a look at the weather and what we're facing here in sosoh florida. good morning everyone. welcome to nbc 6 south florida today. it's saturday, february 13. i'm sharon lawson. it's aittle cool this morning but maybe peeling off the layers as you step further into the day. we'll start with your first alert forecast with erika delgado. >> we were in the 50s pretty much across the board. kendall, you were in the upper 40s. with the sunshine in place, we're already seeing temperatures in the mid 60s. 60 in miami, 64 in ft. lauderdale. 63 in oak lapped park. that goes for the homestead area as well. we were this the 40s d 50s early this morning. still seeing 40s and 50s across the panhandle. if your long weekend keeps you to the north, keep it in mind. have the jackets handy because

least throughout the morning hours. good ne is we're seeing dry conditions across the board. live first alert radar looking good from ft. lauderdale down into keys if that's where your weekend is taking you. firsrsalererforecast, calling for a cool start to the day, you may need a jacket throughout the morning hours. we will see a few clouds throughout the late morning ours associated with a cold front that's moving through. late they are afternoon we're expecting temperatures to be closer to average. we will be in the 70s, sharon. erika, thank you. this morning we continue to follow breaking news out of little havana where a teen is in the hospital after a shooting. near residents say they heaa about eight shots go off. witnesses say the victim is a 16-year-old boy who was shot in the leg. they say he was walking with friends around the area when a man started shooting at them. >> i really didn't see anything. all i saw was the shots, i heard

all the shots on the walls and stuff. >> we're told the shootetook off in a car. stay with nbc 6 for the latest updates on this breaking news story. this morning police are investigating a deadly crash in north lauderdale. we brought you this as breaking news last night. bso said a total of thre cars and four passengers were involved. a final meal child one of the cars was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. the mother was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. police are still investigating is fatal accident. >> this is still early on in the investigation. at this point our detectives do not believe that alcohol or speed were factors that resuled with this incident. >> stay tuned to nbc 6for more updates. a barrage of bullets once again flying in the streets of miami gardens, all within close roximity to schools. three miami gardens schools on llkdown yesterday as shots rang

they last for decades or senthorrys. it doesn't mean the churches are uniting or backing down from diverging doctrines, but it does mean they can celebrate a new bond. in havana, cuba, julia bagg, nbc 6 news. >> recovery crews have found the bodies of two people that crashed in a plane in the gulf of mexico. authorities say the victim was from texas. the pilot was 67. the faa is investigating what caused the plane to go down. a show of support for a miami gardede police officer. several of david starling's colleagues in court yesterday as the man accused of trying to take his life pleaded not guilty. david mejia wasn't in the room. his attoey filed the plea on his behalf. police say he shot starling in the leg for no reason as the cop sat in his patrol car and fired more rounds at other officers as they chased him. starling still hasn't returned to work, but his friends say he's doing much better. broward county sheriff's

florida polls show trump 20 points ahead of the next-closest challenger, ted cruz. trump and his rival republicans will be in south carolina tomorrowowor their last debate before that state's republican primary on february 20th. they say it's not nice to not make good on a promise. republican presidential candidates donald trump, ted cruz and marco rubio have failed to release their tax returns despite promises to do so. hillary clinton and jeb bush have already disclosed years' worth of their tax returns. there's no legal requirement to share tax returns with the public, but every major party nominee has done so since 1976. it's not just the republicaning infighting. two days after their debates in milwaukee, the democratic candidates were back on the campaign trail. yesterday in south carolina, hillary clinton attacked sanders for his criticism of president obama and the affordable care act. sanders voted for the act, but

the midwest already seeing temperatures below zero. single digits pretty much across the board. all that cold air from canada will continue to push towards the south as the weekend goes on. even we're feeling the chill in the air, at least we were earlier this morning. we were waking up into the 50s. we were in@the 40s earlier this morning in the kendall area. right now 64 there, 66 in miami and 65 degrees in the opa-locka and pembroke pines area. let's take a look at what we're dealing with as far as the winds are concerned. calm wind overnight, that together with the clear skies is what cooled us down overnight. right now we're dealing with a north to northwestwinds. expect it on the breezy side late they are afternoon bind a front that will be affecting us throughout the day today. in the meantime let's take a radar. dry conditions from broward county down to miami-dade. if you're in the keys watching, good morning to you. if your weekend is taking you to the keys, looking lovely.

sight. outside our first alert camera outside the westin diplomat in hollywood, beautiful start to the weekend. light winds from the northwest. clear skies, temperatures already warming up. already in the mid 60s. looking like for our forecast, warming into the 70s, seasonable temperatures is what we're expecting. plenty of sunshine. although late morning we could see a few clouds out there because of the front that is expected to swing on through. the bigger pictutu, dry, cold front moves through. even though the cold front is expected to move thrgh today giving us a few clouds, we will be dry. rain-free all day long. once the cold front does move through, high pressure across the nation's midsection. we'll continue to push further to the south. that's what's going to drag in the cold air from canada really cooling things down across the eassrn seaboard and the northeast. for us we alsosoill see cooler temperatures for the second half of the weekend. in the meantime, the main thing

how they helped a man from central florida finally reunited with his bestst friend. a heartwarming reunion thanks to local police. kevin young is a quadriplegic who lives in an assisted living facility withis pooch named poupee. but when young had surgery and a friend was watching the pu he slipped away. word got to police through facebook. they alerted every city employee to be on the lookout. an officer then spotted the dog on the street and brought him home. >> i couldn't be happier, because he's the closest thing to a child that i've got. >> young says he won't let the dog out of his sight again. if anything happens, he's thankful to have new friends in law enforcement. erika, speaking of man's be friend, who do you have over there? >> in today's pet of the week we

furry friend mrs. pots. >> i'll call her ms. pots. she's a 3-month-old terrier. she's sleeping in my shoulder. >> maybehe likes to cuddle. she will grow to probably a mid size at the most. she has the terrier in there. she does president want to show her little face. she's a cuddle bug, good with other dogs so far. great with people, as you can see. she's just been quiet. >> very flexible. >> she is. >> all about cuddling. >> if you want that little warm cuddle bug wwh you, she is definitely the pup for you. >> it's a long weekend, of course, president's weekend. it's also valentine's weekend. the perfect valentine right there. >> if you want that extra love, you'll certainly get it. >> absolutely. she's great.

weekend and apart from ms. pots here. >> we've been doing it for 18 years, walk pour the animals at boy front park. it's a one-mile stroll around bay front. you can come with a dog, without a dog. you can bring your morning coffee, walk around the whole bayfront and hopefully the weather will hold. >> i'm already working on it. >> there's going to be doggy contests, look-alike, kissing contests, an area for the kids. bounce houses, all this fun stuff. a petting area with the zoological association bringing in some pets for the kids. also for the top fund-raisers for this event, the top-top first prize is a flat screen tv, so that's extra motivation. >> that's great because you can watch videos of your new furry friend.

welcome back. imagine this, crushing poverty and having to learn english while suffering from a painful disease. most kids would use all that as an excuse for failure. a young man at corporal springs high uses his obstacles as motivation, inspiring everyone around him. he's definitely got swag. as education on 6 reporter ari odzer shows us, he's a student working at greatness. at 6'4" mervens val strides through coral springs high powered by brilliance. >> i feel like education is everything to me. >> reporter: driven by the desire to learn. >> maybe i can find a cure for cancer. maybe i can do something in that field that would benefit everybody else. that's my goal right now. >> reporter: mervens stands out among his peers for more than just being tall. >> we gave a presentation and it felt like we were being lectured by a professional. >> reporter: remember the kid you would go to with help for difficult classes? mervens is that kid. >> any question anybody has in class, they can come to him. >> it feels really good.

>> 3x squared. >> reporter: whatever the subject, mervens excels, a 4.7 gpa, doing it while suffering from kyphosis of the spine. it's caused by a genetic disorder. >> extremely painful. >> you have to deal with that every day? >> every single day, especially when i wake up in the morning. it feels like i don't want to go to school, but i have to because i love being here. >> reporter: mervens has another obstacle setting him apart from classmates, dire poverty. >> i've always had to try twice as hard as everybody else in school. i remember every single day i would have to go to the library to get a paper done on time while everybody else had internet at home. >> reporter: his teachers say he's the ultimate role model. >> he is special in every single way, from his academics to his personal character. everything he does, he wants everyone want to be more like him. >> i'm very optimistic now because i've been through so much. there's no way that i'm going to just give up now. >> reporter: no way.

factors that resulted with this incident. >> tragic situation. stay tuned to nbc 6 for more updates on that story. a barrage of bullets once again flying on the streets of miami gardens. again, the violence happening close to schools. nbc 6 reporter marissa bagg is in miami gardens with more. >> reporter: for third day in a row schools are rattledby gun violence. this time three miami gardens schools went on lockdown as shots rang out along northst 39th court and 190th street. >> it was a few shots, boom, boom, boom, boom, and then pow, pow, pow. i and i ran outside to see what was going on. >> reporter: gunfire came so close on wednesday and thursday, bullets hit both buildings while students were inside. no one was hurt, but local leaders want to make it stop. >> we're just trying to get our community to start speaking up

on, stothe shootings and make our young men, our young people understand how important it is for us to say it's got to end. it's got to stop today. >> you don't necessarily have to look at yourself as a snitch. you could also look at yourself as a community servant because you are doing a service to the community to get these bad guys off the streets. >> reporter: church pastors and city leaders from across miami-dade united outside carol city high school friday to pray for peace. >> now we come together to pray for the children -- >> reporter: this as authorities try to track down every single shooter involved. two teenagers are in custody for right hand side's shooting at carol city high, 19-year-old stanley ragin and 18-year-old cedric adams. concerned residents are calling for people to te police what they need to know before someone gets hurt. >> i'm sick and tired every time i turn on my tv, a child, student lost their life. it's now time for that to stop. >> reporter: no arrests have been made at the shooting near the elementary school in coconut

but there is a $3,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. miami gardens, marissa bagg, nbc 6 news. miami beach police fear an alleged killer could be back in south florida. miguel izaguirre has been evading police for two years. he's accused of fatally shooting max brody yn the head. the victim had been celebrating the new year in 2014 when he shell gas station. detectives say izaguirre was attempting to rob brody before he shot and killed him execution style. if you have information on where he might be, contact miami-dade crime stoppers at 305-471-tips. this morning an auto shop in oakland park is unrecognizable after a blazing fire. smoke was already coming out of

center by the time crews arrived on scene along northwest 42nd street. they caed in backup from other fire departments to help contain the blaze which caused flammable liquid tanks to explode. fortunately no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. the florida department of education released school grades for the 2014-2015 school year. south florida districts were among the top of the class. according to overall district grades both palm beach and monroe county received an a, while miami-dade and broward county received a b. in all there were 20 f schools in miami-dade. grades are from last academic school year. superintendent alberto carvalho says results are screwed. >> to make an a, you have to perform at this level. to make an a this year, the standards themself are different. the body of knowledge much more complex. >> carvalho also said his

flights. the deal will allow u.s. airlines to bid on routes for dozens of flights to the island nation. cuba now receives 10 to 15 daily charter flights from united states. resuming commercial flights would be the most important development in u.s.-cuba trade. flights are expected to begin operating by fall. it's an action-packed weekend for everyone in south florida. you have the miami boat show, art wynwood and the 53rd coconut grove arts show. >> the art festival kicks off at 10:00. vendors say they're getting an early start making sure everything insight their tents is just right for this three-day event. paintings, photography, digital art and more. the coconut grove arts festival is one of the nation's top

beach, what can you expect for welcome back. the coconut grove arts festival not the only event happening this weekend, there's also a big art walk and a boat show. first alert traffic reporter kelly blanco helping you maneuver all the traffic on what's shaping up to be a very busy weekend. >> this weekend will be packed with fun things to do here in south h orida. that means heavy traffic and road closures.

the miami international boat show at miami marine stadium will be causing delays on the rickenbacker causeway from u.s. 1 toirginia beach drive. plan ahead because there's virtually no parking. there will be free water taxis and shuttle buses from downtown miami, marlins park and other locations. the art wynwood will cause slowdowns on northeast 29th street in both directions. it will run for five days, all the way through monday. saturday the start of the 53rd coconut grove arts festival between aviation avenue and grand avenue. festivities run through monday, but road closures have already began today. if you choose to take i-95 southbound, follow u.s. 1 to 27th avenue. i recommend taking 836 west then 27th avenue south to the festival. don't forget nbc 6 will be@ there. you can catchall your favorite on-air personalities through the weekend.

alert radar. a beautiful start to the day. definitely want to take advantage and head out there because we're expecting plenty ofsunshine. take a look at our first alert camera outside the westin diplomat. people already lining up to spend the day out there. i don't blame them because it's expected to be a nice one here across south florida. first alert forecast calling for plenty of sunshine. late morning into the early afternoon hours, we could see a few moror clouds because of the front moving through. highs expected to reach into the midd70s. it will be a seasonable day here across much of south florida. right now there's a cold front headed our way. as you can see, no rain associated withhe front. as we continue to push towards the south this afternoon, it's expected to cross south florida but as a dry cold front. we won't be seeing any rain. once the coldront swings through, high pressure will settle in. this is the same system this will bring frigid temperatures

for us we will also feel a little chill in the air, especially tomorrow morning. temperatures a little cooler morrow than they are today. all the sunshine today, not a bad problem to have. uv index on the higher end of the scale. small crafts should exercise caution especially this afternoon as winds are expected to pick up later this afternoon from the northwest. because they will be out of the north, we won't be dealing with rip currents along the atlantic beaches. good news for those of us spend planning to spend the day out on the water. we will be dry all day, so we will not be needing the umbrellas. maybe grab a jacket for the morning hours and maybe at night, if you have evening plans, other than that, things are looking good, sharon. it looks like the next seven days, the only day we'll see showers will be monday night into tuesday. temperatures in the 70s, low 70s. you want to keep your valentine warm.
