(lord dunmore) narrator: despite the many obvious reasons to serve under the british, the negro's primary loyalty was to the principle of liberty. a slave poet named phillis wheatley expressed those sentiments in a letter, which was published in the connecticut gazette in 1774. quote from letter: "in every human breast, god has implanted a principle, which we call love of freedom; it is impatient of oppression, and pants for deliverance." it was in portsmouth, virginia. this is where individuals would have been chained in public to have their backs struck with some kind of a leather strap as a public punishment for whatever crime their owners had deemed they were guilty of. and virginia, while it was not necessarily a place that had the highest population of enslaved laborers in the nation, it was the hub for the domestic slave trade. so richmond, for example, was home to numerous auction houses in which a person who was hoping to buy enslaved laborers would actually come to richmond with a specific purpose in mind of buying these people to then take back to their respective plantations. so the artifacts that we have in this section focus on that industry. richmond actually profited very much in the mid 1800s from the domestic slave trade. we have a cain here that was owned by a slave auctioneer. this is a person that would have run the auction. the collar would have been worn by an enslaved virginian. these pieces highlight the inhumanity of an inst

and the signatures that have the given name virginia. >> virginia's family told investigators that virginia suffered from epilepsy as a child. epilepsy is a neurological condition in which uncontrolled electrical charges from the cerebral cortex can result in violent seizures and convulsions. according to her writings, virginia had stopped taking her epilepsy medication years earlier, relying instead on her faith in god to heal her. the defense consulted a neurologist. he said the petechial hemorrhages around virginia's eyes were consistent with what is called sudden death epilepsy. the doctor said that sudden death epilepsy occurs in patients who have stopped taking their medication, or haven't been properly diagnosed. >> i've had other patients that are sleeping with their spouses, and they wake up and find their spouse is dead. so people may or may not witness the seizure, and there are some of us who are not certain that all of these deaths are associated with seizure per se. but may have some epileptic activity in the brain that changes heart rhythms or changes respiratory mechanisms s

from jefferson's point if these are external authorities have a tie to virginia for virginia's convenience. so if he famously said also in the declaration of independence, if the people decide that the foreign government, he actually called them our foreign government at one point, if the foreign government is not serving the purposes we hoped that we are entitled to replace it. he said that about the federal government, he had this idea throughout. people familiar with his political career will know there were times when jefferson nearly led his political party into a violent resistance to federal policy, the most famous instance came in 1790 when he organized resistance to what i think it was violent resistance to the -- act of 1978. his vision of this relationship between the central authority in virginia, i don't think changed at all. if you compare the argument he made in 1825 in his argument madison which covered resolutions he had written that he wanted the general assembly to adopt if you compare those resolutions to what he said about the british king and parliament 1774 you'll no

virginia's way of life, period. so it turns out he's the profite prophet of what it would be rather than jefferson and his letters are full of i'm trying to save the university from jefferson so he is pulling something over on jefferson that he is going about writing to his friends and his brother about don't worry about their ideas of the future. or a very pious christian and he's one of the leaders of the university's writing from the inside to take it over and doesn't get anywhere until jefferson dies. it's going to be a real influence over what the university will become in the 1830s and 40s and 50s. you have to go to the microphone or i can repeat it for you. >> article in the "washington post" mentioned that there is another book by one of your former colleagues on the same ground but what i learned if i read those books flex >> you should read my book. virginia women were very vocal about their desire to have the right to vote, but in many cases, virginia women who supported suffrage were in the minority. virginia was not a state that was very enthusiastically behind the movement towards women's right to vote. virginia, in fact, doesn't ratify the 19th amendment until 1952. so despite the fact it passes nationally in 1920, virginia doesn't decide that they want to ratify that amendment until 1952. the notion that virginia women are genteel southern ladies who don't want to be troubled with politics sort of reinforces this notion that suffrage for women isn't an important virginian priority but there are women like, for example, norra houston who wore the dress we see here jn rou generously on loan to us from the valentine museum, she would have been able to counter that argument with quite a great number of arguments of her own. that's part of why pamphlets like the ones we have on display here explaining the reasons for which women should have been given the right to vote were such essential tools for the early 20th century suffragist
