it started around three- thirty thursday afternoon at the dan river plant in brookneal.. and has now burned for more than twelve hours. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier continues our coverage with details on what crews are dealing with on the scene right now. erin.### we spoke with crews on the scene just a little bit ago.. they say the fire is under control right now, but still burning. between 75-to-90 fire fighters have been out battling the flames. and at this point... they're mainly focusing on maintaining the progress they've already made. campbell county's fire marshall says this fire is unusual.. just because of how massive it is-- taking over the 335-thousand square foot facility. the property was a textile plant, but has been shut down. over the past six months.. a recycling plant has been in the process of tearing it apart piece by piece. aside from the cold, the biggest challenge crews have been facing in putting out this fire.. getting resources like water. randall johnson/campbe ll county fire chief "because we are limited to hydrants there

factory in a proper it itself and also in the beginning we had several small spot fires that started in the grass surrounding the plant that we had to deal with," there are some people who live close-by. they say their biggest concern is the impact this fire could have on their houses if it spreads. but at this point.. firefighters do look to be getting it under control. no word on what started the fire.. but an investigation into that is underway. eb, wsls 10. nearly a dozen washington and lee students will get what's left of their belongings today... after their lexington apartment was destroyed in a fire. the apartment is in the 2-hundred block of randolph road in lexington. it started from discarded smoking materila left on the wooden fire escape early wednesday morning. the building is more than 120 years old. senior kaela fiutak was the first to notice the fire. many of her roommates say she saved their lives... waking them up in time to get out. kaela fiutak, discovered fire: "at that point, your mind is

out of there. grab some pants and, didn't even get any shoes and just woke up my flat, apartment mate on the third floor and we tried to get everyone else out." no one was hurt. all of the students have found another place to stay. # we're hearing this morning from the parents of a 1-year-old who died at a home daycare in chesterfield county. jaci and matt allen's son joseph died because of a fire at the daycare. they say their daycare provider had more than 20 years experience and was highly recommended by friends. it wasn't until their son's death that they learned the provider had too many kids under virginia law. it's similar to what happened in lynchburg where two children died in a home daycare fire in february of last year. the operator of that daycare plead guilty to charges but did not spend time in jail. the allen's joined other families at the capitol to fight for tighter regulations for home daycares. jaci allen/mother "it's important many families especially for working parents to have a safe and

children while they're at work." the general assembly is considering several bills to make home daycares safer including fingerprint background check for licensed daycares and a making it a felony if a home daycare provider operates illegally and it leads to the death or serious injury of a child.### the virginia house of delegates passes a bill targeting drivers who smoke cigarettes in cars with children. the bill would make smoking illegal if a child under eight is in the vehicle. drivers could not be pulled over for smoking with children in the car... but they could get a 100-dollar fine if pulled over for another reason... and found smoking. supporters say the measure would help protect the developing lungs of children. but.. opponents say it's an invasive measure by state government. alex morris / smoker you should not be smoking in the car with someone under the age of 18. it's just, they're not allowed to smoke it , why should they have to breathe in the smoke butted to michael holman if they want to smoke in their car, it's their car it's perfectly, they pay taxes for their cars any damn way

final reading. # in what's news today... the washington and lee mock convention continues today. the convention nominates the ticket for the party that is out of power. speakers at today's event include grover norquist, bob goodlatte, ann coulter and dick cheney. the mock convention continues through saturday. you can get free help filling out fafsa forms at virginia tech today. the deadline for federal financial aid forms is coming up... and sometimes the paperwork can be complicated and overwhelming. last week the office helped more than a dozen families during a two- hour period. you don't have to be going to tech to get the help. # this morning food lion will donate fresh produce to feeding america southwest virginia. its in honor of american heart health month. the non-profit supplies food for nearly 130 thousand people each month in an area where about 13 percent of people do not know where they will get their next meal. feeding america also stocks the

organizations throughout our region. bakers from the community will submit their best chocolate dessert and compete for awards... at the annual chocoholic frolic today. you can stop by the rustburg and timbrook libraries to taste the creations and vote for your favorite. tasting tickets are $5... with proceeds benefiting the campbell county public library adult literacy program. # misty copeland is now taking on another classical role. she was the first african american woman to be named principal dancer at the american ballet theater. the ballerina recently posed for a harper's bazaar photo shoot that recreates a series of iconic scenes featured in the paintings and sculptures by edgar degas. the french impressionist was well known for portraits of dancers. the clever concept behind the shoot is in celebration of the opening of a new exhibition at

you can now feel like you're spending a night in vincent van gogh's bedroom, and you don't have to leave the u-s to it. the art institute of chicago recently commissioned a recreation of van gogh's "yellow house" bedroom for an exhibit opening sunday. the exhibit pays tribute to three paintings van gogh created of the room in the late 19th century. the museum is renting out that room for just 10 dollars a night on rental site air-b-n-b. the rate includes two tickets to the exhibition, which runs through may 10th.###

colorado and maryland earlier this week... a georgia police officer was killed by a wanted suspect thursday... and in north dakota .. a police officer was shot yesterday morning in standoff and is not expected to survive. keep cg up entrie sotpaul laney/ cass county sheriff "people are hunting us. and how do you think that sits with us? but yet we wear this badge with honor and pride and we're going to go out every day and protect our communities." contvo there will also be a nationwide moment of silence at 1 this afternoon.### new overnight... two people were shot in danville... police are investigating. just after two this morning... officers responded to a call on stonewall court. police say a 21- year old man... and 22-year old woman were shot but are expected to be okay. they told police they were driving through the intersection of first and abbott street when it happened. this comes as many people in danville are working together to bring an end to violent crime in the city. the community will gather again tonight for a prayer vigil and neighborhood walk at the boys

last friday the danville regional medical center hosted a similar event... where community leaders and supporters talked about reducing crime after a double shooting. # a new york city police officer was found guilty of manslaughter and official misconduct. 28-year old officer peter liang was convicted thursday in the shooting death of akai gurley who was unarmed in the dark stairwell of a public housing project in 2014. liang testified that he didn't know anyone was in the pitch-black stairway when he unintentionally fired his drawn weapon after being startled by a noise. liang could face up to 15 years in prison..### testimony continues today in the trial against ashley white. she is charged with three counts of child abuse and neglect in connection to the death of her 5-year old son.. noah thomas. the prosecution is expected to rest its case today. on thursday we learned more about the charges. the prosecution says two of her child abuse and neglect crimes occurred when she left noah and his six-month-old baby sister home

children's father.. paul thomas.. to work. the third offense occurred when she fell asleep after returning home that morning... leaving noah unattended. that's when the prosecution says he ultimately died. the defense argued falling asleep in your home is not a crime. # new this morning... henrico county school leaders respond after receiving complains about a video shown at glen allen high school. the four minute video titled "structural discrimination: the unequal opportunity race" was shown for black history month. it depicts several runners on a track with african-american runners dealing with obstacles and white runners without. parents say it made some students uncomfortable. the chair of the school board apologized and instructed administrators not to use the video.### teachers from our area.... and across the commonwealth are waking up for the second and final day of the virginia children's engineering convention at the hotel roanoke. nearly eight- hundred teachers are getting hands-on

. this morning we're honoring three virginia valentines who are celebrating at least 40 years of marriage. the first couple we're featuring is "charles and judy gusler" the two met in lexington back in 1970 at a pizza restaurant called "mother's." they've been happily married since august 1975. up next are valentines "susan and paul sykes" or forest. this is from their 40th anniversary party last year. they got married valentines day weekend 1975 in new jersey.

we spoke with crews on the scene just a little bit ago.. they say the fire is under control right now, but still burning. between 75-to-90 fire fighters have been out battling the flames. and at this point... they're mainly focusing on maintaining the progress they've already made. campbell county's fire marshall says this fire is unusual.. just because of how massive it is-- taking over the 335-thousand square foot facility. the property was a textile plant, but has been shut down. over the past six months.. a recycling plant has been in the process of tearing it apart piece by piece. aside from the cold, the biggest challenge crews have been facing in putting out this fire.. getting resources like water. randall johnson/campbe ll county fire chief "because we are limited to hydrants there are none in the factory in a proper it itself and also in the beginning we had several small spot fires that started in the grass surrounding the plant that we had to deal with," there are some people who live

they say their biggest concern is the impact this fire could have on their houses if it spreads. but at this point.. firefighters do look to be getting it under control. no word on what started the fire.. but an investigation into that is underway. eb, wsls 10. nearly a dozen washington and lee students will get what's left of their belongings today... after their lexington apartment was destroyed in a fire. the apartment is in the 2-hundred block of randolph road in lexington. it started from discarded smoking materila left on the wooden fire escape early wednesday morning. the building is more than 120 years old. senior kaela fiutak was the first to notice the fire. many of her roommates say she saved their lives... waking them up in time to get out. kaela fiutak, discovered fire: "at that point, your mind is just, it's go, you just have to get out of there. grab some pants and, didn't even get any shoes and just woke up my flat,

floor and we tried to get everyone else out." no one was hurt. all of the students have found another place to stay. # we're hearing this morning from the parents of a 1-year-old who died at a home daycare in chesterfield county. jaci and matt allen's son joseph died because of a fire at the daycare. they say their daycare provider had more than 20 years experience and was highly recommended by friends. it wasn't until their son's death that they learned the provider had too many kids under virginia law. it's similar to what happened in lynchburg where two children died in a home daycare fire in february of last year. the operator of that daycare plead guilty to charges but did not spend time in jail. the allen's joined other families at the capitol to fight for tighter regulations for home daycares. jaci allen/mother "it's important many families especially for working parents to have a safe and reliable place to send their children while they're at work." the general assembly is considering several bills to make home daycares safer including fingerprint background check for licensed daycares and a

daycare provider operates illegally and it leads to the death or serious injury of a child.### the virginia house of delegates passes a bill targeting drivers who smoke cigarettes in cars with children. the bill would make smoking illegal if a child under eight is in the vehicle. drivers could not be pulled over for smoking with children in the car... but they could get a 100-dollar fine if pulled over for another reason... and found smoking. supporters say the measure would help protect the developing lungs of children. but.. opponents say it's an invasive measure by state government. alex morris / smoker you should not be smoking in the car with someone under the age of 18. it's just, they're not allowed to smoke it , why should they have to breathe in the smoke butted to michael holman if they want to smoke in their car, it's their car it's perfectly, they pay taxes for their cars any damn way the bill still has to pass a final reading. # in what's news today... the washington and lee mock

liang testified that he didn't know anyone was in the pitch-black stairway when he unintentionally fired his drawn weapon after being startled by a noise. liang could face up to 15 years in prison..### testimony continues today in the trial against ashley white. she is charged with three counts of child abuse and neglect in connection to the death of her 5-year old son.. noah thomas. the prosecution is expected to rest its case today. on thursday we learned more about the charges. the prosecution says two of her child abuse and neglect crimes occurred when she left noah and his six-month-old baby sister home alone... while she took the children's father.. paul thomas.. to work. the third offense occurred when she fell asleep after returning home that morning... leaving noah unattended. that's when the prosecution says he ultimately died. the defense argued falling asleep in your home is not a crime. # new this morning... henrico county school leaders respond after receiving complains about a video shown at glen allen high school.
