syndikate. are charged in quick's death, the other two are accused of being part of a racketeering conspiracy. the prosecution has called more than two dozen witnesses and entered 400 pieces of evidence in the case. quick was reported missing in february 2014. his body was found a week later in goochland county.### the trial begins today for one of the men charged in connection to a shooting that killed two and hurt four others in roanoke. several charges were filed against demetrius wade... including first degree murder. the charges stem from a shooting at the former obenchain's garden center in january of last year. ronald ramey and leonard suspect...william october. the trial is expected to last all week. # a woman faces reckless driving charges following a three vehicle crash in campbell county. it happened around four sunday afternoon on route 696.

struck an acura after failing to brake in time. the acura was then hit by another car. all five people involved in the crash.. including barett's young daughter are being treated for serious injuries. the incident remains under investigation. ### a ski lift at a popular resort in west virginia will be closed indefinitely. this comes after a mechanical failure caused the cables to drop at "timberline resort"... leaving nearly one hundred people stranded... and injuring two others. seven people were treated on scene... two were sent to the hospital.. but are expected to be o-k. it took the ski patrol about two hours to remove everyone from the lift. no word on what caused the malfunction. # northside high school students and parents... still have questions... after the announcement of changes in leadership at the school.. and threats of a school shooting last week. tonight.. one roanoke county school board member is hosting a community forum as a chance for parents to come together to voice their questions and concerns. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier joins

parent expect tonight.. erin?### this is a chance for anyone in the community to come voice their concerns. earlier this month it was announced that northside high school's principal would be stepping down and the vice principal would be reassigned... tonight offers parents and students their first chance to meet the new administration that will be in place for the remainder of the year. doctor dan lyons, the former superintendent for lexington city public schools, has been selected as the interim principal. i spoke with tom mccracken, the roanoke county school board member who called this community forum... he says he made the plans before last week's shooting threat at the high school-- but expects a lot of questions about that incident and the way it was handled as well. many parents were upset the school learned about the threat wednesday afternoon.. and didn't alert parents until thursday morning, just before classes started. i really don't know where we could've gone, what we could've done, if we could've done it better. my job as a school board member is to try and investigate and find out--

in rockbridge county, there were no snow days built in last year... so they made changes for this year... building in five additional student days and adding time to the school day too. right now, they have enough banked time to miss about three more days. in montgomery county.. and roanoke city... they are still okay on days. # in what's news today... central virginia community college holds a partnership informational meeting tonight. rising high school seniors interested in getting a head start in the fields of nursing, emt, welding and others will find out how they can take college courses while also receiving high school elective credits. virginia tech undergraduates students showcase their work and discuss research in a public forum today. this week is the undergraduate research and creative scholarship conference at virginia tech in blacksburg. previously... the conference lasted one day... now it's a week of activites and events. # lynchburg mayor michael gillette.... and vice mayor ceasor

there are a whole lot of people hoping they have the right stuff to go to space. nasa says it received a record 18- thousand 300 applications for its astronaut candidate training program. that's nearly three times the number the agency received in 2012 -- the most recent class. of the thousands who applied, only eight to 14 people will be chosen. since 19-59, there have only been 338 astronauts. once final candidates have been selected, they will undergo two years of basic training on things from spacewalking to learning russian.### turning back to the forecast...

welcome back to virginia today here on w-s-l-s 10....it's i'm jenna zibton. and i'm patrick mckee. another daytona 500 is in the books and a virginia native takes home the win. wsls 10's alyssa rae has a look at the action from "the great american race". # alyssa denny hamlin ends joe gibbs racing's 23 year drought at the daytona 500. jgr's last win in the "great american race" was in 1993 with dale jarrett. needless to say.. joe gibbs and his drivers wanted one of their cars in victory lane. vo this is how it happened. starting in front..rookie chase elliott.. the youngest pole-sitter in the history of the daytona 500 at 20 years old. -but his time in the lead was short lived.. the #24 car gets

spree. jeff getting/prosec uting attorney, kalamazoo county "this wasn't hurried in any way, shape or form. they're on video. we've watched the video with law enforcement." dalton's alleged rampage played over the course of nearly seven hours... ...starting at an apartment complex late saturday afternoon.... ...where police say he gunned down a woman in the parking lot. the victim is hospitalized, and expected to survive... ....her neighbors described the horrifying attack. neighbor "he was here to kill." more than four hours later, another attack - a father and his teenage son shot and killed at a car dealership. just minutes after that, police say dalton opened fire on five people in a restaurant parking lot, killing four and injuring another. he was finally arrested just after 12:30 am sunday morning. a passenger who rode with dalton before the rampage described troubling behavior. matt mellen/uber passenger "we got maybe a mile from my house, got a telephone call, after that call he started driving erratically. we were kind of driving through medians, driving through the lawn. once he came to a stop i jumped out of the car and ran away." perhaps even more bizarre, a source with knowledge of the investigation says dalton

passengers between shootings. investigators think he was looking for even more fares after the final attack. i'm reid binion, reporting. uber confirmed that dalton was a driver and said he had passed a background check. they also issued a statement extending condolences to victims and families and offering to help with the investigation. the virginia tech communtiy continues moving forward after another incdient involving two students. last month, david eisenhauer was charged with abducting and killing nicole lovell with classmate natalie keepers charged with helping to plan the cirme and illegally disposing of the body. montgomery county chief prosecutor mary pettitt said that most students fall int he age range for people most likely to commit murder and to be initially diagnosed with mental health issues. pettitt also says it's the first time that students are away from their family support systems for the first time.### new this morning... the woman at the center of a debunked rolling stone article about a rape at the university of virginia has been ordered to

a federal judge ordered the woman... identified only as "jackie"... to submit to a april.... as part of a civil lawsuit. the judge also set an october trial date for the case... expected to last two weeks. u-v-a administrator nicole eramo sued rolling stone and the article's author for defamation. the magazine later retracted the piece. # bill cosby's wife camille is scheduled to give her deposition in today. the comedian's attorneys are still fighting to stop it... eight women have sued bill cosby for defamation. they claim he portrayed them as liars, after they publicly accused him of sexually assaulting them. they're among 50 women who have leveled sexual misconduct allegations against cosby. he denies any wrongdoing.### after administrative changes over the past few weeks and a threat at northside high school last week.. many parents and students have unanswered questions for the school leaders.

school board member is hosting a community forum as a chance for parents to come together to voice their questions and concerns. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier joins us live with more on what can parent expect tonight.. erin?### the forum tonight will offer parents and students a chance to talk to school board members and the new school administration about what has happened at northside high school lately. last thursday... many students stayed home from school... after rumors of a shooting threat. the school was first notified about reports of the threat on wednesday afternoon... but didn't address the reports until early thursday morning. there was an increased police presence on campus... as investigators worked to figure out that the threat was actually a hoax. many students stayed home from school.. and were excused for their absences. tom mccracken.. the school board member who called the forum, expects many questions about the incident-- and the change in administration as well. he originally called the forum after the school's principal, frank dent, suddenly announced he would be stepping down...

puckett asked to be reassigned. there's a lot of gossip going out there, in both of these issues that northside has had to face over the past two weeks. and i think it's healthy to hear. we might not always agree, as a school board member, i might not always agree with a parent that's really frustrated. but they have a right to be frustrated and they have the right to have a productive place, a forum to vent. tonight, parents and students will be introduced to doctor dan lyons. he's the former superintendent for lexington public schools... and will be filling in as the interim principal for the remainder of the year. the forum starts at seven p-m.. at northside high school. in 10 cares heart health, three tennessee police officers are being called heroes. they were called to help a man who was not breathing. armed with a defibrillator -- they were able to bring him back to life.### monday night just after 11pm a 54 year old lebanon man

his wife makes this frantic call to 911 my husband is seizing or stroking i need an ambulance now mam, is he breathing? no. he is turning red. with the help of the 911 dispatchers, the wife begins chest compressions till help can arrive sot:26-:30 quick corporal pj hardy / lebanon police "this is our first aid kid every officer goes out with on patrol every day" the 1st responders are lebanon police officers william kennedy, nate beatty and sgt titus kelley the most important piece we have is our aed the officers are medically trained and armed with one of these, an automated electronic defibrilator you guys are 1st responders, how citizens we are 1st responder, 1st aid trained according to police, sgt kelley takes over chest compressions while officer beatty removes the man's shirt after several cycles, the man is still unresponsive. that's when officer kennedy uses the aed to shock the man's heart

minutes before ems or paramedic squad 3 minutes is huge absolutely and 3 minutes is long time and there doing what they are trained to do according to police: the man regains his pulse and he begins breathing on his own. proud to be a cop our officers are dedicated law enforcment doesn't end in handcuffs and handguns we have the opportunity to make a difference in the world and last night they did and we are very proud of them. all three officers have been nominated for the prestigious life saving award. they will receive their commendations at an upcoming city council meeting. stroke survivors are more likely to take their medications as directed... when they receive it by mail. researchers from the american heart association analyzed nearly a decade's worth of prescription refills from a large group of stroke patients. they found people who had prescriptions filled at a pharmacy... were less compliant about taking their medications... than those who

voters went to the polls in nevada and south carolina. they will do it again this week with republicans in nevada and democrats in south carolina. then, all eyes turn to super tuesday where voters in 13 states, including virginia, cast their ballots. for the republicans, donald trump remains on top after a big win saturday in south carolina. there's a tight race behind him for number two. rubio hasn't won a state yet, but cruz isnt' winning his key group .. evangelicals. in south carolina they went for trump. sot: ted cruz/ r presidential candidate :26-:31 "there is a division of opinion and the course of a primary is an ongoing conversation." democrats are getting ready to square off in south carolina this weekend. analysts think if she wins big, that will give her a lot of momentum heading into super tuesday, posing a big problem for senator bernie sanders. after a poor showing, florida governor jeb bush left the race for the white house.### happening today - republican presidential candidate john kasich makes a stop in virginia ahead of the state's march 1-st primary.

george mason university... then will head to charlottesville this afternoon. the ohio governor will end the day in richmond with a town hall at virginia commonwealth university. he says his goal is to collect delegates in key republican contests as massachusetts, vermont, virginia, mississippi, michigan and illinois. virginia lawmakers released their budget recommendations for the next two years. the republican- led house and senate money committees presented their ideas on sunday. their budget plans focus on public education and pay raises for state workers. republicans and democrats both support the idea of making sure virginia is less reliant on the federal government. del. r. steve landes, r-25th district: "hopefully, he'll look at what we've done and we can show that we made targeted investments in areas we think would make sense, and at the same time, he'll get another shot at it and we'll see what he does." democratic governor terry mcauliffe could not convince republicans to include medicaid expansion in the budget. however he did get them to

tonight offers parents and students their first chance to meet the new administration that will be in place for the remainder of the year. doctor dan lyons, the former superintendent for lexington city public schools, has been principal. i spoke with tom mccracken, the roanoke county school board member who called this community forum... he says he made the plans before last week's shooting threat at the high school-- but expects a lot of questions about that incident and the way it was handled as well. many parents were upset the school learned about the threat wednesday afternoon.. and didn't alert parents until thursday morning, just before classes started. i really don't know where we could've gone, what we could've done, if we could've done it better. my job as a school board member is to try and investigate and find out-- and if we need to change how we do things, or if we made a then we need to be willing to do that. many students, including mccracken's daughter who attends northside, stayed home

more than four hours later, another attack - a father and his teenage son shot and killed at a car dealership. just minutes after that, police say dalton opened fire on five people in a restaurant parking lot, killing four and injuring another. he was finally arrested just after 12:30 am sunday morning. a passenger who rode with dalton before the rampage described troubling behavior. matt mellen/uber passenger "we got maybe a mile from my house, got a telephone call, after that call he started driving erratically. we were kind of driving through medians, driving through the lawn. once he came to a stop i jumped out of the car and ran away." perhaps even more bizarre, a source with knowledge of the investigation says dalton picked up and dropped off passengers between shootings. investigators think he was looking for even more fares after the final attack. i'm reid binion, reporting. uber confirmed that dalton was a driver and said he had passed a background check. they also issued a statement extending condolences to victims and families. the virginia tech communtiy continues moving forward after another incdient involving two

end the day in richmond with a town hall at virginia commonwealth university. he says his goal is to collect delegates in key republican contests as massachusetts, vermont, virginia, mississippi, michigan and illinois. virginia lawmakers are giving their budget recommendations for the next two years. the republican- led house and senate money committees presented their ideas on sunday. their budget plans focus on public education and pay raises for state workers. republicans and democrats both support the idea of making sure virginia is less reliant on the federal government. del. r. steve landes, r-25th district: "hopefully, he'll look at what we've done and we can show that we made targeted investments in areas we think would make sense, and at the same time, he'll get another shot at it and we'll see what he does." democratic governor terry mcauliffe could not convince republicans to include medicaid expansion in the budget. however he did get them to commit to more investments in economic development. lawmakers

hope to approve a new budget within the next month.### marijuana reform is moving forward in the commonwealth... the virginia senate passed a bill that will allow the production and manufacturing of two different marijuana oils for patients with epilepsy. it's called the medical marijuana program improvement bill. last year, two bills gave epilepsy patients a defense if found in possession of cannabis oils. but, the law provided no way for patients to actually obtain the oils without breaking federal and state laws. this bill will now be passed on to the house for review. local marijuana advocacates say they would like to see more medical professionals support the measure.# when we get a box, we typically want to see what's inside. but a christiansburg company looks at the box itself. prestar packaging maunfactures boxes for things like board games and d-v-ds. the company started with just two employees in 1995. today more than twenty people work there. changing consumer habits have allowed this company to grow by bringing new products to the

here's a look at "five things you need to know" before you head out the door this morning. a michigan man accused of killing six people and seriously injuring two others in a random shooting spree is expected in court today. investigators in kalamazoo say uber driver "jason dalton" chose victims at random saturday night. he shot people outside an apartment complex, a car dealership and a restaurant over nearly seven hours.
