tonight --- top democratic presidential contenders square off in charleston for the 4th democratic debate. we have team coverage with will whitson and charles molineaux. we start with charles. this is the first debate of the new year and the last before the iowa caucuses, now just two weeks away tonight's forum is hosted by nbc youtube and the congressional black caucus. the intensity of this campaign has picked up with the latest polls showing bernie sanders closing the gap with the front runner hillary clinton in iowa. statistically they're in a dead heat in iowa and, ahead of the new hampshire primary, sanders is leading in new

his home state of vermont. the debates have also featured strong performances by o'malley although he remains a distant third in the polls. as this campaign has tightened up, sure enough, the contenders have sharpened up their language with each other, which is a big change from what we've seen in the previoususebates with sanders generally avoiding any harsh attacks. listen to what one expert thinks tonight will be like. thanks, charles. will whitson has more now on what the

caucus and primary voters. expect sparks to fly, and attacks to be intents from both bernie sanders and martin o'malley tonight during the nbc news youtube debate- hillary clinton- who has been the frontrunner in the democratic race since the start, has been losing ground in iowa- so she will be putting up a strong defense. in the past few days, we've seen polls in iowa narrow, with but, democratic party officials say they were expecting this race to get close. "we always expected, we have three very good candidates running for the office of the presidency- so we always expected some tightening to take place as we got closer to the actual vote." in the gop debate, we saw a lot of talk about repealing the affordable care act- harrison says we can expect tonight to hear how the democratic candidates will protect it- as well as talking points on the economy, foreign policy, and national defense. live here in charleston- will whitson, back to you. and of course, you can watch the

we're working to learn more about a crash overnight in orangeburg that killed a child. troopers say around 3:15 this morning, two cars crashed head-on on highway 3 near springfield. the drivers and passengers of

the crash were taken to the hospital. a child was pronounced dead. the crash is still under investigation. one man is dead after a single vehicle wreck in lexington county. it happened around 3 o'clock this morning on sc highway 302. highway patrol troopers say the driver ran off the side of the road, hit a guide wire and rolling over several times. the driver was ejected. troopers say the victim was not wearing a seatbelt. the panthers roar to victory in the playoffs. carolina sends the two- time nfc champs packing -- as the panthers beat the seattle seahawks at home. sports director rick henry has more on the big win from the queen city. the carolina panthers are just one win away from advancing to the super bowl. the cats were very impressive today as they mauled the seattle seahawks to advance to the nfc championship game. the panthers set the tone early... first play from scrimmage...jonathan stewart rips off a 59 yd run to the seattle 16 yd line.

disaster for the seahawks. luke kuechly intercepts russell wilson's pass and returns it 14 yards to make it 14-nothing after less than three and a half minutes of action. the panthers keep pounding....cam newton connects with greg olsen for a 19 yard td....panthers up 31- nothing at the half...they go on to eliminate the s shawks 31 to 24. "they are a good football team and they showed that in the second half. we were able to hold on and come away with the victory. a major milestone. sato japanese steakhouse was one of several shops in forest acres heavily damaged by the october flood. now, after tremendous support, the restaurant is back on its feet. wis' mike desumma has the story from our newsroom. mike. meaghan, like many small businesses, the staff at sato's are pretty close knit. management says those very ties play a big role -- on thth restaurant's road to reopen. "i'm here it's almost ten years right now." "flower...first everywhere." for more than a decade --- young kim says she's found, owning a successful restaurant -- takes one key ingredient. "i have the dream if i run business restaurant how can i do? the loyalty and happiness of a working staff. "if they make money? good! i'm

that's why, since taking over sato japense steakhouse back in 2006 --- many of her longtime employees are still here. 'she comes to our children's birthday parties...our kids go to church with her." "so it is like a real serious family here." a family that just months ago --- faced a massive challenge together. "a lot of water aallll over restaurant." last fall sato became another business in forest acres with devastating flood damage. a creek bed in back of the store topped its banks --- sending water throughout the restaurant. wrecking everything it touched. "she had to pretty much kind of start all over again." kim says she also had to face the rough news that her business no longer had flood insurance. while contractors stepped in to handle major repairs. "fast work...we got open soon." kim's staff --- who, at that point, wasn't earning a paycheck --- stepped in to do the rest. "we did the painting the cleaning...we all did it
