president and pro expansion policies. they cast ballot weeks after the global nuclear deal went into effect. take a look at this, in bluffia, some people who use wheelchairs made a dramatic appeal to the government for better benefits. the protesters want their monthly benefits increased but weeks of protesting have not produced results. so they running their wheelchairs from the underside of a bridge. this morning we have a new look at septa's plan to bring regional rail service to king of prussia. it includes a stop that drops you off right inside the mall. here is the proposed route. it spur off the line to pennsylvania turnpike. the route will include five stops, two at the king of prussia mall, two inside and one out will the project still has a way to go. septa officials will hold a public hearing march 7th to

henley. >> 16 after 6:00. we're 20 minutes away from sunrise. temperatures are still falling right now. usually the coldest time of day is just after sunrise and with very little cloud cover overhead and a breeze, show you temperatures down a little more. philadelphia's 37 right now with steady breeze making you feel like it's in the 20s. pocono mountains freezing, 32 camel back, scattered clouds there. those will clear out. going to be a beautiful day on the slopes with temperatures above freezing through the day. 33 in wilmington. there are some cold spots to start with. a quick warm-up, no sign of any wet weather, though central pennsylvania is seeing a few clouds. can you see them in the harrisburg area, satellite, those clouds moving out and sunshine for the rest of the day. next chance of wet weather is going to come from this system that's moving into the midwest. a little bit of rain in south dakota. doesn't look very impressive but the future cast shows over the

claiming victory in the south carolina democratic primary. clinton said she's running a national campaign. 2016 win over bernie sanders was overwhelming. drew smith with more on her win >> reporter: good morning, out 3-1 margin. polls predicted the win but came away with her strategy for african-americans and women could carry her to the nomination. they went overwhelming for clinton. her opponent said the race isn't over. he expected to lose the paumt state and spent the time flying in the air to texas. hear what he said when he landed. >> sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. tonight we lost. i congratulate secretary clinton on her very strong victory.

we have new information on a rookie police officer who was shot and killed on her first day on the job near washington, d.c. authorities in virginia say a gunman shot officer ashley guindon and two other officers while they were responding to a domestic dispute last night. they arrested the suspect who is in the military. officer guindon served in the marine corps before in as a county police officer on friday. coming up in the next half hour, you'll hear from a witness who was at the scene. now to an nbc 10 exclusive. a heroin user saved and brought back from the brink. only our camera there as medics used narcan to reverse the overdose. narcan the heroin antidote is being used to bring hundreds back to life. randy gyllenhaal takes a closer

look at the drug epidemic sweeping our nation. >> reporter: it's 4:00 p.m. in kensington and septa cop sprints to huntington station. >> what's his name? >> reporter: upstairs a man unconscious on the ground overdosing from heroin. as trains pass by, the victim convulsing on the platform. strangers can only hold his hand. >> scary. >> medic 15 arrives with a lifesaving batch of narcan, the heroin antidote. septa police arrest the man's friend. >> yeah, i was there the whole time trying to wake him up, man. >> reporter: police say he was carrying small baggies of the dangerous drug. >> it's an epidemic. it's a shame. >> reporter: mark watching this unfold, former addict himself, clean for the last year. >> kids go right to heroin and they just drop dead. it's nuts. heroin kills more people than car accidents.

new this morning from overseas, a mining accident kills 36 people in russia. rescuers are among the dead. officials say a methane gas leak triggered three explosions starting on thursday. 80 miners had to be rescued. new from overnight, philadelphia police are looking into two convenience store robberies in the rhawn hurst. one here and the other a few blocks away. a crowbar used by assailant in both. it is unclear at this time if the robberies are connected. we have new information about a stabbing at a philadelphia septa station. these are surveillance pictures of the man police need your help identifying. the victim going into an elevator at the huntington station in kensington early

saturday morning. the man pulled out a knife and demanded money. he stabbed her in the shoulder. she's in the hospital and expected to be okay. investigators said this building tumbled to the ground with one man inside. neighbors helped pull him from the rubble and he's expected to be okay. the city license and inspection said the property did not have open violations. l inform i crews suspect rains and heavy wands may have played a role in the collapse. he's at the hospital and expected to be okay. family and friends will gather to remember cara mccollum, a former miss new jersey. funeral services are scheduled at her hometown in arkansas. a memorial service was held there last night. another memorial scheduled for next month in ocean city in, new jersey.

mccollum was a news anchor. at snj today in millville, cumberland county. she died last monday following a car crash in bad weather. mccollum was girlfriend of our nbc colleague and friend keith jones. last night the miss philadelphia pageant paid tribute to cara. nbc 10 at drexel university's mandel theater. pageant contestants and spectators each asked to bring a book. those will be donated to the birthday book project. >> we're so proud of having her be part of new jersey. we plan on carrying on her birthday book program. >> that program provides brand-new gift wrapped books for kindergarten to 5th grade students for their birthdays. it also promotes the idea that reading is a gift. >> announcer: now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley.
