accumulating snow near the end of the evening commute. winter weather advisory in effect essentially along 95 west out through worcester county into fitchburg there. it's a cold start this morning. seasonably cold. the sunshine we had earlier this morning fading out as the moisture advances from the mid atlantic. there's not a ton of cold air with this storm system. it's mainly rain now through the mid atlantic. as it works north some patchy light snow and flurries. burst of snow between 7:00 and 11:00 and then it goes over to mixed precipitation and rain. rain first at the coastline. some sleet and some freezing rain inland. 1-3 inch of snow inland. coating to an inch close to coastline. best chance for 2s and 3s higher terrain through core wester into southwestern new hampshire. forecast. again the best chance for any slippery spots not until after

a lot of that would occur inland where you get the steadier burst of snow. along the coastline temperature above freezing into this evening. and then we track rain and wind all the way into thursday morning more on that 7-day forecast ahead. time now for fast track traffic here's danielle gersh. this the slow drive. i want to go to maps and update you on situation on route 9. now, earlier route 9 was closed in newton and eastbound on route 9 near deadly road. the right lane is still closed. accident. traffic is here the backed up to route 16 on the expressway from braintree into boston. that drive right now still over half an hour. heading into town on route 3 you're slow through weymouth. a little bit of slowing on route as well. 93 southbound great 495 to 128 looking good. but after you crossover 128 you're crawling through woburn

route one looking good until you start to hit into summerville. let's look at the drive times if you get ready to head tout door this morning. into boston. into town on the pike from 128. 25 minutes. if you take the t this morning we have delays on the fairmount and franklin lines. an all clear has been declared at maynard high school after they received a bomb threat. students were told to stay out of the high school and report to fowler middle school. police and fire assessed the situation and determined it's safe to resume classes. know to a zajs situation for actualsburg family when their hover board goes up in flame. it's the latest fire for the popular toys. it happened after some officials announced the hover boards are way too dangerous to be riding them. let's head out to victoria

just spoke with the name. and 11-year-old boy was using the hover board. his son heard a loud pop and the next thing they know flames were shooting waist high. a boy was on this hover board when the family said it suddenly caught fire inside their home. through out some sparks. the child jumped off. the 11-year-old boy is okay. his older sister said the family can't believe it happened. the rug started to catch fire. so they quickly called 911. there was quite a bit of smoke. luckily the fire small enough that firefighter used an extinguisher to put it out. others have been been as fortunate. a tennessee family said that horer board for their mansion burning down and two teen-agers forced to jump out of a window. >> shopper got scared in the

boom and then seeing the toy on fire. the damage here in chumgsford not that extensive but still enough to force the family from the home for the night. the smoke from hover board. it smelled pretty bad, the plastic. had he really thought it could happen he wouldn't have allowed him. it was a christmas gift. the rug has to be replaced and portions of the home will have to be professionally cleaned to get rid of the smoke smell. victoria warren. 7news "today in new england." a boy appears to be okay after he was found wondering alone in dorchester. boston emf said the boy who 4-year-old was walking along blue hill avenue after 3:00 this morning. he was taken to boston medical center to be checked out. happening now a cambridge police officer is under investigation by his own

after he allegedly involved in hit-and-run. let's head out live to cambridge with the latest. we have brandon gunnoe working the story today. that officer is off the job now. while multiple agencies investigate exactly what happened here. this is busy intersection a police say an off-duty officer hit a young women who was riding her bicycle and then he took off. >> we respond to area of broadway and portland. you're listening to traffic on a police say an off duty officer hit a young women on a bicycle and never stopped. >> it happened sunday night just before 8:00. she was riding her bike near broadway and portland street in cambridge when she was hit by a pickup truck. it had extended cab on the back. >> the woman was hurt and was rushed to the hospital but her injury are not life threatening. cambridge police confirm the off

bombers. now hollywood producer want to shoot a movie location managers for the film patriot's day have reportedly asked people wholy on laurel street to allow them to re-create the gun battle between officers and the tsarnaev brothers. according to a watertown community blog site crews sent out these fliers letting residents know that filming would happen at night and would begin in early may be preparations set to start in late april just after the third anniversary of the bombing and manhunt. patriot's day stars boston native mark wahlberg cast as boston officer in command at the finish line when the bombings went off in 2013. when dzhokhar tsarnaev was sentenced to death last may some people along laurel street could point to bullet holes in their home. many said with the case closed

a few hours later they also said jaqueline murphy inside the car and arrested her on several car car -- warrants. she's due in court. they believe he's the same man that assaulted an officer with needle and led police on thursday that left an officer crashing into a poll in chelsea. the officer is seriously injured but expected to make full recovery. we have new details on the deadly shooting spree in michigan. uber said driver charged with killing 6 people had been driving for them less than a month. they gave him good rating. prosecutors say he admitted now to carrying out the random attacks and continue to give rides after the first shooting. he's being held without bail now. turning to race for the white house. the g.o.p. candidate shook things up on campaign yesterday. just before today caucuses in nevada. while a democratic made his way

welcome back. 9:15. we have winter weather headed our way. seems like winter the trying. it hasn't reached the stage we were at this time last year. which is okay. really it seems like it's giving it its all. >> it's a long ways away. once in a while it comes in stages. maybe two days then pulls back and we enjoy mild temperatures again. we haven't had sustained cold or snow. colder start this morning. seasonably cold and seasonable

temperature close to 40 this afternoon. any filtered sunshine continues to fade out. here's the winter weather that we will be tracking. it's mainly rain across the mid atlantic but as it bumps into cold air, cold enough air across southern new england will transition to period of snow. we'll call late flurry and patchy light snow. temps in up thor 30s to near 40. along the coastline temperature rising tonight into the upper 30s inland i think will hold close to 30 as the evening snow goes over to mixed precipitation and eventually rain and freezing rain after midnight. in terms of the timing of it again. patchy light snow and flurry a possibility between four and seven. better chance of steadier snow after 7:00. i think the window for steadier snow near the coastline is briefly this evening then you flip over to rain along the coastline although we may linger snow and itself. merrimack valley into southern

tomorrow morning commute 6:00 a.m. here. this is mainly a rain event inside 495. there could be patchy freezing drizzle freezing rain left over across northern worcester county. that should be about it into interior southern new hampshire. not a big storm for us. coating to an inch across eastern mass. through worcester counts, 1s, 2s i'm and 3s. i think a lot of us inside 495 will be in that coating to one. maybe 1 and a half range between 95 and 495. icy glaze of freezing rain a possibility for a little while overnight between 11:00 and 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. then i think this area will shrink as we get into the morning commute. overall travel conditions today even if you have snowflakes here by 6:00 p.m. it will melt on contact on the road. burst of snow steadier at times i think we could get that reduced visibility and reduced road conditions here later on

and midnight. here's a secondary area of low pressure that we have to track in here. this will work in as we get into wednesday into thursday morning this will bring downpours and gusty winds in here by thursday morning. i will have to keep an eye on that. heaviest of the rain will fall tomorrow late in the day tomorrow night and into thursday morning itself. 1-2 inches of rain in the strongest winds gusting 50-plus miles per hour will arrive on thursday morning. for more on this storm and what's going on across the rest of the country and the mild air this will bring in over to danielle. you mentioned the second system that we're watching now from houston to oklahoma city and into dallas. and this system will bring the threat for severe weather to much of the deep south today. and even there's a chance for some winds damaging hail, tornadoes as we head into tonight from that system. i think these are frozen here.

where the highest risk for tornadoes will be today. that will strechl into southern mississippi and back alabama. as this system starts to work up the east coast it will start to bring in milder air for us. as we head into wednesday night in. and then overnight wednesday into thursday look at all this mild air that arrives with this system temperatures thursday into the mid and upper 50s. but this warmer air is not sticking around for too long. it will cool down for the weekend. for more on that back to you. we can manage the 40s. as 50s will leave us as they come in with strong gusty wind and downpours in the morning. we'll go back to the quieter weather here friday, saturday and sunday overall good into the week. dreary day tomorrow. temperatures in the 30s to near 40 degrees with occasional showers and areas of drizzle

a dangerous scene when this bus goes up many smoke just a burned out shell left behind. passengers could only look on as the flames took over. by time fire crews got there it was too late to save anything. here's adam williams. a gutted shell is all that's left of passenger bus. when i heard the first boom i was in the bathroom. i came out to a lot of smoke. i could hardly get out of bus. it was full of black smoke. all 40 passengers and the drive managed to get off safely before the bus burst into large flame. i was walking down the highway. the bus ungulfed when firefighter arrived on the scene just north of chicago, illinois. this cell phone video capturing the plume of smoke and these photographs showing just how intense the fire was the flame destroying everything onboard. >> i lost everything. me social security card. all my clothe. the bus travelling from chicago to minneapolis.

we need the moisture to get thrown up into southern new today. talk about few flurries or patches of light snow. i don't expect problems on the roadway at this time. could have steadier burst after 7:00 close to midnight tonight. that would be the window before changing over to mixed precipitation of some sleet, freezing rain and rain and over to rain. coating to an in. you get into worcester county where you best chance of 2s and 3s will show up into southern new hampshire as well. west of nashua. we'll keep an eye on that forecast we'll also keep an eye on the temperatures because later on today it will be well above the freezing mark if not close to 40 degrees. those initial first snowflakes melting on contact. en as we get into the midevening hours we will close to freezing inland. inland you will have more concerns on the roadway this evening than you would across eastern mass near the 95 stretch. by tomorrow morning we're 40 degrees in the city of boston.

freezing rain into southern new hampshire but predominantly wet weather on wednesday. and soaking rain wednesday night into thursday morning. more on that ahead. this morning a chumsford family has some cleaning up to do after a fire disaster. let's go to victoria warren on the scene with the latest. vicki? >> i spoke with the family and they say it was terrifying situation for this 11-year-old boy. he heard a boom and the next thing everyone know there were flame waste high. we have pictures of the damage and what is left of what was his hover board. it was a christmas gift. it completely burned. the boy jumped off the board, grabbed the family dog and he and his sister they were able to use a firicsing the combicher.

damage to the rug. the rug going to have to be replaced. hindsight the "20/20." he heard the news story didn't believe this could actually happen to his child. but if he knew now two days ago what he knows now he never would have allowed his son to continue using that hover board. they are thankful everybody is okay. victoria warren 7news "today in new england." police search for two armed robbers. surveillance video shows them forcing three employee into a walk-in cooler. this happen late sunday night after the restaurant closed. plates say the robber waited for employee to take out the trash before they went inside. they stole around $300 from that office. friend coming together to say good-bye to 15-year-old stabbed in dorchester. another teenager attacked him. he later died at the hospital.

around the spot where he was stabbed. he left a positive impact. he did not deserve this at all. he was a good kid. the 16-year-old accuse of stabbing hopkins went before a judge yesterday. but hid his face from the cameras. h attack a victim after faith broke out. he's held without bail. new details about overtime pay for mbta worker. an audit shows that one work increased his pay significantly last year all because he approved his own overtime hours. this review shows the man earned more than 200 overtime hours last year. and earned nearly 330,000. despite the maintenance formen approving his own official said there's noers of appropriate contact. the mbta said the man retired

we had to somethings quickly. include getting the driver back up to roadway. police say crashes on this stretch of roadway are notoriously bad. >> there's not much in the way of shoulder or center median. there's no work for people to go. in this case the initial crash involved two dark car and happened before dawn which meant oncoming driver likely couldn't see the vehicle involved. as for the cause. there doesn't appear to be alcohol or drugs involved. just a matter speed and inattention. >> police say the 58-year-old driver of the moving truck suffered a broken leg and burns and four other people had minor injury. happening today president obama's plan to shutdown guantanamo bay will submitted to congress. today is deadline to submit the proposal. the administration hopes lawmakers will allow nearly 60 detainees to be moved to a

outside. 32 right now in boston. here's the moisture working up the coastline. now not a powerful storm but doesn't have decent shot of moisture that has to work just cold enough air in here across southern new england to provide late-day flurries and snow showers. eventually watching that go to steadier burst of some snow. after 7:00 through 11:00 midnight and you notice what anned along the coastline. this may indeed be a brief rain. cold air holds on longest to southwestern 1/21/2 that's where you have a little bit of snow and you will get a few sleet pellets into the air and pockets of freezing rain. the morning commute near and inside 495 plain old shower. outside 495 southwestern new

of freezing rain out there. your best chance for slippery spots tomorrow morning north and west of 495 and best chance for 2-3 inch of snow through worcester county into the western half of new hampshire. i think it's a coating to an inch for a lot of us across eastern mass. this will not amount to much. temperatures above the freezing mark. even when it is snowing. 495 worcester county. certainly a possibility. this isn't going to be like a big ice storm. they be slick spots. i'm not really concerns with power outages because not enough of that ice that will accumulate to really weigh down the tree branches and power lines. there may be few hours more travel. i think we're okay to 6:00 or 7:00 tonight. here's another storm that we're tracking this one back through dallas, texas right now. that will work up the ohio valley. that one will bring us more rain.
