tv Good Morning America ABC February 16, 2016 7:00am-9:00am EST
you . a winter weather alert coverage continues here at 7. >> 315 schools have been closed and they're controllinga -- scrolling at the bottom of the screen right now. >> and sarah phinney is in kent where the roads are snow- covered and meg shaw in garfield heights and power of five meteorologist somara theodore is tracking the storm. >> and we want to show you storm tracker 5 and the southern part of northeastern ohio, heavy with wet snow covering the highways there. if you have to go out, we have
extra time and we want to you know it took our photographer overnight 45 minutes to go from canton to akron and let's go to somara theodore. she has the answers of folks wanting to know when is it going to end? >> that is a good question. in order to do that, i have to talk about the evolution of the stomp and let's look at -- the storm and let's look at the radar. this is what we're dealing with this morning. this is plaguing much of the eastern seaboard and the direction it's heading away from us. that is the good news and let's zoom in so you can see where the heavier pockets are. about 4, 5 in the morning, we took a beating in akron and canton and that was all due to this snow right here and in parts in buffalo, new york. we're in the whites and dark purple, the lighter snow is falling in northeast ohio and light look at the temperatures as well.
31, wooster and we have been teetering on that freezing line and that means a wet, heavy snow and that brings a cause of concern for ashtabula. temperatures are 29 degrees with a wet snow. you're more likely to see icing occurring and be careful in ashtabula. and as far as the timing goes, we're going to continue through the morning hours and let me switch over. can we pull it up? here we go. and let's switch to the future cast. look at the time stamp in the corner. at 7:00 a.m., we're seeing the heavily concentrated toward the eastern side, which is accurate. the majority of the snow is going to continue to push through and not before lake county, areas like raven a geauga and ashtabula taking a hit. by 3:45 p.m. after lunch, things are starting to litten -- lighten up and we dry out. you have to make it through the critical time, the morning commute and man, i have just been hearing terrible stories out there.
all of those things. how's it looks, corrina? >> reporter: it's been a mess all morning long. it's getting worse. you see a lot of red and yellow into the five on your side traffic map and that is because traffic is moving along slower than normal and this is, affecting you farther south around the akron and canton area and we're getting reports of a jackknifed semi truck, 71 south at royalton and we'll keep an eye on that and keep you updated and want to zoom in on a couple of issues. u.s. 30 in massileop, the state highway patrol -- massillon and reports of as many as 9 vehicles in ditches and we're seeing reports of spinouts and vehicles off of the road says and into the board here. keep that in mind and a reported accident at 77 and 76. take it easy and a lot of
and this is a live look outside from the odot cam and 480 at warrensville center road. major slowdowns, and cars taking it easy for this morning's commute. how is it on the roads? and this is john rudder in storm tracker 5. >> reporter: hey, corrina. we're in downtown akron. for the most part, things are looking good on the city streets and have a look. some wet conditions that we're dealing with on the roads and you can see the snow building up. road crews are here and they're catching up as the snow had a break. on the highways and starting to clear up, the crews had the plows down and i wanted to show you something that we captured also. i was talking to adot a -- odot a few minutes ago and you can see them. they have the plows down and had is called plowing back. they're plowing the shoulder of the highway to get the excess snow on the shoulder and off of the roadway. after the main lanes of travel have been cleared. you can see a couple of trucks are doing that and they have
treating roads and plowing back to make sure the excess no they have does not blow or drift back on to the main lanes of travel and trying to keep things clear for the morning commute and they're looking good in downtown akron. how are they looking for you? >> i'm in geauga county and we're in middle field and the snow is starting to let up now on the moderate side and outside of the burton area. now, the roadways as the light sunrise is starting to peak now and we're seeing more clues -- plows out here and the temperatures are at 29 degrees and what we're going to see is the freeze affect with a lot of snow on the ground. and throughout geauga county one lane. morning.
people have their high beams on and definitely a slow trek here where travelling about 20 miles an hour and the great news just in the last hour here. and we have seen visibility really start to clear up as people are said heading into work or as many of you have the day off now. we're making up for those snow days. still, some very dicey weather if you are out and about travelling. please, please make sure you're taking it slow. back to you. >> thank you, janessa. yes. 300 schools closed now and a lot of superintendents out helping kids and shoveling. there is trouble this morning. side streets in the neighborhood, we have a team of reporters out there covering all of your bases. >> and we want to let you know we called the rta. as of 7:03 a.m., there are no delays if you're using the rta today. let's go to sarah finny in canton.
there and how do the roads look? >> reporter: well, jackie, right now, the roads are looking fine here. take a look. the pavement is visit will, a -- visible. a good sign. when we drove here, at 2:30, it was completely covered and that is good news for those people who are on the roads. it took us an hour and a half to get from downtown cleveland to the football hall of fame, which is where gee are at right now and that -- where we're at right now and these commuters look like they're going at normal speeds, some good news. canton and massillon dispatch said they responded to accidents and disabled vehicles, but nothing too serious. as you can see, the traffic is moving smoothly in this area. if you can get past the slushy mess and the nasty, wet snow, it looks like a bit of winter wonderland out here and that is good news for your tuesday morning. meg, how's it looking in garfield heights? >> i will tell you what, in
roadways here on 480 in garfield heights off of the transportation boulevard. here's a look at 480 east. i mean everybody is moving along just fine. the visibility is getting much better as we go throughout the morning and we're starting at 4:00. we can see one billboard along 480 and i can almost read the second one, great for drivers. and i think right now issue the roads are wet. it was a moderate snow until 6:00 and it lightened up and everyone is moving along okay.
and they're trying to do their jobs. make sure everyone gets to work safely and, again, we're not seeing the snow like we're seeing where sarah finny and john rudder are in canton and if you're heading from south to north, the drive gets easier and much better and we'll keep an eye on the roads and let you know how the morning goes. jackie and terrence? >> thank you. and if you're wondering y we wanted to stay with you. the snow might be improving out there but the problem remains a mess. >> and many schools are cancelled, more than 300 they scrolling at the bottom of the screen and they said that they're under a level one driving advisory. so you're going to want to proceed with caution.
and barberton have park bans in place and put your car somewhere else and so is they can clear the roads for you. >> and the rta is not experiencing any draws. so, somara, everyone wants to know how long is this going to last? >> and taking a look at the future cast models and looking at the rate the storm is moving, it looks like it will be over before lunch and look at canton. the dark the color, the darker the purple and the heavier the snow and akron and canton took a beating and there is a lot of snow and heavy snow. and notice where we're seeing the darker purples and that is in geauga and ashtabula county
pennsylvania and new york and coming down more moderately and mesapo tammyia and seeing -- pesapotemia and it's decreasing in intensity and we saw this, a good deal of snow and that moved up to areas and another thing i wanted to talk about is this wet snow versus dry snow and that matters. in terms of accumulation, you're looking at every five inches of wet snow and that is an inch of water and this is heavier. i want to state the reason i showed concern for areas like ashtabula earlier was because of the temperature there and when we have the wet snow, we have a higher concentration of water in the snow and what does that mean?
freeze. the powdery stuff and ashtabula, normally around 27, 28 degrees and i will monitor the situation and send me your pictures of somara theodore and find me on twitter, facebook and instagram and again, timing on the system. here and lots of red and yellow and nice westbound at west 1 -- 90 westbound at west 122 street and 71 southbound at royalton road and one lane blocked because of this and this is causing major delays on 71 and looking at 30 and we're getting reports from state highway
spot and nine reported cars in ditches here and this is in massillon and another accident blocking the right lane here on 77 and 76. you see the delays that is causing as and just take it slow. this is 77 and state route 271 and lots of slick spots. back to you guys. >> and thank you. we got two more parking bans in. south russell police, the 24 parking ban in affect and the city of ravena in affect until wednesday morning and that is so they can clear the streets for you. >> we'll have more after the
we have extended coverage of the winter weather alert and -- . >> the snow is coming down in places since eleven:00 last night and hitting the southern and eastern parts of the area causing a messy morning ride. we have two storm trackers out patrolling the southern and eastern parts for you and let's head out to john rudder who is patrolling the southern part and how does it look out there? >> it's impressive how much they have improved and it's causing some traffic issues for drivers. i just passed another accident a minute ago on 77 southbound and this is near waterloo road. you can see two vehicles involved in the accident, one into the median and it's still despite the conditions, improving and still some difficult driving conditions that we're dealing with and that snow is picking up. we're seeing the visibility decrease and we're taking it slow here on a 65 miles per hour zone and going about 50
morning commute picks up, we're slowing down as more cars enter the roadway and seeing the slush on the roads and that material odot is putting and activating and melting the snow on the road and a lot of blowing and drifting snow, too with wind gusts and so, things are looking better around here and the storm tracker and janessa webb is in storm tracker this morning. how are things looking for you? >> reporter: things year looking a ton better. i was telling you all that the roadways went from bad to worse and pictures here of plows out towards geauga county. and right now, i am still on a one-lane road and already hazardous. the cars are moving in and out slowly.
untreated roads, you can see they covered with snow and they're getting out here and getting the roadways, better parking lot and they able to get up and get to work. and we have a ton of school closings across the board and it's kind of misty here with a few snowflakes compared to what we were dealing with earlier this morning and that storm system is letting up a bit and some people are taking it slow. terrence, jack? >> and thank you. we have had reporters out in the elements all morning long and with a bird's-eye view. >> and one of the reporters is sarah phinney in canton and you
down anymore and that means it must be rough out there. >> and i want to show you what the roads are looking like in this area. now that it's light out, we can see what drivers are dealing with and that is a lot of slush here. we're seeing the pavement and that is what we saw for hours. the snow was covering the road thickly and we didn't see the light and they tell me there have been a ton of accidents this morning and three lines on hold when i told them and they're responding to a single vehicle accident near canton center and this is tweeting that traffic is moving slowly in the akron area and 124 trucks are out in several counties in this area and in district 4. go slow and take your time. i am sure that is the same thing we're telling people in garfield heights. >> and absolutely. i will see the good thing and
this area all morning long or the surrounding area and that is the great part of this and we're in the prom hours. the good thing, the snow has let up since we have been out here this morning about 4:00 and that is light earned up with visibility and increased visibility since we have been out here and we could not see all three billboards when we got here and who can see three almost and that is great for drivers. odot is doing a great job where we area cleaning and treating then. the trucks yacht out this morning. i mentioned threshold morning
travel at once and if you see two to three trucks in a row, you -- and you're going to get backup and that is because it's getting the road clear and in cleveland and we'll keep an eye on the roads and how they're look here in a bit. back to you guys. >> and thank you. and this is not only affecting others but cleveland hopkins seeing a handful of delays and a handful at akron- canton airport as well. >> and how long is this going to last? and this will end around lunchtime? >> and before lunchtime. i want to show everyone that we're under the winter weather advisory and that is not going to let up until tuesday afternoon and as we head throughout the day, we will
condition through northeast ohio and i. to get into our power of 5 tracking center and go deeper into the neighborhood. and canton and akron, that is one area that hit hard this morning. things are improving there and visibility is still low. we were not battling the visibility from the snowy on fall but reports of fog and this is that look at the broader picture and here i want to show you the areas white and some light snow and in tuscaroras county. how far, you head into ashtabula, geauga and more moderate. we're seeing darker purples there and temperatures are another factor and playing an extremely important role out there and everything was perfectly set up and everything was set up for the type of rain
are to that rain down in pittsburgh and that is the rain- snow line there. and we saw the temperatures barely break freezing. 34 degrees right now in akron and another thing, when we see temperatures that low in ashtabula with the wet snow like this, is that is when we get that threat for icy conditions and i am going to keep an eye on you, ashtabula and light talk timing and you can see it's pushing more towards the east and that is accurate. and we push through a time here and that is not until after lunchtime where things quiet down and we see a few flurries lingering.
this system making it critical and we urge the commute is treacherous. >> and the roads have been a mess all loring -- morning long and that is the case where we saw sarah phinney live a moment ago around the akron-canton area and major slowdowns on the major roadways and we're getting reports of an accident on 90 westbound at 117th street and light talk about issues and accidents. wants of a jackknifed semi in the area of 71 southbound at royalton road and you can see the red there and the delays this is causing for you on 71 and 9 cars in ditches and in the massillon area and mile marker 10 around there and keep that in mind. another accident is blocking the lane and and everyone and
and this is focused around the akron-canton area and route 8 northbound we're getting reports of at least two accidents right now and and everyone is a headache with multiple reports of accidents and spinouts all morning long and take you outside for a live look from the odot cam and this is showing us 77 at state route 261 and sustain a major impact on traffic and the weather causing delays and slick roads out there. terrence and jackie. >> and thank you. >> we have two storm trackers out in the southern and eastern parts of the area and light go to john rudder. >> reporter: and we heard corrina mention 77 southbound in terms of problems this morning. have a look outside. andtra of course is moving smoothly and road conditions
a lot of slush that we're seeing on the roadways and sins that snow melted in the -- and since the snow melted in the slushy material, we're seeing issues with visibility. the snow is picked up a bit is any reduced on ur visibility probably only down to a couple hundred yards or so and we have seen probably as many as a dozen cars off of the road and mostly south here and further south toward canton, massile son and into that southern part of the viewing area and a dozen cars aught of -- off of the roadway and we're here in full force and janessa webb and are things looking for you? >> a different story here and the last four hours and to to 528, not seeing any accidents and this is a slow go and seeing people with the
now, the weather is starting to die down. it's pretty misty out here and still the visibility is low and to the left at odot truck and that is starting to pick up here and getting out. treating the back roads and that can be very slick at times and you're seeing the beauty of the snow that we accumulated over the last hour and enjoying
>> and use your kids to help you. >> and 300 schools almost and plenty of children out there and raven a plain township and cuyahoga falls. the city plows need to clear the roads for you. >> and we want to let you know level one driving advisory from wayne county and we'll continue to update you on all of the weather conditions and accidentings, what you need to avoid on newsnet5.com and there is a live blog on the website. >> and we'll have another update at 7,, another weather update and traffic as well. >> thank you for joining us.
