you among them, you don't need to. >> working out is important. >> i just lost 20 pounds. >> the magic of having a baby and being on tape. >> but how can you get there when you feel like you have tried it all. abc's mara schiavocampo is he with her own inspirational story. >> i started off on a january weight loss journey four years ago. and this time, i succeeded, losing a total of 90 pounds. after realizing my issues with food couldn't be fixed with for me, the joy of having my first child in 2011 came with the pain of being my heaviest i've struggled witmy weight my entire life. certain food as drugs. frequently binges out of cocontrol. as i share in my book, i found the only way to get healthy was
trigger foods. all flour and dairy and then completely eliminating them as i shared with amy robach.. she also realized food was her fix. >> i actually gained 35 pounds from binge eating. i didn'tecognize my own body because i had never looked like that in my life. first, i think it's enjoyable, and then, eventually it's real monkey on your back. treatment and dropped the pounds. for so many of us, treating binge eating is ththe real k to losingng weight and finding freedom. >> if first step simply hope and surrender. hope that's there a possibility
surrendering into a plan of action that involves real treatment for a real problem. >> s how do you know if you mimight have problem with binge eating? well my book does have a questionnaire in it to provide some guidance. ultimately if you think you suffer from this issue you should talk to your doctor. awareness is the first step. so often, we're told weight loss is told it's about discipline and self-control. but for so many people it's out much more than this. >> you did this once with your first baby. how's different the second time around? >> you know what's been important is habits. bad habits make life much more difficult. good habits make it easier. exercising every day, keeping up clean eating. >> you're spinning. >> i'm still spinning every day. and like you, ginger, i'm hoping to have 25-pound baby.
>> thank you, mara. now, let's go to amy. >> all right, girls, thank you and here with some advice helping you to reframe your thinking of weight loss in the new year, dr. jennifer ashton. how yothink about things has a huge impact. what do you mean about this? >> no question, we heard from mara, so often, it's told your willpower and discipline, that's not true. i look at things through a medical lens. we want to look good but it's really what's going on inside your body. i'm calling it the three "ps". you want to o focus ononour priorities, perspective and plan. if you do that and really focus on the inside-out, everything else will fall into place. >> but first "p," priority. >> priority. when you think about it as a pymid, yes, we care about what everybody sees. your body needs good food, good fuel, good fitness -- so you do
rest. and on top of it is the mirrorball which is what everybodsees. we do have that element of these things, at see on the >> the next "p" is perspective. >> this is so important. because it's very easy to tend on fus just on what you're going through. but i tell patients all theimime in med sin, you have to remember perspective. so, look at this animation. if you imagine you're on the weight ls road or any kind of health changes you're trying to make, you feel alone, there are tons of people on that path also, itit's realla process not just about the product. so, when you realize you're not alone, i think it gives you that perspective. and it's very important. >> and finally, you got to have a plan. >> nothing works without a plan, and the body will follow the mind. when you're thinking about making these changes, set a meaningfulul goal. not i want to be a size whatever
it's i want to be healthy, i want my coles to drop six, ten points. anticipate obstacles, that's real life. don't let it derail you. lastly, you want to anticipate all of those things but be patient with yourself at the same time. this truly is about your inner health. >> well said. >> thank you. >> inspiring all. thank you so much, dr. ashton. so, for so many of us thisis time of year is about family, friends and faith. robibin sat do with pastor joel osteen to get his perspective on it all. > all rig, lara, thank you. you know it's a new year, new beginning. how can you get your year off to the best possible start. one of america's most popular preachers, dr. joel ostten is here to help us make the most of 2016, always good to be in your presence and seeou, joel.
get to start wh a clean slate. don't you? >> i know. it's a great time to let go of the old. i have learned, robin, if you n't let go of the disappointments you won't receive the new things that t god has in store. so i think it's the perfect time -- we all look back, you got to clean the slate and god will give you a new beginning. >> there are a lot of things going on in the world. in one of your recent messages, i appreciated you said, the economy is up you're up. when the economy is down you're dodown. don't let other things dictate your mood. don't be that way. >> i found that if you start off the day grateful, you find some reason to be thankful to be alive. if you start the day off right, the new year off right, a better year for you. >> how often should parents talk to their children about what is
remain hopeful in the new year? >> yeah, i think we have to go back to explaining to kids somemes it's hard with the shootings and the tragedies. but i think it's important to explain that god gives us all a choice. some people choose to do evil and that's not the right way. the way to overcome that is to be bright lights. we got to be good, be examples of love and kindness, not go to the negativity and the bitterness and pay people back. >> it's been wonderful to see families celebrating this season and so excited but i want to speato those people who say, you know what, robin and joel, it's not a fun time for me. you know, i miss my family and there are some people are very low as they start the new year coming out of the season, what do you say to those people? >> one thing is important, robin, if you're lonely, gone thugh loss, it'smportant to not sit at home by yourself, go out and be a blessing to someone
if you can call a friend, if you volunteer somewhere else, if you get outside of your yourself and not just think my problems, my loneliness, my hurt, i think that pulls you down more. encourage someone to go out even if it's just opening a door for a stranger or baking them a pie. >>nd something that you always have suggested that has really worked for me and my team, you said be concrete with what you want and put it up -- when i'm getting ready in the morning, those positive words are staring back at me. >>ut up those positive afaffirmatio around your house. i am blessed, i am strong. i am healthy. this is a good day. i'm gratul to be alive. sometimes that will remind us that every day is a gift from god. we can never get this day back, ner get this new year back. so, let's make the most t of it. >> it is something to see those words to actually see them and somethg about it takes over. >> something in the inside of you. ll, that's just mind over matter.
it's part of your faith. if you're seeing thosese words, hearing those phrases, i'm blessed, i'm strong, i'm creative, you start gravitating toward that way. >> in 2016, people better get ready y for the ddenly. who said that? >> in one second, god can turn anything around. that's why we need hope. just one touch of god's favor. just suddenly. >> suddenly i am. i am. all right. you can tell i kind of read your books. >> thank you, robin. >> hey, joel, always a blessing to see you and especially on and have new hopes and new dreams. thank you very much. >> well, my pleasure. happy new year to you and all of the "good morning america" viewers. >> thank y, joel. thank you so much, robin. time now for some "pop news." ladies, the first edition of
of the year, it's already shaping up to be a big one for leo dicaprio, he's been nominated for a golden globe as portrayal of a fur trapper in a revenant. buzz is building that this could finally be leonardo's year to take home his first academy award. filmmakers have revealed that despite subzero temperatures, leo would act for hours even while nearly motionless and speechless. leo said it was his hardest role of his life. the ultimate silent role. i ied to take as much dialogue out. it could be in a trendndn recent oscars voting. colifirth for "the king's speech." all proved to less is more.
very hard for leo -- >> robbed in "titanic." aviator here, he had gilbert back then. i have so many leo stories. >> he's been nominated five times for academy awards, never won. >> he's the susan lucci -- >> yes! >> when he gets it it's going to go wild. >> i think people may assume because he's so young he got plenty of time. but a great role is a great role is a great role. and looking forward to seeing that. listen up, gentlemen, why you're passed up again for that promotion, if it makes you feel any better, it may be because u're just too handsome.. a udy from the university of maryland here in the u.s. shows that good-looking men are more lily to be passed off for promotions by male bosses because they're seen as a threat. that's right, they're jealous. they get stuck in middle of the road posts. but they're viewed as competent. but the bosses don't want that
women, on the other hand, we actually, for a change, positive news to report, we don't get paid as much but we're not as affected by looks in the work place because competency and beauty are stereotypically linked when it comes to beauty. and finally, a little fun e to start your new year. this is oliver, and this pig is very hyperactive. hyperactive hog. it's called the zoomies. i know otis never had the zoomies. >> otis never had the zoomies. >> they run in circle and they have to do things like this. it happens actually here on the set. if we could have camera after the third cup of coffee and i have seen amy running around the desk with a a mad cacasef the
we hope you have enough energy on this the first day of the new year to do some zoomies. coming up, the hottest new and we're cooking up a brunch. that's next.amanda i'm amanda krenz, filling in for sabrina and elias this morning. it's 8:25 and you're watching local five. hawkeye fans have taken over pasadena, california. the football team will play in the rose bowl later this afternoon. but it was a sea of gold and black aboard the
