(somber music) when i got out of the service i was sort of on a downhill pathway. i was a paratrooper, which exacts a pretty significant toll on the body. i had several different injuries. i'd been in a few vehicle accidents. i made some bad choices about exercise and i made some bad choices about eating and i gained weight, and my weight made some of my injuries worse. i had a surgery, things did not go well to the point where they told me i would need to lose weight if i wanted to have

another surgery. and i didn't really see how i could lose the weight. i couldn't work out. it's not like i can run. i was too heavy. i have hated things in my life but i don't think i hated anything as much as i hated those braces and those crutches. i was in excruciating pain almost constantly. that was about as low as it got for me. i had totally given up. ♪ (male #2) he sent me those first two pictures with the knee braces and the back brace the canes, and his belly was out to here. and i was thinking, "god how am i gonna help that guy?" (arthur) i started off doing ddp yoga on crutches with the chair with straps, with blocks with anything i could find to help me. ♪ i fell down a lot. ♪ i have lost so much weight

that if i don't hold these up they'll fall and i'm not gonna do that right now. but, uh... i'm really pleased with this. i lost just under 40 pounds in the first month. i was feeling so much better. i was moving better. after awhile it got to a point where everybody was noticing. that felt awesome. (bright music) i could not afford to fail. i was not going to send that message to my wife and kids. ♪ here's where i'm at now. ♪ just because i can't do it today, doesn't mean i'm not gonna be able to do it some day. i lost 140 pounds doing ddp yoga. i've taken over 20 inches off my waist.

your quads have to be engaged here. now, pick your toes up and grip them into the mat. now, your feet and your calves have to be engaged. now stand tall pull those legs together really work that muscle in the middle, that adductor muscle. now tuck your tailbone and squeeze your glutes. two of the biggest muscles in your body your quads and your glutes. that's what we're doing here engaging muscles. now bring your thumb and index fingers together. keep your fingers apart and push. don't let me pull them apart. push your thumb and your index fingers together. look what happens to his forearm his bicep, his pectoral muscles they all have to engage, that's what we're doing here. we're engaging muscles. now, take your arms to the sky do this at home! create that resistance bring your arms out to a "t," clench those fists tight and let me hear you. hulk it out. that's right, baby. attention! shoulders back, chest out. at ease. look what's happened to their heart rate. they're all up like 40, 50 beats. one more time, flex your quads, flex your glutes reach out and grab the ball, open those fingers wide, take your arms high.
