good morning and welcome to 10 news this morning. i'm allison kropff. and i'm mark rivera, in for ian. today kicks off an important weekend in the race for the white house. many of the republican candidates will finish up some last minute campaigning today in south carolina, while democratic presidential candidates hillary clinton and bernie sanders battle it out in the nevada caucus. both kick off saturday.

sarah hollenbeck is in the newsroom. sarah, one story you're following: a group is working to get republican ted cruz off the ballot. yes, there are questions this morning about cruz's citizenship. a chicago judge will hear arguments today from an illinois voter who argues because cruz is not a "natural- born citizen" so he isn't eligible to be president. you won't be surprised who kicked all this off. gop rival donald trump. lawrence joyce, an illinois voter, is challenging cruz's right to be president after trump unvieled that cruz was actully born in canada. but cruz argues he is a natural-born citizen since his mother is american- born. as we mentioned... south carolina's primary is tomorrow for republicans. democrats will go to the polls a week later. the outcome could further widdle down the 2016 presidential candidate field some candidates like john kasich are feeling more

here's what i'm digging into next-- hilary clinton holds an 8 point lead over bernie sanders nationally but the two are neck and neck in navada. i'm digging into this right now: what are those two doing to stand out? mark.... happening today, thousands will pay final respects to supreme court justice antonin scalia. president obama and the first lady will remember the justice as his body lies in repose in the great hall of the supreme court. the president has faced criticism from the right for not planning to attend scalia's funeral tomorrow.

was found dead in his room at a luxury hunting ranch in texas over the weekend. both scalia's father and son will lead his funeral mass tomorrow at the basilica of the national shrine in d- c. vice president joe biden and jill biden will attend in place of president obama. this woman, who is accused of hitting and killing a tow truck driver on the howard frankland bridge, will be in court this morning. allison huffman will face a hillsborough county judge after being held in pinellas county, which is where she was arrested earlier this week. roger perez borroto was hit and killed early monday morning. the florida highway patrol says huffman admitted she was the one behind the wheel and knew she hit someone but was too scared to stop. thanks to a new government proposal, you could soon see a drop in your cable bill. 10news reporter emerald morrow is live outside our 10news studios. emerald, the federal communications commission says you pay too much for those set-top boxes you get from your cable company. yeah, that's right and if you check your cable bill, you'll see where you're paying every

are it adds up to more than 200 dollars a year...and the fcc just doesn't think that's fair. - and not just because you have to pay for it...but because you're forced to pay for it without having any other options - the fcc says this allows cable companies to have a monopoly on those boxes... - and that's why they voted yesterday to start on a proposal that would allow other developers to create the boxes and even apps to help you manage all your cable video needs, and then you can choose whether or not you want to get one from your cable company or from somewhere else...possibly at a lower price. - and if you own a streaming device like apple tv or roku...i'm looking into how this could also affect you - i'm working on that now and will have more in the next half hour. - live in st. pete, em 10news, wtsp. new this morning, the f-a-a is investigating a plane crash in north carolina that killed the pilot. it happened at about 7:00 thursday night in marshville. several agencies responded.

have been released other than the small plane was found in a wooded area where there wasn't much around. the pilot's name hasn't been released. was a middle-aged man. video out of honolulu, hawaii. five people were hurt, one critically when a helicopter crashed into the water in pearl harbor on thursday. several people saw the crash that happened close to the u-s-s arizona memorial and ran into the water to rescue people on board. federal investigators are looking into what caused the crash. one neighborhood in arizona has a bug problem too big for fly swatters.. they say these

swarming their homes so badly, they can't go outside at night. the neighborhood sits by a recharge facility where water is supposed to go back into the ground, but lately they've had a lot of standing water. with temperatures warmer than normal, there has been a spike in the midge fly population. the city has started a fogging process three times a week.. the most allowed by the e-p-a. a bill advancing through the florida legislature would give regulators more power when it comes to state parks. that means lawmakers could repurpose preserved parks for recreation like hunting, grazing, tree farming and r-v camping. our partners at the tampa bay times are reporting some environmentalists say it gives regulators too much power over the land. the bill now heads to the state senate. right now,

temperatures from a warm spell are hitting much of the southern plains. this is video from oklahoma where grass fires were sparked by those high temperatures. the national weather service says the heat was strongest thursday in texas, oklahoma, kansas, and new mexico. get this, temperatures in kansas were 30 to 35 degrees above normal for this time of year. temperatures are expected to be a little cooler today, but still above normal. time to rev up those engines! the daytona 500 is this sunday! the race kicks off the 2016 nascar season. 40 drivers will compete at the daytona international speedway.. starting at 1 p-m. chase elliott and matt kenseth are in the first and second positions. if you go to bed may want to hit the hay a little earlier. the number of hours of sleep experts say you should be getting each night. but first, tumbleweed takedown. many in australia frustrated as they fight the invasion. spring training

we're putting the news back in the morning. here's a look at headlines around the nation and the world in 60 seconds. attorneys for the former subway pitchman jared fogle have until today to file an appeal for his 15 year prison sentence. fogle pleaded guilty to one count of disturbing and receiving child porn and traveling to engage in illicit sexual contact with a child. the 15 year sentence is longer than what prosecutors have been asking for. today, ethan couch, known as the 'affluenza teen'

transferred to an adult court today after a hearing. couch, who used his affluent upbringing as a defense for killing four people in a 2013 drunk driving crash was 16 years old at the time. if moved to an adult court, he could face 120 years in jail for violating his probation. today, virgin galactic will roll out its latest passenger spaceship. they'll unveil it at the mojave air and space port in the california dessert. the new spacecraft will take the place of the one that crashed in october of 2014, killing the co-pilot and hurting the pilot. this spacecraft will undergo extensive testing for being manned torrential rains in peru are causing dangerous mudslides. at least 90 homes have been destroyed and more than 300 people have been displaced. they're cut off from accessing major roads because of falling trees and rocks. army soldiers and helicopters had to rescue 45 people who were hurt. others have had to cross rivers to get help. take a look at this video out of australia! homes
