our senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is joining us from clinton primary headquarters in new hampshire. what kind of results do they say they're realistically expecting tonight? >> reporter: well, wolf, ever since she stepped foot in the state of new hampshire some eight days ago after iowa, they have been lowering expectations every single day. never mind all the history that the clinton campaign, the clinton family has in this state. of course 1992 is a pivotal moment and 2008 was a pivotal moment for her. they are saying they can't win. when you talk to them privately and some of her supporters, they believe she can win. the polls are all over the board. because of the independent voters we've been talking to and about all day long, some who are playing in the republican primary, they simply don't know but this is much closer than the 25 points would suggest. i am told that most sides believe this is within five points or so and that is not a lot of space or so. if they get out their vote which they have been trying to do, it could be much tighter than some of our suggesti

[ applause ] and the first place that i would take that skill is the department of veterans affairs. you all have seen the atrocious waiting lists that veterans coming home don't get care. last year the department came up with a brilliant idea. we'll give out bonuses. $142 million of bonuses last year went out for all sorts of things, including reducing the waiting list which sounds like a worthy objective. the fact is the waiting lists were reduced. veterans didn't get care, and vets died. they died. and the simple fact is only three people have been fired. heads will roll in the department of veterans affairs when i'm president of the united states. chris christie was frustrated at the republican establishment in washington, d.c. and the deep pocket of donors in new york who did not get behind him and went to marco rubio trying to, what he thought was gaming the same. chris christie joining trump right now is actually not too surprising. i also heard he is not that close to john kasich as much as we've been saying that. it made sense for him to go to donald trump. >> two sitting governors and christie decided to go with the billionaire businessman. ron, was today's endorsement just another hit for the republican establishment as it's called? at some point do they need to accept the idea of trump becoming the nominee? >> i think the republican establishment, they continue to be divided on this question. precisely on the point that chris christie raised. whether donald trump is their strongest candidate in november. donald trump embodies one-half of what's been a republican civil war about how you win back the white house after they've lost the popular vote in five of the past six elections. one school of though

that hard that we're even discussing this is, i think, a measure of how unfortunately the ranker in washington has prevented us from getting basic work done. this would be a good moment for us to rise above that. i understand the stakes. i understand the pressure that republican senators are undoubtedly under. the fact of the matter is that what the issue here is, is that the court is now divided on many issues. this would be a deciding vote. and there are a lot of republican senators who are going to be under a lot of pressure from special interests and various constituencies and many of their voters to not let any nominee go through, no matter who i nominate. but that's not how the system's supposed to work. that's not how our democracy's supposed to work. i intend to nominate in due time a very well-qualified candidate, if we are following basic precedent that nominee will be presented before the committees, the vote will be taken, and ultimately they'll be confirmed. justice kennedy, when nominated by ronald reagan and reagan's last year in office, a vote was taken, and there are a whole l

that's a rounding area in washington d.c. when we spend some $600 billion a year on defense alone, and i can tell you that certainly i'm a fiscal conservative. i want to make sure we're making the best financial decisions, but as we start to look at this, you know, what he didn't mention is that out of the people that have been released, we know that one is now an al qaeda leader in yemen and was actually in detention at gitmo. we need to close it, but we need to close it by bringing them to justice and having them go before a military tribunal. we've been sending millions of dollars on attorneys to defend them, and yet, here we are trying to make a political statement instead of really addressing the concern for all of this as americans. it is bipartisan. we do want to make sure that our homeland is secure. but i can tell you having been down there, we don't even let the military men and women who guard them have their real names on their fatigues for the potential of retribution from these hardened terrorists that are there

cnn's senior washington corner joe johns joining me from kl columbia. do you have a sense what we're expecting to hear, what secretary clinton is trying to achieve tonight? >> reporter: well, let me you some sense of what's going on here, which is the warm-up event before she goes over to the law school however in columbia, south carolina, to do that later town hall on cnn. this is a gun policy event in an african-american church in columbia, south carolina. she's appearing here with a group of mothers who have been traversing south carolina in support of hillary clinton. those mothers happen to be the mothers of victims of controversial shootings, including the mother of trayvon martin. the campaign thinks that gun policy's a good issue for her, polling bears that out. the latest cnn/orc poll suggesting she's 20 points up on bernie sanders, 5-35. when it cops to gun policy as far as african-americans are concerned here in the state. and make no mistake about it, this is an opportunity for her to tie herself to the legacy of president obama, he said gun

he spent a lot of time in washington. he's an establishment guy. but john kasich doesn't have the organization moving forward. he's limping out of here on fumes. he'll get a little bit of money, maybe, but you can't take on the juggernaut which is jeb bush. >> he doesn't have to win south carolina or even have a good showing because he may not do -- he's got to get to super tuesday, right? he's got to wait for the midwestern states which he'll probably do well in. >> john kasich gets to say to people, even those mad at him for spending medicaid, for sometimes a scolding the rest of the republican party for not being as compassionate as he is, head and heart is his big thing. he gets to say, look, you don't win ohio, you don't win the presidency, republican party. an ironic thing has happened. the establishment is in a car pile-up now and conservatives are trying to show they are not the wing of the party anymore. they are the base of the party. trump, cruz, outsiders placing -- cruz wins iowa, comes in second in new hampshire. it's an establishment

let's go to our senior washington correspondent, jeff zeleny who's following the democratic race. i assume this is good news for the hillary clinton's campaign. she's not the first secretary of state to have classified information in her private e-mail account. >> reporter: no question, wolf. this is something the clinton campaign has been point out all along. she said she did nothing that different from previous secretaries of state. she did set up her own e-mail server, that's slightly different, but she said none of her information was classified at the time. but while that's sort of on the back burner now, hillary clinton has another fight on her hands here in new hampshire with bernie sanders. the ballottle lines are drawn f hillary clinton and bernie sanders. >> i was somewhat amused today that senator sanders has set himself up to be the gatekeeper on who's a progressive. >> i do not know any progressive who has a super pac and takes $15 million from wall street. >> reporter: the cnn presidential town hall shined new light on their competing visions for the democratic party

they expected a different kind of senator when he got to washington. and when he came in as a key member of the gang of eight, reforming the immigration program in the united states, a lot of those people who supported him when he ran for the senate and made him a star felt betrayed. >> so where do you think he'll land on immigration when all is said and done? >> it's clear he wants to do something about immigration. it's a personal issue for him because he is not only from florida but he is from a family of imgramigrantimmigrants. i would expect him to talk a lot about securing border but also talk about improving the system for entry and exit with visas so that it's a more orderly system. the real pressure on him will be whether he will take a hard stand on a path to citizenship for the 11 million or 12 million people in the country undocumented. that is the tough question for him to answer, and it's the one that he eventually will be forced to answer. >> i'm sure you're right about that. manual, thank you so much for joining me this morning. >> stil

let's talk about that with a trump supporter and also with commentator for the washington examiner. thanks for being here, both of you. jason, why has mitt romney injected himself into this campaign? >> well, why not? he's concerned about his party, and the way that it's going. clearly not the direction that mitt romney wants this party to be going in. everything else has been tried against donald trump so far. why not come out and say that he should release his tax returns. maybe there is a bomb shell in there. he had the event in iowa. he skipped the debate and had an event in iowa. there's no evidence that he donated that money. why not try to get involved? >> we did talk to one very small veteran's group that did accept a donation from donald trump on that day. but they're smaller veterans groups across the country, not the big larger ones. i wanted to throw that out in fairness. why not just release -- why doesn't donald trump just release his tax returns and be done with it? if he has nothing to hide, what's the big deal? >> because donald trump is bucking the political rules.
