the virginia supreme court will not hear the appeal of a lovingston man... convicted in connection to the death of alexis murphy. randy taylor's request was denied by the high court. in 2013... a jury found taylor guilty of the murder of nelson county teen alexis murphy. he was sentenced to two life sentences. taylor maintains his innocence a family member of alexis murphy says they're happy with the decision... but it doesn't bring them closure. they still want to know where to find her body. # the man charged with first degree murder in the death of 13-year old nicole lovell hires his own attorney. 18-year-old david eisenhauer is now being represented by anthony anderson of anderson and friedman and john lichtenstein of lichtenstein law group. 19-year old natalie keepers also faces charges related to lovell's death. both suspects have preliminary hearings scheduled for march 28-th. eisenhauer and keepers are being held without bond.### february is teen dating violence prevention and awareness

congress. it's a topic that doesn't come up often.. until sometimes it's too late. experts say only one in four parents talk to their children about domestic violence .. a statistic congress is looking to change. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier joins us live with more on the issue that affects more teens than many people realize. # this year alone.. more than one and a half million teens, both boys and girls, will be abused by an intimate partner. technology is one of the biggest factors that has changed over the years. before, teens in unhealthy relationships were only subjected to the abuse while at school or hanging out in person.. but the constant communication that cell phones and texting provides-- makes the abuse in unhealthy relationships even more constant, and difficult to escape from. in 20-10.. virginia was given an "f" grade by "break the cycle" for it's laws on protective orders. back then, laws excluded people who were in dating relationships from accessing

the state has vastly improved its laws... expanding to cover teens in relationships.. same sex couples.. and even animals that have been abused. but sarah higginbotham,the coordinator for the "voilence can end program" says there's still a long way to go when it comes to teens and the law. sarah higginbotham, m.s. the issue is if they're under eighteen they're still going to need an adult to go in and assist them. and that can create a gap for us so we still need to work on our laws. bump to: 41:16-41:26 one other key piece is talk. talk to the child. many parents are scared that they don't know what to say. but communication is key to our prevention. on your screen are some numbers for local resources that can help.. including confidential hotlines. higginbotham says these can provide more information for someone who is in an abusive relationship... or a parent looking to step in. we've posted these to our website wsls- dot-com. the key is talking to our kids and teens about what is a healthy

we'll have more on the red flags of an unhealthy relationship to look out for coming up in our next half hour. eb, wsls 10. the controversy surrounding the clerk of montgomery county circuit court continues. as wsls 10's brie jackson explains.... the board of supervisors voted to eliminate the supplemental pay of erica williams. # brie oncam close to 22 thousand dollars. thats how much the county could have paid erica williams. but tonight they voted 4 to 3 to eliminate that pay. take vo during a work session this evening, board chair chris tuck presented information about erica williams attendance and past evaluations of her former employees .there have been a lot of questions surrounding her decision to not re-hire 4 people after she was re- elected.since then there have been a lit of back and forth between county

eliminate her supplemental pay from the county.that money would have been in addition to the roughly 120,000 she recieves from the state.some residents spoke in support of williams. some residents spoke in support of williams. the say the county should not punish constitutional officers for doing what they have a right to do which includes making personnel decisions. county leaders decided to move forward with eliminate williams supplemental pay. take sot chris tuck/ moco bos chair 10:56:32 "we can send a message to our constitutional officers if you fire hire your staff and you can not operate your office and you have to call in people. guess what? you are going to lose you supplement." brie tag monday nights decision does not affect the pay of other employees, only erica williams. in montgomery county, bj, wsls 10 roanoke mayor david bowers says he will not run for congress in the 9-th district. bowers first announced in

for the seat which congressman morgan griffith currently holds. while bowers is not running for the seat he does have plans to reopen his law office full time and will continue to be involved in the city.### in what's news today... keeping kids safe online... the christiansburg parks and recreation department... teams up with the police department's internet crimes against children unit for an internet safety course. the free presentation includes safety tips about the most popular apps for kids... and a discussion about self- victimization and cyberbullying. # the henry county board of supervisors discusses how to pay for the new meadow view elementary school. in december... the county issued $10 million dollars in bonds to pay for the new building. the school will be in the collinsville district.... replacing collinsville primary and john redd smith elementary schools. # today one of two historic slave structures on the greenfield preston plantation will be moved in botetourt county. those who oppose the move say it would hurt their history...

structure. # the roanoke county board of supervisors meets today to discuss tourism in the roanoke valley. the board will hear a briefing from the roanoke valley convention and visitors bureau who supports designating the roanoke valley as virginia's blue ridge. the board is then expected to pass a resolution supporting the designation and directing county agencies to use the new brand on promotional and marketing materials. according to the county, tourism has an economic impact of nearly year. the botetourt county board of supervisors meets tonight to talk about county taxes. the board is looking to move the due date from december 5th to november 1st after people in the county requested the date move away from the christmas holiday. the board will also talk about changing the location of the troutville voting precinct.### employers want healthier employees...and as a result, popular. according to a recently

traffic report. a twist in a murder trial... involving a shooting at the former obenchain's garden center in roanoke. demetrius wade is charged in connection to the deaths of ronald ramey and lenard hamlett. wade initially pleaded not guilty to those charges... but changed his mind after an entire morning of jury selection. wade pleaded "no contest" and took a plea deal for two murder and firearms charges. the judge said he could face a maximum of 40 years for each murder charge... and an additional mandatory five years for each firearms charge. chastity saunders/ramey' s daughter "my dad means everything to us. we've already given everything to god and we knew this trial was going to be solved before we went into the courtroom today. for our family we had to deal with this well over a year and we lost the backbone of our family." the assistant commonwealth's attorney says the victim's family members are expected to testify when wade is sentenced. # jury deliberations are expected

murder trial of waynesboro reserve police captain kevin quick. both sides, presented closing arguments on monday. the defense argued that none of the six are charged with kidnapping or murder. rather four of them are charged with violent crime in aide of racketeering and using a firearm in those crimes with the other two charged with racketeering. the defense says it takes a criminal enterprise to be charged with these crimes, which it claims the 99 goon syndicate is not. the prosecution though argued that the group is a criminal enterprise. the prosecution says the evidence shows that the group is a criminal enterprise.### group is a criminal enterprise.### the michigan man... accused of going on a shooting rampage... and killing six people appeared in court. jason dalton is charged with six counts of murder and was denied bail. the prosecutor says dalton also admitted his involvement. police believe dalton... an uber driver... shot eight people at an apartment complex, restaurant, and car dealership in kalamazoo saturday night. so far, no motive has been determined... and police have not

dalton and the victims. if convicted, dalton could be sentenced to life in prison. # the commonwealth moves another step closer to enacting stronger gun laws. the virginia general assembly gave final approval today on legislation that allows out of state concealed weapon permit holders to legally carry guns in virginia. it also strengthens the state's gun laws by taking guns away from domestic abusers and expands access to background checks at gun shows. governor terry mcauliffe is expected to sign the legislation later this week. ### a connecticut judge is deciding whether to dismiss a wrongful death lawsuit... against a rifle maker... over the sandy hook elementary school shooting. twenty children and six educators were killed when adam lanza fired shots from a bushmaster a-r- 15 rifle in newtown, connecticut. the gun is based on an automatic, lightweight weapon... originally commissioned by the u-s military. family members of the victims are hopeful the lawsuit will make the manufacturers think twice about advertising and selling assault rifles to

nicole hockley, mother of shooting victim "he didn't choose another weapon. he didn't use another style of gun. he chose the ar 15 in the manufactures need to be held responsible for that." defense attorneys say the gun sale was within the guidelines of the law.... while the families attorneys say you don't have to break a law to found negligent. the judge will take sixty days to review the arguments before making a decision. # threat at northside high school... parents concerns over the school system's protocol. during a community forum monday night ... parents demanded answers as to why school leaders did not notify them when they first received the threat. the school was first notified about reports of the threat on wednesday afternoon but did not address the reports until early thursday morning. kathy meador / parent it was their responsibility and they failed miserably butted to they should have already had policies in place on how to handle something like that the administration has apologized and is re- evaluating what happened.

member tom mccracken says he hopes better communication between parents and school incident. ### this year more than one-point- five million high school students will experience physical or verbal abuse by the person they're dating. stop... including congress, which has designated february as teen dating violence prevention and awareness month. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier has more on why this is something than adults, erin?### women between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four are three times more likely the be abused by an intimate partner than the rest of the population. and often with teens.. they confuse the jealousy as love. sarah higginbotham.. the coordinator for the "violence can end program" says often times, an abusive partner will put down on their significant other's parents and friends... creating more dependency on themselves. out for if you believe someone that you know is in an abusive relationship...

especially moodiness or sadness. also, watch for distance or isolation with more time spent alone and less time with family and friends. finally.. lying can be another red flag to watch out for.. especially when it comes to topics about their significant other. sarah higginbotham, m.s. i would tell them to listen to their gut. your gut doesn't lie. we have very strong intuitions. if it doesn't feel right it's probably not right and love really shouldn't hurt. it should be healthy and respectful. if you question it, talk to somebody that you trust and feel comfortable with and know that you deserve to be respected and deserve the right treatment and the right love. the key is talking to kids and teens about what is a healthy relationship and what is not. on your screen are some numbers for local resources that can help.. we've also posted these to our website, wsls-dot-com. it's important to remember that abuse is not always physical.. it can be mental and emotional as well-- if you feel like

not right-- talk to someone and get help. eb, wsls 10. a new study suggests some driving distractions are riskier than others. virginia tech transportation institute researchers used cameras... sensors... and radar... to collect data on the real-world behaviors of more than 35- hundred drivers. applying makeup or interacting with people in the back seat had little impact on accidents ... but driving while angry, sad or emotional ... created almost ten times the risk of a crash. speeding was the most dangerous driving behavior -- increasing the risk of an accident by thirteen times. # in 10 cares heart health .. british researchers say they have developed a new genetic test to improve diagnoses in people with inherited heart conditions. researchers showed that by looking at a particular group of genes they were able to

inherited heart conditions with one simple test. the study was funded by the british heart foundation. the foundation hopes the test will be rolled out nationally over time. s/ dr. jan till/consultant :16 "this test is a broad panel so that we can hone in on more accurate diagnosis much quicker and in a way that's less expensive. so i think it's really gonna help our patients." the test looks at all 174 genes that can show inherited heart conditions, which is expected to give cardiologists more confidence in treating patients.### if you need an excuse for some chocolate today... eating chocolate regularly appears to improve mental skills. a study published in the journal--- appetite--- found people who ate chocolate at least once a week performed better at mental skills... than those who ate chocolate less often. those who ate chocolate once a week or more performed better on tests. they had improved memory... concentration... and

democrats filed the lawsuit last year challenging the 2013 law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls. they say the law illegally depresses minority voting. republicans who championed the law say it's a common-sense protection against election fraud. more than 30 states have some form of voter id requirement. the trial starts monday. it's expected to last at least a week. ### registered voters have until five tonight to submit a request to their local voter registration office... to get an absentee ballot for the march 1- st presidential primary election. several voters in the hampton roads area received absentee ballots already filled out. voting officials call it a clerical error... with the company that printed the ballots absentee and test ballots were sent in the same box... but they weren't separated.. causing the wrong ones to be sent to voters. william lewis, hampton electoral board vice chairman" you just have to have faith in the process. whenever you have human beings you're going to have human error. this is a very small number of ballots that

a twist in a murder trial... involving a shooting at the former obenchain's garden center in roanoke. demetrius wade is charged in connection to the deaths of ronald ramey and lenard hamlett. wade initially pleaded not guilty to those charges... but changed his mind after an entire morning of jury selection. wade pleaded "no contest" and took a plea deal for two murder and firearms charges. the judge said he could face a maximum of 40 years for each murder charge... and an additional mandatory five years for each firearms charge. chastity saunders/ramey' s daughter "my dad means everything to us. we've already given everything to god and we knew this trial was going to be solved before we went into the courtroom today. for our family we had to deal with this well over a year and we lost the backbone of our family." the assistant commonwealth's attorney says the victim's family members are expected to testify

jury deliberations are expected to begin today in the murder trial of waynesboro reserve police captain kevin quick. both sides, presented closing arguments on monday. the defense argued that none of the six are charged with kidnapping or murder. rather four of them are charged with violent crime in aide of racketeering and using a firearm in those crimes with the other two charged with racketeering. criminal enterprise to be charged with these crimes, which it claims the 99 goon syndicate is not. the prosecution says the evidence shows that the group is a criminal enterprise.### the michigan man... accused of going on a shooting rampage... and killing six people appeared in court. jason dalton is charged with six counts of murder and was denied bail. the prosecutor says dalton also admitted his involvement. police believe dalton... an uber driver... shot eight people at an apartment complex, restaurant, and car dealership in kalamazoo saturday night. so far, no motive has been

found a connection between dalton and the victims. if convicted, dalton could be sentenced to life in prison. # the commonwealth moves another step closer to enacting stronger gun laws. the virginia general assembly gave final approval on legislation that allows out of state concealed weapon permit holders to legally carry guns in virginia. it also strengthens the state's gun laws by taking guns away from domestic abusers and expands access to background checks at gun shows. governor terry mcauliffe is expected to sign the legislation later this week. ### a connecticut judge is deciding whether to dismiss a wrongful death lawsuit... against a rifle maker... over the sandy hook elementary school shooting. twenty children and six educators were killed when adam lanza fired shots from a bushmaster a-r- 15 rifle in newtown, connecticut. the gun is based on an automatic, lightweight weapon... originally commissioned by the u-s military. family members of the victims are hopeful the lawsuit will make the manufacturers think twice about advertising and selling

of virginia are heading to federal court to argue that the state's voter id law is unconstitutional. democrats filed the lawsuit last year challenging the 2013 law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls. they say the law illegally depresses minority voting. republicans who championed the law say it's a common-sense protection against election fraud. more than 30 states have some form of voter id requirement.. ### registered voters have until five tonight to submit a request to their local voter registration office... to get an absentee ballot for the march 1- st presidential primary election. several voters in the hampton roads area received absentee ballots already filled out. voting officials call it a clerical error... with the company that printed the ballots absentee and test ballots were sent in the same box... but they weren't separated.. causing the wrong ones to be sent to voters. officials say they have identified the voters who got the ballots and they're working to give them the correct ones. #

here's a look at "five things you need to know" before you head out the door this morning. the supreme court of virginia denies an appeal for the nelson county man convicted of killing alexis murphy. the high court will not hear from randy taylor's counsel on why he wants a new trial. an appeal was filed in april and refused on friday. taylor is serving two life sentences for murphy's murder in 2013. he has continued to say he's innocent. a group of survivors of sandy hook shooting victims are filing a lawsuit against gun-maker remington. this comes after 26 people were killed when adam lanza opened fire from a bushmaster a-r-15 rifle in newtown, connecticut. the rifle was originally commissioned by the u-s military.
