good morning, it is 6:00 a.m., monday, february 15 we're following several new and developing stories. bitter cold temperatures make it difficult for suburban firefighters to battle flames that damaged several row homes, we're live at the scene. dangerous fumes forced five people out of their homes sending some of them to the hospital. it is bitterly cold outside and we're tracking snow showers this morning and rain later. >> reporter: let's hear about that and go over to david murphy with accuweather and karen rogers is taking a look at traffic. >> reporter: no snow on the
terrace yet. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing a couple of snow showers pushing through the northern endurance and more pronounced in south jersey and southern delaware. conditions at the surface are so cold it wouldn't take much to create slick spots, so keep that would. winter weather advisory in effect across south eastern pennsylvania and the poconos. this goes until 10:00 p.m. and doesn't expire until 1:00 a.m. in the poconos, the 10:00 p.m. expiration closer to i-95. there will be light snow we'll get a brief changeover to sleet and all rain later tonight. we see on radar all snow through virginia. the steadier snow will build in gradually as the morning goes on. 19 degrees. ahead of the snow you have cold
temperatures. 17 in millville. 13 in allentown. winds are light, but strong enough to give you a windchill to make it feel like 11 in philadelphia and single digits across the region. as we roll through the day, temperatures will climb him -- climb. we'll not get above the freezing mark until 6:00 p.m. for a couple of hours after 6:00 p.m. we might have slick road conditions as the rain tries to wash away any of the iciness. karen i'll have future tracker 6 show you the progression of this and the snowfall amounts coming up. >> reporter: this is i-95 police activity. northbound traffic approaching cottman, you can see the police off to the right. southbound is heavier volume. that's where we normally see the volume approaching cottman. we expect to see lighter volume
on i-95. we've seen light flurries through the area a lot of that breaking apart here the vine street expressway, no big impact on the roads. we're dry right here. the issues is toward the south where we see the heavier snow showers building in. we can see you that right now. this is dover, delaware, smyrna, route 13. it's not creating too many issues on the main lanes themselves. we're watching traffic slow down with this, the temperature 20 degrees. it is problem with the snow coming down steadily. we're watching the traffic move through, we're not seeing slipping and sliding. the snow is building up on the sides of the road. there goes the plows trying to help you out. this is happening in delaware, looking live in smyrna, that snow band moving through cape may and atlantic city that's what much of the region will look like later on. let's look at the big picture.
when this happens you need to drop the speeds way down. it's not an issue on the blue route and i-95. we're seeing speeds in the 50s. we have a fire location in swathmore yale and harvard avenue. watch for crews on the scene. fire crews battled the brutal cold while fighting a house fire in montgomery county overnight. a blaze left a firefighter injured and three homes damaged. katherine scott is live at the scene with the details. katherine. >> reporter: matt, that's right, multiple units and families inside each of the three row homes. is a people are being assisted by the red cross. that number could grow. take a look at the charred windows, the burned out windows, all the debris, quite a bit of damage to the homes. what a night to be forced out of the homes. the fire started at 11:30 on powell street.
when fire crews arrived they were met with heavy flames on the second floor of the three story rehome -- row home and three people on were trapped. they jammed to the second floor roof and got out safely. the cold posed challenges for firefighters. trucks were dispatched to spread salt. all the water running off the hoses was icing up on the roads. septa, medical buses were positioned nearby so crews could warm up. we spoke to a person who knows the owner of the two properties. she rushed over when she heard of the news. i'm sick of all the good memories we had in that house, oh, my god, oh, my god. you know whether a, you can replace a house, you can't
always replace your life. and back here live, you can still see some of the salt in the street there was icy patches here, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. one ffort -- firefighter was injured, his injuries were minor. katherine scott channel 6 "action news." good prospective on how to look at it. thank you katherine. we're following another developing story, a short police pursuit left a philadelphia street looking like it was involved in a demolition derby. let's go over to annie mccormick in olney with the latest. good morning, tam, you're right, that may have been a short police pursuit, but it left a lot of damage behind, in fact the driver of the stolen vehicle barreled through this intersection at 6th and fisher, you can see debris still left in the rooted way. earlier this morning we were showing you the damaged cars, several parked cars were hit. take a look at the video. police say this started around
13th and rock handle when -- rok land when the suspect took the pizza delivery man's car. police were near the area. the victim called for help and a short pursuit happened. during the short chase, the stolen vehicle collided with this red vehicle injuring a woman inside. then the stolen car didn't stop. it continued to the intersection of 6th and fisher on this block several parked cars became damaged as a result of the chase. the police caught him and arrested him. it is unclear how many charges the suspect will face at this time. the woman in the red car is okay, she was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. police say when the suspect approached the pizza delivery man getting back into his car,
it does not appear he had a weapon. they are looking for a weapon to see is one was used. annie mccormick channel 6 "action news." new this morning, carbon monoxide fumes sickened five people in crescentville section. fire crews were called to tabor road at 11:00 p.m. five people were taken to the hospital for treatment. no word on their conditions. happening today, pope francis will visit mexico's southern state of chiapis. this trip is aimed at boosting the faith in the least catholic state in the country. pope francis will be in mexico until wednesday. looks like the jersey shore is getting hit with snow. >> reporter: more snow to the south and karen showed us that picture down in delaware. in philadelphia not a lot going on. as we go in closer, you can see the northern and western suburbs with a little bit of light snow
and darker shades of gray not expecting that to have a big impact. temperatures are below freezing, it doesn't take much for it to stick to untreated surfaces. salt trucks are on the roads down around dover where we have decent snow falling. we have little bands in south jersey and in philadelphia not a whole lot going on yet. light snow slow it down if you see the flakes coming down steadier as we are seeing to the south. as we take a look outside we have cloudy skies chester down near ppl park. 19 degrees in philadelphia. even though it's not snowing everywhere it is definitely cold out there, you want to bundle up. 18 degrees in wilmington, 15 in trenton. 13 up in allentown. 17 in millville. 23 in cape may. future tracker 6 picking up the
snow story between now and noon we expect the snow to fill in a little bit all the way up to philadelphia. a lot of this will be light snow, every now and then there's the possibility of steadier snow. 3:00 p.m. the snow is past allentown by 3:00 p.m. at the same time warm air is coming in to the south and we're seeing a changeover to rain in cape may and dover. the warm air pushes north. as we transition to rain there could be a period where we see sleet and freezing rain. that's something to keep in mind. after the rain changeover occurs, it isn't lime -- like you turn on a light switch and all the roads are fine, there could icy conditions. by 11:00 p.m. it's past allentown. a winter weather advisory in effect in the i-95 corridor until 10:00 p.m. an it expires
after midnight in allentown and berks county. coating to an inch in south jersey that gets washed away by rain. 1 to 3 in philadelphia to allentown with the best chance of 3 in the lehigh valley and 34 in the poconos. light snow, but it's cold out there, and it will stick pretty easily. lehigh valley light snow, 30 degrees is the high, we zee the temperatures rise above freezing overnight. down the shore we'll get to 40 by this evening. a coating to an inch of snow doesn't stand much of a chance of hanging around long. in philadelphia, 36 is the high, cloudy skies, snow eventually mixing with sleet, perhaps freezing rain before changing overly to rain around dinnertime and road conditions improving a couple of hours after that. 35 is the overnight low, but that's a little misleading because it will be around midnight. by tomorrow morning it will be in the 40s, all rain and showers

coming down steadily. that's the snow that's moving up and coming in towards our direction. that will be an issue for all of us. right now we're looking live at rehoboth beach on route one. you saw traffic move through there. storm tracker 6 live double scan the first band of snow is so light, falling apart. it's area down to the south, in delaware cape may that are getting it more. in dover, you're seeing that. it's going to be moving to fortescue and make up kay we're getting a heavier band along garden state parkway, route 49 in millville and route 30 the white horse pike. in the city, just flurries moving through. in norristown a little bit heavier along 422. watch for that. in pottstown we see a snow shower route 100 in reading, light flurries, as well. we are getting snow during the day that will change to rain, even when it does, you have to watch for the slick spots
because the ground is frozen. a lawsuit filed by a group of women against the university of tennessee accuses the school of violating regulations in the way it handles reports of sexual sawtle -- assaults by student athletes. peyton mannings trainer said he sexually assaulted her he settled the suit. a pilot that was hit with a laser beam was forced to go back to london. the aircraft landed safely back at heathrow. the airline is working with authorities to confirm the source of the laser. such incidents are on the rise, especially in the u.s. as

we have failure decent coverage -- fairly decent coverages on some roads. there's another batch crossing the delaware bay out of central delaware. winter weather advisory kicks in at 10:00 a.m. anne close to i-95. northern bucks, allentown, reading, lancaster you'll not see the advisory expire until after midnight tonight. we'll have small accumulations, but it's so cold it will adhere to road surfaces quickly and then we get the changeover to ice and freeing rain and all rain. the snow is falling past washington and southern virginia. 19 degrees in philadelphia. 13 in allentown. 15 in trenton. obviously it's cold out there. winds not that strong, but strong enough to give us a windchill making it feel like 1 in the city. as we roll through the day, temperatures climb, but we don't
get above freezing until late in the afternoon and this evening. it is then that the snow changes to ice and finally to rain and roads improve after that. when i step inside i'll show you how that progresses through the day, kind of a complicated system. how much road is on the ground. karen, how are the roads. >> reporter: this is the blue route at the schuylkill expressway, we can see how the snow is blowing across the roads, the trouble is although they have been treated. the road surfaces are frozen solid. we've had a couple of days of arctic air. you can see the snow blowing across the roads at this point, be careful as you head out. the vine street expressway, i-95 at cottman, southbound traffic heading toward center city. doesn't seem like a big problem.
northbound we have an accident off to the side, police are out there, watch for that. southbound we see very light volume. we expect light volume with this president's day. we've been talking about the heavier bands south and west. take a look at at this shot. fenwick island, route one, it is covering the road surfaces. it's causing the problems. this is the snow down in delaware heading into new jersey. watch for this as the camera pans it's coming down steadily. it's coating the road surface. the schuylkill expressway, blue route, i-95 the speeds are up, bring them down, even though they are snow showers that can be light, it could be slick. we have an accident at spring mount road and gravel pike. i expect it to be slick later on as the heavy snow bands roll
through the area. the weather played a role at a fire scene in montgomery county. it left a firefighter injured and pushed the residents of three homes out into the fire last night. katherine scott is live on powell street with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tam, we have an update for you, the red cross is assisting 16 people who can not get back inside after the fire in norristown last night. as you look at the damage. you can see the debris, the burned out windows, the char marks on the bricks there, a lot of damage here to three homes in last night's fire, the residents are now at a hotel or with family. wrapped tightly in blankets, residents watched as crews battled flames at a late night fire in norristown. fire started at 11:30 on the 1200 block of powell street. when fire crews arrived they were met with heavy flames on the second floor of the 3 story
row home and reports of three people trapped inside. two residents jumped out of the third through are windows on to the second floor room. >> reporter: the flames started in the middle row home and homes on either side were damaged. salt trucks came through since the water runoff iced up the roads. buses were positioned nearby to provide a place to get warm. the cold temperatures are bringing icy conditions to the fire ground, we have septa buses and medical buses here to try to keep personnel warm. >> reporter: one firefighter suffered a minor injury. the cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation. katherine scott channel 6 "action news." a robbery suspect caused damage and injury trying to flee police in the city's olney section. "action news" reporter, annie mccormick is live at the crash scene at 6th and fisher avenue, annie?
>> reporter: and matt, this is the intersection 6th and fisher where little stolen vehicle came -- where that stolen vehicle came barreling through. it hit a car with a woman inside. there are several parked cars that were damage. take a look at the video. we were told it started several blocks away at 13th and rockland, the suspect tried to rob a pizza delivery man. according to the police, the suspect stole the pizza man's car. police were nearby the victim called for help and a short chase ensued. following the stolen vehicle, that vehicle collided with this red vehicle injurying a woman inside. -- injuring a woman inside. the stolen vehicle continued and
hit several parked cars damaging them, before coming to a stop. it was there police did take him into custody and arrested him. we're not sure what the charges will be against the suspect. the woman who was hit in the red car, we are told she is in stable condition. she was taken to the hospital. they are trying to sort out the details and trying to get an interview from the pizza delivery man to see how he was approached and seep if the suspect was armed with a weapon. for now, live in olney, anne abbey channel 6 "action news." flags around the nation have been lowered to half staff in honor of the late supreme court justice antonin scalia who passed away over the weekend at a resort in texas. his body was flown to virginia after it was determined that he died of natural causes. he was born in trenton, new jersey in 1936. funeral arrangement have not been announced. scalia's sudden death
kicked off a battle that spilled into the white house. some are suggesting president obama leave the naming of the new supreme court justice to the next president. it is outrageous that republicans in the senate and on the campaign trail have already pledged to block any replacement that president obama nominates. president obama says he intends to fulfill his constitutional duty to nominate another justice to fill the open seat. republicans in the senate warn they will try to block any confirmation hearings. time to talk about accuweather. hopefully something can get done in the weather. >> reporter: hopefully something is happening already. storm tracker 6 live double scan shows us we have periods of snow and pockets around the region. as we go around philadelphia it's fairly light snow highlighted in darker shades of
gray. some of the sky 6 cameras up north and traffic cameras karen has been showing us show us partial snow coverage in the northern areas. slow it down if you encounter that. the bigger issue is down south where you see the brighter bands of white pushing through. areas along the atlantic city expressway and parkway and ocean county and southern burlington county. farther to the south we have it through reeds beach and cape may county and dover. as we leave you with the wide view the bands are covering roads. we'll see this fill in. it's kind of choppy scattered snow right now. by noon half the region will see snow, by 3:00 p.m. everybody. as we look outside we have cloudy skies. and down the shore that's where we have seen the snow. cape may, sky 6 showing that to you. the current temperature is
19 degrees in philadelphia. you have to worry about the arctic cold that is in the process of working its way out. the windchill is making it feel like 12 as you step outside at this early hour. future tracker 6 is showing you between now and noon snow is in philadelphia starting to push in and fill in more to the immediate suburbs. you can see by 12:00, a little bit changeover to rain down the shore. by 3:00 p.m. it's snowing all the way past allentown up into the poconos. the new model run shows us the warm air is expected to come in. it's possible that we're changing over to rain in millville and atlantic city sleet and freezing rain is possible for a brief period as we transition from one form of precipitation to the other. 6:00 p.m., the rain line is past philadelphia. there could residual freeze up on untreated road surfaces, but obviously things are getting better. by 10:00 p.m. the snow is up in the poconos.
with roads conditions improving in allentown by 11:00. one inch is all that will accumulate in south jersey before the rain washes it away. in philadelphia, 1 to 3 inches. 3 in allentown and reading and 3-plus in the poconos. a lot of that melting as temperatures rise and the rain starts to build in. we won't get over freezing until late in the afternoon. as the snow filters in and becomes more pronounced it will stay as snow until late when we mix in sleet and freezing rain and eventually change over to all rain. as you just saw on future tracker that probably happens early this afternoon and in the center of the region. 30 degrees in allentown. in allentown you'll have to wait longer for the road conditions to improve. might be as late as midnight and beyond. future tracker 6 picking up the
story tomorrow. in the afternoon we're looking at a band of heavy rain coming through. there could another band of rain later on in the evening hours. this combined with whatever snow might be left over and the hard ground gives us a concern about street flooding that would be tomorrow afternoon. 36 is the high. snow eventually changing to a brief period of ice and eventually to rain late today and tonight. tomorrow, rain and possible street flooding and high of 56. wednesday we're back to 48 with a light shower. the front comes through and we're chilly high of 40. we ease back up into the 50s by the time we head into the weekend. better numbers in this seven-day forecast than what we showed you last monday, but we have issues with the snow today. next, a disgraced former governor faces allegations he tried to choke a woman. >> reporter: you can see we have light flurries coming through,
a little more coming in later, we'll have to need it then. speaking of that, let's head over to karen rogers. >> reporter: we're seeing lighter volume live on the schuylkill expressway. a few minutes ago we saw flurries dancing along the highway. they are light, but the first round of snow is light and breaking apart as it does. nonetheless we have been watching flurries come down on the schuylkill expressway in conshohocken. i-95 highland avenue traffic is light. this was an area where we saw a light snow shower moving through. it's coming in from the southwest. we want to go live to dover, delaware. this is the route one toll plaza in dover, delaware. you can see the snow coming down steadily at this point along route 1 sticking more to the median than the sides of the roads, the main lanes themselves look okay. the trouble the sub freezing temperatures around the clock the past couple of days as it
comes down it will start to stick looking live in dover. we have accidents engle street at conquered road watch for this coming in in delaware county. double scan watching the snow coming in. live look, the first band of snow is breaking apart. it's coming in from the from the southwest where we've seen the heavier bands. the bands along for the -- fortescue, along the garden state parkway and the white horse pike in hammonton. route one is a spot where you see the snow. quakertown, as well, doylestown and lansdale, the light snow falling, it's going to get heavier later on. happening today, classes resume at ursinus college where a stomach bug has sickened
