our senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is joining us from clinton primary headquarters in new hampshire. what kind of results do they say they're realistically expecting tonight? >> reporter: well, wolf, ever since she stepped foot in the state of new hampshire some eight days ago after iowa, they have been lowering expectations every single day. never mind all the history that the clinton campaign, the clinton family has in this state. of course 1992 is a pivotal moment and 2008 was a pivotal moment for her. they are saying they can't win. when you talk to them privately and some of her supporters, they believe she can win. the polls are all over the board. because of the independent voters we've been talking to and about all day long, some who are playing in the republican primary, they simply don't know but this is much closer than the 25 points would suggest. i am told that most sides believe this is within five points or so and that is not a lot of space or so. if they get out their vote which they have been trying to do, it could be much tighter than some of our suggesti

that hard that we're even discussing this is, i think, a measure of how unfortunately the ranker in washington has prevented us from getting basic work done. this would be a good moment for us to rise above that. i understand the stakes. i understand the pressure that republican senators are undoubtedly under. the fact of the matter is that what the issue here is, is that the court is now divided on many issues. this would be a deciding vote. and there are a lot of republican senators who are going to be under a lot of pressure from special interests and various constituencies and many of their voters to not let any nominee go through, no matter who i nominate. but that's not how the system's supposed to work. that's not how our democracy's supposed to work. i intend to nominate in due time a very well-qualified candidate, if we are following basic precedent that nominee will be presented before the committees, the vote will be taken, and ultimately they'll be confirmed. justice kennedy, when nominated by ronald reagan and reagan's last year in office, a vote was taken, and there are a whole l

cnn's senior washington corner joe johns joining me from kl columbia. do you have a sense what we're expecting to hear, what secretary clinton is trying to achieve tonight? >> reporter: well, let me you some sense of what's going on here, which is the warm-up event before she goes over to the law school however in columbia, south carolina, to do that later town hall on cnn. this is a gun policy event in an african-american church in columbia, south carolina. she's appearing here with a group of mothers who have been traversing south carolina in support of hillary clinton. those mothers happen to be the mothers of victims of controversial shootings, including the mother of trayvon martin. the campaign thinks that gun policy's a good issue for her, polling bears that out. the latest cnn/orc poll suggesting she's 20 points up on bernie sanders, 5-35. when it cops to gun policy as far as african-americans are concerned here in the state. and make no mistake about it, this is an opportunity for her to tie herself to the legacy of president obama, he said gun

let's go to our senior washington correspondent, jeff zeleny who's following the democratic race. i assume this is good news for the hillary clinton's campaign. she's not the first secretary of state to have classified information in her private e-mail account. >> reporter: no question, wolf. this is something the clinton campaign has been point out all along. she said she did nothing that different from previous secretaries of state. she did set up her own e-mail server, that's slightly different, but she said none of her information was classified at the time. but while that's sort of on the back burner now, hillary clinton has another fight on her hands here in new hampshire with bernie sanders. the ballottle lines are drawn f hillary clinton and bernie sanders. >> i was somewhat amused today that senator sanders has set himself up to be the gatekeeper on who's a progressive. >> i do not know any progressive who has a super pac and takes $15 million from wall street. >> reporter: the cnn presidential town hall shined new light on their competing visions for the democratic party

one it's the anger and frustration at washington. and two the person you are seeing on tv that seems to be as mad as you are the most is donald trump. and that's the reason why he has continued the success. >> tara you want to get in there? >> i absolutely do. as a trump supporter, we have been called angry by the media. and i just did this same thing. it's not the fact that we walk around being angry people. it's not the fact that the fact we walk around being uneducated people. we are very educated and some of the smartest folks that i know didn't get a college degree. the fact of the matter is we finally have a voice. we have been a silent majority for so long in this country, donald trump is giving us a voice. we are not standing out in the street poppy, streaming at the top of our lungs that we're miss pissed off and we're not going to take it anymore. we are simply saying washington needs a choke hold on sit he have. -- on it set. et cetera a out of control. >> tara let me follow that up with this question for you. donald trump

i think there is a lot of hand ringing in washington. the reality is much of washington brought this on. people are very mad at the leadership. i think in both parties frankly. but trump has had the benefit of having such a crowded field, it's disburpersed a lot of the i think the angryist voices have gone towards him. as long as his field stays as large as it is, that i a benefit to trump. >> washington is a little irked some people aren't dropping to perhaps coalesce behind one. alex, to you, sir, great piece with maggie and jonathan in "the times." in your reporting, you mention senate majority leader mitch mcconnell laying out the plan that would have lawmakers break with trump in a general election? tell me about that. >> what they're envisioning now is a scenario where they're struck with trump and it becomes very clear maybe even before the convention in july that he's a nonstarter and he's going to lose badly. what that means is you have a number of vulnerable republican senators up for re-election who suddenly have to choose do

it's not going to do anything to solve the problems we have in washington, d.c., fixing broken systems. jeb bush plans to do all that. i think there's a real contrast you're going to see between jeb bush in south carolina and trump and the other candidates. the man who's ready to be commander in chief. i mean, you know, trump seems to have become the republican michael moore and i'm not sure that's going to play well in being is is being when we have a significant veterans population. people are really looking closely to see who can sit behind the desk in the oval office and fix the problems that face us. and the reason jeb bush is such a credible candidate is because he has done it in florida. that's why his record's important. that's why experience is important. you can make a lot of promises but you've got to be able to achieve things. and he's got not only the panels to fix these problems and really break apart these industrial age -- >> back on president obabush, w we see him tonight, does he directly address these attacks being thrown out over and over from mr. trump? >> well, if

"washington post," i have to tell you, i have respect for jeff bezos but he bought "the washington post" to have political influence and i got to tell you, we have a different country then we used to have. he owns amazon. he wants political influence so that amazon will benefit from it. that's not right. and believe me, if i become president, oh, do they have problems. they're going to have such problems. one of the things i'm going to do, and this is only going to make it tougher for me, and i've never said this before, but one of the things i'm going to do if i win, and i hope we do and we're certainly leading. i'm going to open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and mohorrib and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money. we're going to open up those libel laws. so when "the new york times" writes a hit piece which is a total disgrace or when the "washington post" which is there for other reasons writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money instead of having no chance of winning because they're totally protected. you see, with me, they're not prot

he went to the march on washington. i remember watching that on television when i was in i believe the fifth grade. that's how long bernie's commitment to civil rights has been and to social justice. >> so you were young. he was a smidge older. point being, this has been a thread through his lose. for you, mark lamont hill, especially when you look at the numbers aamerican african-american voters in south carolina, why do you think he's not polling higher? >> i think there are a few reasons. the clintons have a very strong connection to african-american communities. despite the fact that bill clinton undermined black prosperity during the '90s. many black people still consider him the original first black president. because of that, they feel connected to the clintons as a proxy. one where we can be somewhat critical of bernie sanders. early on, bernie sanders responded to calls from black lives matter movement by saying, hey, i marched with king. or hey, my economic justice program will lead to racial justice. in a sen

also with us, todd gillman, the washington burreau chief for th dallas morning news. this back and forth over donald trump's taxes, where the main aggressor is one willard mitt romney, the 2012 republican nominee. i suppose there are two questions. you've been on the record with us saying you think at some point donald trump will be vetted more than he has in the past and this may be one of those areas that will take place in. be that as it may, is willard mitt romney the right messenger for this attack? >> it certainly does show he is the embodiment of the establishment. for him to compae out, i think it's unprecedented to come out like this. but where's his evidence? what does he know that we don't know? interesting to hear. >> impressive for the man who was the republican nominee. i should note that donald trump announced mitt romney four years ago and in case anyone forgets, mitt romney went hat in hand to trump towers to essentially beg for that endorsement. >> we will eventually see his tax return but we will not see him in march. >> all right, amanda carpenter,

the march on washington. the march from selma to montgomery and correct edirecte voter education project for six years. but i met hillary clinton. i met president clinton. >> he says he never saw bernie sanders. but he, you know, you heard what he just said at the end there. does she use that tonight? >> i don't know she has to use it. it's such a powerful moment for her without her touching it. sort of speaks for herself. that is, you know, john lewis is total stalwart of the civil rights movement, he's got tons of credibility on this issue obviously, and if he is saying i never saw this guy, i never met bernie sanders, which isn't to say bernie sanders did not fight for civil rights in his own way at the university of chicago or at the march on washington, but if john lewis is sort of dissing sanders and saying, hey, let's be honest here, and by the way, i really did know the clintons, that is damning in and of itself. bernie sanders, african-american supporters of his own. but that is an ad right there in

let's go straight to our chief political analyst gloria borger in washington. so it is officially official, you know, from the scene of iowa, hillary clinton got it, closest of all calls there. your response in terms of how she takes it moves forward? >> she's happier to win than not win, no matter by how small a margin. however, there's a lot of concerns you have to have if you're in the clinton campaign coming out of this small margin of victory. you know, when you look at entrance polls ewere talking about into wee hours last night a few things pop out at me. one is the fact that bernie sanders continued to get those younger voters, including younger women voters. the questions of trust that seem to plague her, and most importantly, i think, this question of who is the candidate that best understands my needs, right? and bernie sanders, by 3-1 margin, beats her on that. and so, i think as you look towards new hampshire, i think she's got to warm herself up a little bit that way in order to compete with him on those issues that really go go to your kind of co

he joins me from washington. welcome. >> thank you so much. yes, it's a big surprise to me, voters, my friends down here, bernie sanders does matter. >> you followed him for a couple of years. little did you know perhaps he would have such the following leading into this presidential nomination contest. let me begin with one point you make in your book. questioning what kind of socialist he is. you liken him more to donald trump than fellow democrats. tell me why. >> he's more a populist in american history than he is a socialist. i think of teddy roosevelt. i think of la guardia. they always championed the little guy against the wealthy. it was teddy roosevelt who was the big bank buster at the turn of the century. as weird as it might seem, donald trump is also somewhat of a populist. sanders is wealthy. trump says the little guy is getting pushed around too much by, i don't know, immigrants, not getting a fair shake. it's the not getting a fair shake that brings then together. >> what about beshy sanders in the '50s and 60s. he was talking

brianna keilar in las vegas, also marissa rosenberg, a culture columnist for "the washington post" and a supporter of clinton. bri, let me begin with you. inch nevada, a very different electorate. we saw how the polls changed in the past few months. what's she doing on the trail to get those votes? >> this is a more diverse state, mainly due to a sizable hispanic majority which hillary clinton does pretty well with. from the get-go, coming out here last spring, for her first campaign event in nevada, she focused very much on immigration. we're seeing that today with a new ad she's out with airing here in nevada. where she's talking about the fear of deportations. here's part of it. >> my parents, they have a letter of deportation. i'm scared for them because they might be deported. >> come here. [ applause ] i'm going to do everything i can so you don't have to be scared. >> that was an event that happened here in nevada last weekend. you also see bernie sanders trying to cut into hillary clinton's support with hispanic voters. talking about how he in favor of a pathway to citizenship

cnn senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is with us. traveling with the bernie sanders campaign in nevada. let's just get reaction first from the sanders camp. this is key. and sanders really needs the minority vote. >> there's no doubt about it, poppy. the sanders campaign would have been happy to have this endorsement. but they were not expecting it. jim clyburn is an esteemed member of congress which also puts him in the establishment cam and bernie sanders is running against the establishment so, you know, the advisers on the sanders campaign say look, they certainly respect the congressman, but they believe endorsements aren't what's driving this election. and they may be right, i mean, i remember so well in 2008 where james clyburn declined to get into this race at all. it created such internal fight in the clinton campaign. bill clinton called the morning after the south carolina primary, screaming at james clybu clyburn. he writes about it in his book that came out a couple years ago and said, you know, he accused him of tipping
