today the republican candidates are back out on the actual campaign trail after taking their message to the airwaves last night. it was an evening of dueling republican events on the cable networks last night. the main event was the republican debate at the iowa events center. at the same time donald trump held his own event at drake university ... raising money for veterans charities. trump may not have been at the debate ... but he wasn't forgotten by his fellow republicans. 43-55 "i'm a maniac and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat, and ugly. and ben, you're a terrible surgeon. now that we've gotten the donald trump portion out of the way..."100-108 ""i kind of miss donald trump. he was a little teddy bear to me. we always had such a loving relationship in these debates and in between and the tweets. i kind of miss him. i wish he was here." this morning trump took his campaign to new hampshire and returned fire ... 133-151 "and cruz is in second place, he got really pummeled
4:02 pm
wasn't there.. he got pummeled. wow. and you know they didn't even mention that he was born in canada right? you know. when you're born in canada you're not supposed to be running for president of the united states. prime minister of canada, no problem." speaking of his own event at drake university, trump says he raised six million dollars for veterans charities. a big chunk of that is going to the group "puppy jake foundation" that trains companion dogs. trump then told the new hampshire crowd that he could give up campaigning right now and still win the republican nomination ... but he'll stay on the campaign trail anyway. "we have the most loyal people and the polls have said that. in fact, you ever notice when they say who's going to stick no matter what, trump 69 percent, other guys like 9 percent. so when they go, i mean i have people, these are my people. and by the way, the 69, and then who's probably going to stick, i'm into the nineties ok. in other words, i don't even think i have to campaign anymore. why am i even

campaign. i could leave here right now, they're going to vote for me." trump will return to iowa tomorrow and remain here through caucus night. florida senator marco rubio began his day in burlington in eastern iowa. rubio made his final pitch... saying no matter where you stand on the issues you should stand with him because he is the only republican who can win next november. 11-39 "today i'm here, three for me on monday night. number one because i will unite this party. we have our differences, but we cannot win unless we are left running that, at the end of this nomination process, can unite this party. we cannot win if we're divided and the sooner we can unite at the end of this contest, the better off we're going to be in terms of winning." rubio says hillary clinton and

republican nominee. senator rand paul started his day today in knoxville. he is wrapping up his campaign here by warning iowans what giving donald trump their vote could really mean. "i think people are frustrated with washington and so am i and in their frustration they're looking for an easy way out and right now donald trump is the easy way out, give him the power and he will fix things but there is also a long standing tradition in our country going all the way back to our founding fathers that worries about one person getting too much power, so i worry about a donald trump accumulating so much power that it would be used to take away our freedoms, i'm a big believer that the constitution was put in place to keep in check power, i think it's a foreign tradition to donald trump but should be very important to iowa voters because anytime you let power get carried away, there's always the chance we'll lose our freedoms in the process." paul says his caucus hopes could depend on him winning over

inspiring them to caucus for the first time. new jersey governor chris ride his "strong" debate performance into the iowa caucuses monday. 9:13:15 "i felt really good felt good most the questions we were asked. and what drives me crazy about those things is that people get up on stage, they don't like the question they were asked and they think that you're really not listening and think you're at home distracted by the potato chips, or a phone call, and they don't realize that you listen, the people in iowa listen." :01-:27 christie hosted a send-off rally at his campaign headquarters in johnston this morning. he says he'll do better in the iowa caucuses than people think because of his campaign efforts. christie says between today and

corner of the state. 9:16:12 "so when i sit in the chair of the oval office for the first time in january 2017, i won't spin around in the chair and say, 'gee wiz isn't it good i'm president?' it will feel familiar, it will feel like the one i'm in right now. just a little bigger, and a little more decision- making process." :01-:20 christie is participating in the state today. fellow republican challenger ben carson also thinks he had strong debate performance. today he sat down with our dave price to explain his comments on controlling vladimir putin. 2818-3225 talk about the debate experience ... even though i didn't have very much time to speak ... one of things that disturbs me the most is that the current generation is the first one expected to do worse than their parents ... easier one of the comments you made last night ... you said putin is a one horse country ... by keeping oil prices low it keeps his expansion ... people in texas are worried ... american ingenuity that's the answer to
4:07 pm
we need to be looking for alternative energy sources .... imagine what would would happen to funding for terrorism. should we intentionally hold down oil prices to starve out putin? ... that would put a great deal of pressure on putin ... basically limiting a great deal of his influence ... doing that in a very proactive way. like the rest of the republican field, sanders is promising to

it will be a family affair in iowa through monday night for the clintons as she, former president bill clinton and their daughter chelsea campaign together and separately. this morning she took a softer approach to winning over voters instead of attacking rival bernie sanders all of you who have decided to go caucus for me, i thank you. those of you who are still shopping, trying to make up your minds, i hope i can persuade you. all three clintons will appear together on the campaign trail over the weekend. bernie sanders is looking to because this year's barack obama on monday night. this morning sanders reminded a crowd in mount pleasant how far the characterizations of his campaign and himself have come in a few months ... and how close his supporters are to ensuring a victory here. one of the criticism being thrown at me is "bernie sanders nice guy, combs his hair very well, great dresser,

there is time for rest and grandchildren. a nation that defends our people and our values, but no longer carries so much of that burden alone. i know we can create that america if we listen to our hearts. and that journey begins here in iowa. i'm bernie sanders. i approve this message, and i ask you to join with us at the caucuses on monday night. thank you.
