she joins us from washington. what are the latest details? >> reporter: we know justice scalia went to texas on friday for a hunting trip at a secluded rezorts. he had dinner on friday night. the ranch owner had been speaking to reporters and said scalia was entertaining and engaged throughout the dinner. around 9:00 p.m. he said he had a long week and wanted to get a good sleep. a separate source tells evan perez that scalia said he wasn't feeling well on friday. the next day the range owner checked on scalia because he didn't show up for breakfast and lunch and found him in bed lying in repose. the sheets weren't wrinkled, no signs of foul play. it appears he died in his sleep of natural causes and the family has reportedly requested for him not to have an autopsy. >> in terms of political fallout, a fight brewing over the successor between the white house and republicans. any timetable as to how it could play out? >> likely it will be within the next month we'll hear about a nomination based on previous nominations coming from president ob

that is the kind of leadership we now need in washington, d.c. i don't know about you, but i am tired of politicians that blame their predecessors. i have a personal feeling about this, just having watched it for a while. my pledge to you -- when i am president of the united states, i will not blame barack obama for a civil thing. the day i am's into office, it is on my watch. whatever it is. i talked to the washington post, done various interviews. but i can say all day that muslims unequivocally condemn terrorism, and somebody that is not muslim, i have very little legitimacy, apart from the data. it's important, but not as compelling as the genuine emotional fear and anger that i've seen from talking to mainstream muslim leaders. who i think are understandably concerned that there is a media motif of an angry muslim. you go on fox news and become angry, you only serve to further the stereotype among angry muslims. but there is anger that is anger about attacks on your religion. then there is anger, that is equally genuine, that is towards group like isis or dyess. -- or daesh. there has been a lot of understandable hesitation about whether that's a good idea. i think given what i've shown you today, the opportunity, the time has come for that type of corrective discourse. the majority of americans now have this conspiracy theory in their heads. you can simply throw facts at the problem. some recent research coming out of polit

so we're covering technology policy in washington, health care policy in washington, energy policy in washington. 15 different policy verticals where we try to bring that same sense of urgency and that same sense of swarming over the story probably a little less visible. the other thing we've learned, it's been a great surprise. even in this sort of speeded up era of digital news. the long form piece, the magazine piece that might go for 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 words, people will read that. they'll share it, they'll post it on facebook. it'll go viral. if it's good. there's very little appetite for a long thumb sucker. but if the piece is revelatory, it'll go as viral as any kind of sort of piece of daily shouting from the campaign trail. the original work is what gets a voice and gets an audience. host: with that approach, though, what do you do editorially to keep over the reporters who report? how do you keep things in shape that way when it comes to editorial oversight and content? >> well -- guest: well, we try to be a team. the best and most important factor, the editors. when we we

press: i had heard rumors around washington that he might be thinking about it. so i went to see him in his office, and i said what do i hear? he told me he was thinking about it. this was 2014. he was only thinking about it in the sense that he had realized that the only way people will seriously take you seriously or take your issue seriously as if you run for president. you can be a senator and give speeches, and nobody pays attention. if you are a presidential candidate, there is an are about -- there is some or about that. he felt of these progressive issues that he talks about should be front and center in this 2016 presidential primary. somebody had to do it. if somebody else did it, fine, but if nobody else did it he was thinking he might do it. the other person at the time they thought, would be elizabeth warren. if elizabeth warren had run, i'm pretty confident to think that bernie sanders would have never run. bernie: did he ask your opinion on whether he should run? mr. press at the first meeting, : i suggest, i said if you are really serious, what yo

it's not just making washington look dysfunctional. and actual -- it actually hurts the ability for the federal government to be more effective and efficient with tax dollars. look at the department of defense. if you have a continuing resolution instead of an actual d.o.d. appropriations bill signed into law, then they can actually do planning. you know, companies plan years in advance. a government agency should actually be laying out plans as well about how to best use taxpayer dollars. but if they don't know what their budget's going to look like until literally the day before it's about to take effect, it's real hard for them to do planning and a lot of times what they do is suspend contracts and then they have to start that contract back up again, even though they know that ultimately something's going to get worked out. they can't do long-term planning. and it costs even more money. to do the same thing, so it does lead to a less efficient government, to not have a functioning appropriations process. it's why we want passionatel

it's hard. >> al jazeera's mike viqueira joins us now from washington. the president went on to referring to having his hands on the nuclear codes. have you ever heard the president talk in those terms? >> no, i haven't, and i did think that was interesting, as well. he mentioned the nuclear codes, sending a 21-year-old into a firefight, a couple of other, making sure the banking system doesn't collapse. the president doesn't usually allude to all the pressures of the presidency and big job he has, partly probably because he doesn't want to inflate himself or appear somehow conceited in going about his daily duties. i thought that was rare and very interesting. it's interesting to hear the president reformulate his answer when it comes to donald trump and having a democratic successor in the white house. not long ago, he was asked if he thought a democratic would succeed him and being able to carry on policies and executive orders, as well as the statutes passed. he said he had confidence in the american people to make the right choice and choose a democ

every single time there's been an opening in the supreme court since washington the president has put forward someone to fill that seat. these are people who love the constitution. if the framers of the constitution wanted for the last year in the president for the president to be -- i'm a lame duck, i cannot nominate someone, it would be in the constitution. it's not in the constitution because we have one president at a time and that president has to do his or her job until the very last day. so the reality is this is the only president in the history of the republic that's being asked to wait. the longest it's ever taken is 120 days. they want this president to sit on his hands 340 days and refuse to fill a vacancy on the highest court in the land. it's ludicrous. he should do his job. they should do their job. >> nobody is saying the president can't submit a name and make a nomination. in fact, he's more than welcome to do any of that. they're saying he or she is not going to be confirmed as has been the case for the last 80 years. >> josh, aren't you playing a really scary roulet

i'm saying to myself, what is the biggest problem right now in washington? well, it's clearly the dysfunction in washington, the fact that they don't talk, they don't work together. very rarely does anything get done. the one person who has the independence and can be the change agent to actually get washington working again, it was very clear to me that that was donald trump. >> jeff, an endorsement like that actually moving the needle for him at all in new hampshire at this point? >> no, i don't believe so. i listened to senator smith, whom i met back in the reagan days and have enormous respect for. i'm sure he's going to disagree, but i just think that when you are involved, i mean, he was the -- scott brown was the nominee for the united states senate the last time around, surely he's got some folks in new hampshire that like him. so, yes, i would think. but the more important thing is, like president reagan, who brought in conservatives and moderates together in the party, donald trump, when you've got sarah palin on the one hand and scott brown on the
