the shootings happened over a five hour time period at various locations around kalamazoo county. seven people ... including a 14- year-old girl ... were shot killed and police say another person is in serious condition. shortly after midnight police said they arrested 45- year-old jason dalton ... who they have strong suspicions of being the shooter. the kalamazoo county undersheriff gave a chilling description of what happened. undersheriff paul matyas/kalamaz oo county sheriff's office "we've had several shootings here in the county and the city of kalamazoo. they all appear to be related. we have multiple people dead. in summary, what it looks like is we have somebody driving finding people and shooting them dead in their tracks." police have not yet released the names of the the victims. french authorities publish video instructions on how to react in the event of a terrorist attack. this comes after 130 people were killed during an attack in paris

the video is a simple step-by- step guide that gives advice on the do's and dont's in case of an armed attack. it says the first reaction should be to escape ... help others to do so and warn others about the danger. a second part gives advice on how to protect oneself if trapped in a danger zone. the video also advises how to alert police and how to behave when encountering police forces on the scene of an assault. it ends with practical instructions on how to help victims with first aid emergency techniques. meanwhile back in our area ... two people are arrested following a shooting in henry county. officers say the victim was shot in the leg around 10:45 saturday morning. police arrested 38-year-old jason white. he's charged with malicious wounding ... use of a firearm during a felony ... and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. he's in jail without bond.

also arrested. he faces similar charges and remains in jail without bond. anyone with information is asked to contact authorities. a proposed law could keep the names of police officers secret from the public. virginia lawmakers are considering a bill that's raising a lot of controversy. the intent is to protect police officers. open records advocates say the names are an important tool in watching whether police departments are hiring problem officers with taxpayer money. on the other hand ... supporters say handing over the lists of names would put officers in danger. the bill would exempt the names and training records of law enforcement officials from freedom of information act requests. the general assembly is set to unveil its proposed 100- billion two-year state spending plans. lawmakers in both the house and senate will release their budgets today ... which are expected to have significant changes from governor terry mcauliffe's budget.

they won't include any budget items related to expanding medicaid. they also say they plan to spend more money on k- through-12 education and give state employees larger raises. hundreds of protesters gathered at the virginia state capitol to fight a recent permit that would drain coal ash water into local waterways. the state- approved permit would allow dominion virginia power to drain coal ash water from three of its retaining ponds into local rivers. virginia's department of environmental quality says that none of the released treated water would be near drinking water. however ... environmental activists point out that stretches of the james and potomac rivers would be polluted above standards if the plan is allowed. in what's news today... you and your family can enjoy a delightful gospel brunch. this is provided by sarah's place caf. there will be good old- fashioned ... hand clapping and foot stomping gospel music. it's

aston martin is raising a pretty penny for charity... by auctioning off a piece of movie history james bond's vehicle in the new film "spectre" ... the aston martin d-b-ten super- car sold thursday for three-and-a-half million dollars. but ... the super fan can't actually drive the car. it doesn't have proper certifications since it was built for the movie. nine other pieces of memorabilia from "spectre" were also sold ... including a watch and dinner suit worn by bond star daniel craig. you can say good-bye to the banker in the new monopoly game. the new version showed off by hasbro is called "monopoly ultimate banking game." it eliminates both the game's paper money and the banker position. players will now scan a special bank card with a handheld banking unit. there's a special view for visitors

the salem civic center with the final rounds. we've been following a parry mccluer senior through his quest to get a state title like his older brother won in 2011. jarrod clark faced fort chiswell's joseph quesenberry. clark pinned quesenberry to win first place in the 1a 106 weight class. he celebrated with his coach jeremiah brockenbrough and can now add his name to the wall of champions.. next to his coach and his brother kainan. rural retreat has rose to stardom the past two years winning back- to-back team titles.. well coach boyd's boys did it again. in 1a.. rural retreat finished their season with another trophy...comple ting the 3-peat. for the last 14 years you couldn't talk about state wrestling without mentioning christiansburg. well.. make that 15 years. the blue demons captured their 15th consecutive title. they were narrowing cave spring into the finals but pulled away to solidify yet another team win. the school may have to invest in a new trophy case. there were so many individual winners from our area.. we have the full list of winners on the sports page of our website..

democratic presidential hopeful bernie sanders is coming to the commonwealth. sanders will host a rally in norfolk on tuesday. the candidate will discuss topics such as criminal justice ... college affordability and getting big money out of politics. the event starts at 9:30 a-m at the norfolk scope arena. as the political battle over his successor heats up ... a funeral was held saturday for justice antonin scalia ... who died one week ago in texas. justice scalia wanted a simple funeral in a parish church. but as it turned out ... more than three-thousand attended the service in washington d-c. the mass was celebrated by his son paul ... a catholic priest. among those in attendances was vice-president joe biden and ted cruz ... a former supreme court law clerk ... who criticized president obama for not attending. the president and first lady paid their respects friday as justice scalia lay in repose at

author harper lee was laid to rest saturday in monroeville, alabama. a few dozen people gathered at a church in the small town for a private ceremony. she used the town of monroeville as a model for the imaginary town of maycomb ... the setting of her pulitzer prize- winning novel "to kill a mockingbird." lee died friday ... she was 89. an olympic gold medalist claims she got the zika virus while training in brazil back in december. windsurfer marina alabau said she suffered painful symptoms including a fever and rash ... her doctor diagnosed her with zika. alabau is currently competing at a competition in israel. she says her experience with the virus won't stop her from competing in the games in august. marina alabau / olympic gold medalist windsurfer - "there are some countries that don't want to send these sic athletes so it was in that point when i say 'ok, i should say

we still have a chance for a wintry mix of rain and snow week here in southwest virginia ... here's a look back at some of this week's best moments. a christiansburg man was honored for his 52 years of service as a rescue squad worker. 80-year-old kelly walters was presented with a resolution of appreciation from the general assembly thursday. walters served on the christiansburg rescue squad.. and helped start the riner rescue squad. he still aides on calls when he can. while it was an honor.. walters says he is content with hearing a thank you from the hundreds of community. kelly walters, christiansburg/ pleases me, when they there when something

from them than all this other." walters says he didn't know he that his family and friends had to trick him into going to richmond to accept it. a 20-thousand dollar grant is making its way to bedford. governor terry mcauliffe announced the virginia main street grants on tuesday. the state is handing out 150- thousand dollars in grants to help historic downtown neighborhoods. mcauliffe says ... the grants create jobs within the community and boost revenue. roanoke county police officers were up bright and early in the morning having coffee with people in the community. this is the first time the police department has held a "coffee with a cop" event. it's something that more than two-thousand departments across the nation are doing.. to connect with community members.. build relationships.. and of course, have some morning coffee. officers say it's nice to interact

lawmakers in both the house and senate will release their budgets today ... which are expected to have significant changes from governor terry mcauliffe's budget. republican lawmakers have said they won't include any budget items related to expanding medicaid. they also say they plan to spend more money on k- through-12 education and give state employees larger raises. hundreds of protesters gathered at the virginia state capitol to fight a recent permit that would drain coal ash water into local waterways. the state- approved permit would allow dominion virginia power to drain coal ash water from three of its retaining ponds into local rivers. virginia's department of environmental quality says that none of the released treated water would be near drinking water. however ... environmental activists point out that stretches of the james and potomac rivers would be polluted above standards if the plan is allowed.

doors open at nine am. february is black history month. people in our area want to raise awareness about african american history and culture. workers from the "blacksburg museum and cultural foundation" held a "soul food sampling" saturday afternoon. wsls 10's duke carter has more. the purpose was to showcase some of the african american neighborhoods in the town of blacksburg that are no longer there. the goal -- to make sure people understand the history in the town of blacksburg. this building, "the saint luke and odd fellows hall," was the hot spot for social gatherings, especially for african americans during the 50's and 60's. richard wade/new town resident nats "all the kids came here for social hour maybe once or twice a week," richard wade lived in "new town" a former african american neighborhood in the town of blacksburg. in fact, in this image -- his home sits directly next door to the odd fellows building. members in the blacksburg museum and cutlrual foundation held the second annual soul food sampling.
