right now nbc news projects hillary clinton beating bernie sanders for a nevada win. we're awaiting her victory speech in a moment. still an hour left in the south carolina gop primary. donald trump and ted cruz are leading the field in the palmetto state where there are 50 republican delegates up for the taking. good evening, i'm keith jones. voters began heading to the polls bright and early 7:00 this morning. voters in south carolina have chosen virtually every gop nominee since 1980. and the candidates know this. c 6 is everywhere. political reporter steve litz is live in south carolina. >> reporter: good evening. poll workers are reporting a steady stream of voters all day, and keith, that's a saturday, people need not worry about missing work or long lines. candidates have blanketed the
today voters are responding. the first in the nation's southe primary is just hours away now with some south carolinians very interested. >> we care a lot about foreign policy, about education. >> reporter: others are completely disengaged. >> it's just something i have no time to do. >> reporter: candidates spent the day campaigning outside the city of columbia. donald trump, the frontrunner, told a crowd in gaffney his closest competitor, ted cruz, is not a fit candidate. >> he's not a very good talker. you can't have a conversation with him. "i will do this and i will do that." that."
while stumping in myrtle beach. >> it easy to say make america great again. you have to@ understand what made america great in the first place. >> reporter: the candidates spending almost two weeks trying to win over southern primimy voters. meantime the democrats are spending their weekend in neneda, caucusing. hillary clinton is looking for a big win, enjoying a slim lead over bernie sanders after she took a narrow victory in iowa and suffered a big loss in new hampshire. in talking with poll workers today, they report about a 40% turnout, which they say is about average for a gop primary. about an hour left until the polls close. returns due in shortly after this. steve litz, nbc 6 new >> steve, thank you, sir. right now the nevada caucuses are under way. with 76% rerting, hillary clinton is the projected winner with 52%.

nbc 6's stephanie bertiti is live at the scene. >> reporter: keith, invfstigators, police all over this area tonight, working a crime scene that was established just hours ago. people who live around here are angry because the victim of what we just learned from police was a drive-by shooting of a child just 6 years old, that child will not see his 7th birthday, we were just informed that child died shortly after being shot. i want to give you a look at the scene right now. detectives working , talking to witnesses, trying to find out whothe intended target might have been. that has not been established yet. that's the latest information we have from police. now, the leader, one of the leaders of the miami-dade police department came out here so upset but what we saw here tonight. another instance of gunun violence where the victim is an innocent child.
on the scene and got cpr, was able to maintain him alive for a little while. when he arrived at the hospital, he did die. >> clearly he was an innocent target. i'm angry. our officers are angry. the community behind me is angry. they're apgry enough that maybe they will provide information that will lead to the arrest of the individuals. >> reporter: back here live, while police are working here, we've learned that the department has pulled resources, officers from all over the county, focused now on the north end, working to find whaha they've identified at this point, some preliminary information in the investigation in terms of the suspects, three black males, according to police, driving in a black vehicle, a four-douror sedan. this information is crucial because investigates want anybody out this who might have seen that vehicle or seen the suspect or know anythingng about what happened here to call them. the crimestoppers number is at
i'm reporting live in northwest miami-dade, stephanie bertini, nbc 6 news. facing a judge this morning after leaving her 6-year-old child home on an inside of a burning apartment. nbc 6 reporter bobby brooks joins us live from the jail >> reporter: keith, good evening. i can tell you this woman is pretty torn up about everything that has happened. she cried almost uncontrollably thtough her bond court hearing. but that doesn't change the fact that law enforcement thinks her 6-year-old daughter almost died because of her actions. playing with her minnie mouse doll. that's what a 6-year-old should be doing. but this little girl has had quite the last few days. today she finally leas nicholas children's hospital with her grgndma, we're told in good spirits. >> she's perfectly fine. and she's going to be able to just -- she misses her mom. she asks for her a lot.
now in jail, at her bond hearing we found she won't be seeing her daughter for quite a while. >> you're to have no contact with the min in this case, as well as have any contact with your mother, who is the temporary guardian. >> reporter: the reason why she's in tears and jaililoday, the little girl was almost killed this past thursday. a fire broke out at her apartment at th versailless gardens apartment complex. witnesses watched the mother run out, leaving her 6-year-old daughter trapped inside. according to her mom, it wasn't that simple. she says her daughter started cooking and things rapidly got out of control. >> mdaughter does not hear my granddaughter's voice. she just went crazy and took off, thinking my granddaughter was dead.
daughter has been suffering from a mental illness that contributed to her decisionmaking. >> my granddaughter was diagnosed with postpartum depression. >> reporter: firefighters broke through a window and got the girl out. despite what witnesses say, sh defends her daughter. >> my daughter adores her daughter. >> reporter: back out live here, the mother has been arged with child neglect with great bodily harm. her 6-year-old daughter will be staying with grandma for now. live outside the jail, bobby brooks, n n 6 news. now to a story you saw first on 6. a south florida woman in a coma tonight after her family says she was attacked by a roommate that she recently found on craigslist. the 23-year-old was attacked on valentine's day. nbc 6 reporter erica glover reports. >> reporter: these pictures a a too much for this mom to handle. >> i'm still in shock, i can't
do thisto somebody. >> reporter: she was living in this downtown miami apartment when she found this roommate on craigslist two weeks ago. >> my daughter's face is all cut off, like he was going to take her face off. and she has, you know, brain injury. nobody knows what the prognosis is. >> reporter: a week after 35-year-old bryon mitchell moved in, her family says, he attcked her. it was her 23rd birthday. >> she was scars around her eyelids, her lips. she has slashes all down her head. >> reporte she's been in a coma since sunday's attack. he claims self-defense, telling officers danielle came after him with a knife. but the cuts to her face and head suggest otherwise. >> we hold on to hope. it's in god's hands. >> reporter: this morning, the family is hoping others will
>> bring attention to this and try to raise some type of awareness for other people to be careful. >> reporter: erica glover, nbc 6 news. a south florida teacher charged with having sex with a student is out of jail tonight with a gps monitor. the palmetto high engli teacher was arrested after an investigation revealed he allegedly had sex with a 12th grader on at least two occasions inside theclassroom after school. he is ordered to stay away if palmetto hh and his alleged victim. continuing coverage now of president obama's plannnn trip to cuba. he discussed his upcoming trip, a visit that will further advance th progress made since he announced the new chapter of u.s./cuba relations more than a year ago. >> my guess is it will be an opportunity to keep moving forward. i'll mee with president castro

tried to climb into a locked office. the former pitchman for subway asking for less time behind bars. this after he was sentenced to more than 15 years for child sex crimes. jared fogle's attorney asked a federal appeals court on friday to shorten his prison sentence, arguing the district court judge abused her authority by giving fogle a sentence longer than prosecutors agreed to pursue as part of his plea deal. he pleaded guilty in november to paying for child porn. prosecutors as part of a deal agreed not to push for more than a seven-year sentence. the judge said the deal was unreasonable. we're learning more about el faro, a ship that sailed into then-category 4 storm hurricane joaquin.

with those east winds, only a 10% chance of rain each hour on the hour between now and 1:00 a.m. 68 as c col as we get over the next several hours. if you like temps in the upper 60s to low 70s, you are certainly loving the next several hours. seven-day forecast, lighter winds into sunday. turning muggy out there. thunderstorm threat as we go tuesday into wednesday. some occasions, possibly some strong storms overnight wednesday into thursday morning. it all depends on the exact timing of all this. certainly cooler f fiday into saturday with upper 60s to about 70. some indications as well, could be talking about lows in the
