the trial to another jurisdiction ... the prosecution asked for a bench trial in pulaski county... instead of a jury trial. the defense agreed... which means judge finch will now decide white's fate. legal experts say both sides could view this as a victory.. but the lack of a jury most likely benefits the defense. jack call / radford university if, under the law, the parents are not legally responsible, then obviously the right outcome should be that they would be acquitted, and that might be an easier judgement for a judge to make than it would for jurors. the commonwealth's attorney says he believes the facts are the facts.. and he has both sides a fair trial. # prosecutors will call more murdered waynesboro reserve police officer. they're trying to prove six people are guilty of a gang conspiracy, kevin quick's murder. wednesday's testimony centered largely around an s-u-v murder. anthony davis testified that he saw one of the suspects

after the killing. we learned in court that items inside had fingerprints from several of the suspects. so far the prosecution has introduced around 300 pieces of evidence. ### new this morning... police are investigating two attempted armed robberies in danville. it happened along the 3- thousand block of riverside drive just before 6:30 wednesday. a pittsylvania county woman says a man wearing a ski mask came up with a gun... and demanded money. police say she was grabbed from behind... and hit with the gun... before she ran away. the suspect also took off. the woman was treated at the hospital... and is expected to be o-k. about an hour later... officers responded to the parking lot of the golden coral on holt garrison parkway. police say an armed man in a hoodie... came up to two people. he demanded money... and took off with cash. no word on if the two incidents are related. # new this morning... the class j-611 steam locomotive is preparing for spring excursions. tickets went on sale for museum

unveiling event tonight starting at 5:30. # patrick henry community college holds an information session tonight about its short term training programs. the fields are designed to quickly give students skills needed to help employers fill open positions. food service... and advanced film manufacturing. # the virginia children's engineering council holds its annual convention in roanoke starting today. eight hundred prek-5th grade teachers will attend hands-on workshops showing stem- based convention wraps up on friday. small businesses in martinsville and henry county will get together for a matchmaking event. the economic development office hopes this event will increase local business to business partnerships. the salem high school football team receives a national honor tonight. the army national guard presents its national ranking trophy to the team as part of the 11th annual maxpreps tour of champions. the honor comes

championship. salem finished number 86 in the final rankings and is one of 50 schools being honored this year.### more bad news for twitter. the social media giant says it lost two million users in the last three months of 20-15. that news caused twitter stock to drop 12-percent. at the end of last year... twitter had around 305- million active users. by contrast... facebook has one-point-six billion. even instagram has 400-million users. # youtube takes on streaming services like netflix and hulu. youtube released three made-for- youtube movies wednesday. it's also launching a new series. it's clearly a response to similar moves by competitors. the original content is a part of youtube's "red" subscription service.

a world war ii veteran from virginia beach is planning to spend valentine's day with his wartime girlfriend after more than 70 years apart. 93-year-old "norwood thomas" flew to austrailia and finally reunited with 88-year-old "joyce morris." morris was 17 and thomas was a 21-year-old paratrooper when they first met in london shortly before d day. they lost touch after the war...and married other people... but finally reconnected via skype last year. their love story went viral and a

i'm jenna zibton. and i'm patrick mckee. a u-v-a star emerges during the commonwealth clash. wsls 10's alyssa rae has more from the coaches after their win over virginia tech.# #7 ranked vigrinia took down virginai tech 67-49 tuesday night at j-p-j. one of the game-changers for the cavaliers was isaiah wilkins.. who put up a career high 14 points in the win. sot that's so important we can get that kind of contribution from as i so well anthony in london and with another guy gives us that output on insulin is it balances i think our team and makes us more potent on offense and harder to guard i think he's been playing well i think i'm not touching their team but i think there's more productivity from top to bottom

impala that was driving recklessly in franklin county. police say the car took off... crossed into roanoke county where it hit another vehicle causing it to flip and catch on fire. five people were in the car... 4 are recovering in the hospital. officers say the driver fled the scene on foot. they believe he is armed. police k-9's and virginia state police aviation are assisting in the search for the suspect. charges are pending.### a standoff that's been going on for more than a month... at an oregon wildlife refuge... could be ending this morning. the final four activists inside say later today... they'll leave their weapons behind... and surrender. police have been surrounding them all night. and new developments overnight... cliven bundy the father of wildlife refuge occupation leader ammon bundy... was arrested after flying into the portland airport. he faces a conspiracy charge to interfere with a federal officer -- the same charge his two sons are facing. bundy was at the center of a standoff in nevada with federal officials in 2014 over use

a scary experience for one mother and her 10-year-old son after they were tied up at gunpoint inside their stafford county home. the men broke into the back of their house early wednesday morning. wearing ski masks and armed with handguns the men said if they didn't follow orders they would be killed. they tied up the woman and her son with zip ties before they began to rummage through the home. now that mom is scared to be at home because she's worried the men will come back. danielle lucas:"i don't know if they used there feet or what they used but this is where they got in "butted "held guns to us and said if we didn't do what they told us, they'd kill us." deputies believe they were targeted based on a third person who lives at the home who may be connected to drug activity.### new this morning.. lawyers involved in jesse matthew's capital murder case made an unexpected appearance in court wednesday. the albemarle county commonwealth's attorney... and capital defender both spoke quietly with the judge. an order was entered into the

additional thirty days to file a change of venue motion.... if they plan to ask for one. matthew is accused of abducting and murdering university of virginia student -- hannah graham--- in september of 2014. he is charged with capital murder... and could face the death penalty if convicted. # the father of 13- year-old nicole lovell opens up to doctor phil about his daughter's social media activity and struggles with bullying. david lovell told doctor phil that the last time he saw his daughter was december 19-th. she disappeared nearly six weeks later on january 27-th. lovell told doctor phil that he puts a lot of blame on himself and speculated on any possible motives suspects david eisenhauer and natalie keepers could have. david lovell, nicole lovell's father - "a girl with self- esteem issues anyway somebody told her some good things about her of course it would be easy to seduce a bullied little girl." many of you have asked about nicole's mother.. tammy weeks. weeks tells wsls 10 that she wants to raise awareness about social

but right now... she just wants to grieve the loss of her daughter. ### the u-s justice department is fed up with the city of ferguson. it filed a 56-page lawsuit... claiming the city continues to violate the rights of african americans --- even after the shooting death of michael brown. federal investigators say some police officers would stop people and arrest them without cause -- and use unreasonable force -- to generate city revenue. the d-o-j spent seven months negotiating with the city -- to reform the police department and court system. but when the deal was submitted to council members for a vote tuesday night, they changed those terms -- by adding seven amendments. loretta lynch/attorney general: "it is extremely unfortunate that the city has chosen to litigate this matter rather than move directly to these remedies and reforms that would have benefited the city and avoided the cost of litigation" the action highlights a period of racial tension...somethi ng many in the city want to move on from. #

allowing school security guards to be armed is making its way through the general assembly. the bill passed the education committee on wednesday. the legislation says security guards would have to be retired police officers and get approval from the school board. the virginia citizens defense league thinks permit holders should be allows to carry on school property and believes this bill is a step in that direction. opponents through are concerned. andy goddard/virgini ans for responsible gun laws "if you can find an opening to crack open the door then next year you can add more things and push the door wider." opponents think that even retired officers should go through annual training before being allowed to carry guns on school grounds.### the deadline for federal financial aid forms is coming up. the program provides $150 billion dollars in federal money to more than 13 million students paying for college or career school. filing a fafsa can be complicated... and sometimes overwhelming. the virginia tech director of

donations overnight after winning new hampshire. i'm tracie potts in washington - back to you. the washington and lee mock political convention kicks off this afternoon. the "mock con" nominates the ticket for the party that is out of power. more than 15- hundred washington and lee students will be delegates. the event draws many big political names every year... this year includes former vice president dick cheney... former house speaker newt gingric... and political commentator ann coulter. the convention has correctly predicted the presidential nominees in 19 of the last 25 presidential elections... dating back to 1908. # a bill cleared the house of delegates that allows the electric chair to be used as the default in executions. the measure hopes to address the ongoing questions about virginia's supply of lethal injection drugs. in virginia, inmates have the right to choose between the electric chair or lethal injection. it's especially relevant as ricky gray is scheduled to die next month.

traffic report. a judge will start hearing evidence in the trial against ashley white this morning. judge bradley finch made the unusual decision to grant a change of venue request... after many jurors were ruled out. after the judge's decision to move the trial to another jurisdiction ... the prosecution asked for a bench trial in pulaski county... instead of a jury trial. the defense agreed... which means judge finch will now decide white's fate. legal experts say both sides could view this as a victory.. but the lack of a jury most likely benefits the defense. jack call / radford university if, under the law, the parents are not legally responsible, then obviously the right outcome should be that they would be acquitted, and that might be an easier judgement for a

the commonwealth's attorney says he believes the facts are the facts.. and he has confidence the judge will give both sides a fair trial. # prosecutors will call more witnesses today in the case of a murdered waynesboro reserve police officer. they're trying to prove six people are guilty of a gang conspiracy, with four of those charged with kevin quick's murder. wednesday's testimony centered largely around an s-u-v stolen from quick after his murder. anthony davis testified that he saw one of the suspects scrubbing that s-u-v just days after the killing. we learned in court that items inside had fingerprints from several of the suspects. so far the prosecution has evidence. ### new this morning... police are investigating two incidents in danville wednesday night. the first happened along the 3-thousand block of riverside drive just before 6:30 wednesday. a pittsylvania county woman says a man wearing a ski mask came up with a gun... and demanded money. police say she was grabbed from behind... and hit with the gun... before she ran away. the suspect

standoff in nevada with use of public lands. # a scary experience for one mother and her 10-year-old son after they were tied up at gunpoint inside their stafford county home. the men broke into the back of their house early wednesday morning. wearing ski masks and armed with handguns the men said if they didn't follow orders they would be killed. they tied up the woman and her son with zip ties before they began to rummage through the home. now that mom is scared to be at home because she's worried the men will come back. danielle lucas:"i don't know if they used there feet or what they used but this is where they got in "butted "held guns to us and said if we didn't do what they told us, they'd kill us." deputies believe they were targeted based on a third person who lives at the home who may be connected to drug activity.### new this morning.. lawyers involved in jesse matthew's capital murder case made an unexpected appearance in court wednesday. the albemarle county
