9:31 am
because you can see here on the storm time line that shading of purple independent indicating where the snow is. that shoves the moisture offshore as we work toward later this afternoon. and certainly by this evening winds down. how much snow do you have to shovel and plow? i would say 5 to 8 inch of snow by the time it's all said and done. as you work north of route 2 corridor. this is heavy wet packing snow. also good for making snow men as well as perhaps snowball fights be kind to your neighbor. further south 4 to 5 inch of snow south coast then you rain drops and sleet and then the wet snow toward chathem. >> you start letting the kids have snow ball fight and they will complain to mom and there goes your quiet time inside the house as a kids play outside. frame ingham 3 and a half inch. greenfield picking up three so far.
9:32 am
and this is wet heavy stuff. a lot of towns are already reporting between 2-3 inch of snow. closing in on three. lexington about an inch and a half. you heard kris anderson report close to three on the grassy surfaces. one in the cement. that's going to be difference too. how much snow you get depends on whether you measure on the furniture of the patio furniture or the deck or you measuring on the driveway. probably 2-3 inch gap between the two the driveway has the warmth to it. it's a very heavy wet slushy snow to push around. the wind out of the north. 10 to 15 miles per hour. from plymouth to boston through worcester. look at the gusts hyannis at 44. 45-mile-an-hour gust in nantucket. you combined gusty wind with heavy wet snow on the tree branches right now and nay will start snapping here.
9:33 am
five to 8 inch of wet snow. i expect some power outages because of downed tree limbs. we will keep an eye into this afternoon. the good news the quick hitting storm. mid-to-late afternoon. the storm tapers off it dries out overnight tonight and the weekend forecast looks good more on that forecast coming up. >> thanks. let's get a look at the conditions more now with marshall hook in our traffic tracker. hey, marshall. >> we are here on 95 in kanton. you can see the snowplows are doing their work right in front of us right now. plenty of snow off to the side and j.r. both kris and john and nicole all pointed out it's great for snowball. i expect a snowball fight later on. the roadways no snowballs from there as you see down to wet pavement. that's the way on most major highways.
9:34 am
dicey and surface roads as well. as far as we go for the big traffic picture danielle gursh to tell us about that. thanks, marshall. good morning, everyone. let's head outside and take a look. here's the expressway. the snow coming down but not looking as bad as it was a few minutes ago. let's go to the maps north of town. a couple of incidentings to tell you about. we have an accident and vehicle that spun out. this spin out in woburn on 93 southbound. then this is lowell this accident on the lowell connector out bound right at route 3. your drive on 93 into boston is slow. on the expressway northbound we have a disabled vehicle and that's right at granite avenue. south of town this accident in hingham has cleared. that's good news. the pike not looking too bad. let's look at the drive times if you get ready to head out the door this morning. 11 minutes on the expressway. 13 minutes into town on the pike from 128, and 93 southbound. 128 to zakim bridge.
9:35 am
give yourself more time than this. be careful. if you take the t so far it's on time. back to you guys. seems like we're getting into the thick of it. let's head outside and show you what you will encounter this morning. our storm force coverage takes us to worcester where john cocoa has been watching the snow fall all morning long. it's really coming down in worcester. accumulating since 7:00 this morning. i want to show you here the roads. that's really the big concern right now. most people have been coming through here fairly slowly. i say most people. but most people have been coming through here fairly slowly. i want to show you here plows have been trying to clear this out. you can take a look here. plow just came through here couple of minutes ago. we have some steady accumulation out here on the road. just from marshall hook i want to reitrate this is a heavy wet snow. the kind of snow you can build snowballs with. maybe a snowman. we've been seeing this sort of accumulate on the road since 7:00 this morning.
9:36 am
here. but you can see here this is kind of sticking together. that's what it is like. that's for people driving on out here in worcester. live in worcester. 7news "today in new england." storm started kind of as rain overnight. and then the temperatures dropped and of course we've got the snow that it switched over to right now. it's been quite a wintery scene. >> causing problems depending where you are. let's head out to nicole oliverio live in foxboro. how is it looking there now, nicole? >> the snow coming down consistently. smaller flakes but take a look on the ground. the parts of the roads that aren't treated yet. we probably have seen close to 3 inches in foxboro. it's easy to move now. it's definitely still sticking to roadways. as i step out of the way the plows have been doing their job trying to come through. because the snow start during rush hour a lot of car have been on the road. it sort of still leaving that mess that you see on the roads. you can see that's it's sticking to the trees and the branches here.
9:37 am
with here all day. but the good news since this is first snow, the first week into february. really, there are no snowbanks. the roads are clear. it should be easier to get around. as j.r. said if you don't have to go anywhere it's best to stay indoors. for now live in foxboro. nicole oliverio. 7news "today in new england." let's head out now to lexington. snow really coming down where you are, kris? >> it's hard to believe my son wore short to school two days ago. now they are sitting home for the snow day. hopefully plowing the driveway. 128 in lexington. the traffic continues to move smoothly north and southbound. that's a good news. the slushy met accumulating up on the roadways. it is causing a lot of the driver to slowdown.
9:38 am
traffic, it's gradually decreased as the rush hour came this morning and is progressed on to the 9:00 hour to 9:30 now. we don't have the volume. it's helping to keep any incident backup or delays. i want to give you a quick look as far as what we look alternate consistency with snow. it's that slushy mess. it's beautiful to make snowball and snowmen again like everyone says. the problem when it mixes with grime on the roadways makes it slushier and causes you to slip and slide. when you are out on the roadway give yourself plenty of extra time. that's the latest along 128 here live in lexington. kris anderson, 7news "today in new england." glad he mentioned his kid with the short. my son asked the same thing. it's like we're out of practice. we'll continue to track this latest round of winter weather we have. our team of meteorologist keeping a close eye on the storm.

>> welcome back. 9:45. we're in storm force mode. a live look outside of the traffic tracker. looks like the roads are pretty clear this morning. the good news it's been so warm this week that a lot of the warmth is eating up the snow as j.r. said.
9:42 am
it looks pretty on the trees. but j.r. we get report that some people say branches are coming down because of that. that's the issue moving forward. we talked about that extensively. because of the weight of snow coming down on trees and power lines. beautiful scene if you are out there. this women sent a picture from twitter walking the dogs and again that is nice morning for a walk in the snow. if you are travelling by car am lou extra time. because it's heavy wet snow. that's usually creates more of a problem when driving on it verses a dry powdery snow. when the tire going over with wet snow it creates a thin film of water which almost sets up like a skating rink effect for the cared on the roadway. here's where we have the rain on the cape. there's that rain snow line trying to make inroads into the cape. that warm air will fight like
9:43 am
eventually the cold air will win out there. storm system to the east of new england over the next several hours. and we will have the bands of snow marching through temp in the lower 30. if they were in the teens and 20s snow will be stacking up real fast like flat jacks. it's a slow process. because its so warm this week if it doesn't snow hard enough to overwhelming the roadways then the roads holding on to wet warmth there is. either way with some of the snow. you come off the main road and it's a different story. sidewalks and driveways and patio furniture. that's accumulating snow. storm time line indicating the snow is with us for about another five or six hours then as we work into the afternoon hour between 3:00 and 5:00, 3:00 p.m. worcester hills 5:00 p.m. city of boston. that's when the snow will shutdown. and the amount of snow on the way. 5 to 8 inches of snow.
9:44 am
