can a businessman deal with washington politics? >> i think there is a lot of anxiety around certain pieces of his background particularly in foreign policy. his praise for vladmir putin, for instance, has raised some eye brows around capitol hill. senator claire mccaskell said she thought there would be giggled around the globe if he were dealing with foreign leaders. so that i think is an area of real concern that he doesn't have experience in. and some of his stancings are pretty controversial. for instance, he said he would build a wall along the southern border with mex coand deport all the illegal immigrants. that doesn't bode well for trying to reach some compromise on the overhaul of the system and lawmakers have said they don't think anything would happen on that if trump were elected president. >> and what former mexican president fox saying no way mexico would pay for the wall. >> i think the payment of that could become contentious among other things. it seems hard to imagine that congress would appropriate funding for t

i talked to the washington post, done various interviews. but i can say all day that muslims unequivocally condemn terrorism, and somebody that is not muslim, i have very little legitimacy, apart from the data. it's important, but not as compelling as the genuine emotional fear and anger that i've seen from talking to mainstream muslim leaders. who i think are understandably concerned that there is a media motif of an angry muslim. you go on fox news and become angry, you only serve to further the stereotype among angry muslims. but there is anger that is anger about attacks on your religion. then there is anger, that is equally genuine, that is towards group like isis or dyess. -- or daesh. there has been a lot of understandable hesitation about whether that's a good idea. i think given what i've shown you today, the opportunity, the time has come for that type of corrective discourse. the majority of americans now have this conspiracy theory in their heads. you can simply throw facts at the problem. some recent research coming out of polit

we have people in washington that don't care right now. their argument is i don't want to deal with the issue hank just raised because i might lose my next election so we will figure it out but just not now. it has been happening for way too long. one of the reasons it's happening is because the federal government has nothing to stop it from spending money. they can keep printing money and borrowing money, but not forever. the have been doing that for a long time under both parties. under this president, he has grown the debt more than every other president before him combined. the other thing that is driving it is that in less than five years, 83% of our budget 83% of the federal budget will be made up of four things. medicare, medicaid, social security, and the interest on the debt. that means with the other 17% we're going to have to fund our roads, and our safety net programs, and the u.s. military, and everything else the government does. that's not sustainable. that's a debt crisis. let me tell you what's going to happen. the people

joining me from washington, our cnn political director, mr. david chalian, and cnn's chief political analyst who you will see also until the wee hours tonight, gloria borger. so great to have both of you on. david chalian, to you first, what are the top three things you will be watching for? >> well, start, brooke, with what you just read there in your intro, which is independents. i believe that -- one of the first things i'll look at is to see how independents split here. in our last tracking poll, they were splitting between the two parties. they can choose to play in either the republican or the democratic party. which one do they choose to play in and how does that affect the trump and sanders vote totals? those are the candidates that have been drawing from the independents. so that is the first thing i'm watching for. i'm also watching for what the voters tell us they're looking for. this is the head versus heart argument. i want to see, are new hampshire voters coming out tonight to back the person they think has the best chance of win

. >> cnn washington correspondent, joe johns. i think i heard your voice in that room, joe. what was he doing the morning after the cnn town hall? >> reporter: well, for one thing i think he was just making his appearance felt here in south carolina. there has been this running narrative in the pall meadow state that bernie sanders has been writing off south carolina because hillary clinton has such a big lead in the polls and that has been sort of spurred by her strong support in the african american community. sanders, this morning saying he has not been writing off south carolina but also tipping his hat to the idea that he might have to worry about doing better in some other states. listen. >> we came to south carolina and if you look at the polls we were like 7, 8, 9% in the ebolapolls. we were 60/70 points behind. we have picked up a lot of support and closed the gap very significantly. but this from day one was going to be a very difficult state for us. we're not writing off south carolina. >> so, if you look at his schedule, it tells a slightly different story. after

she joins us from washington. what are the latest details? >> reporter: we know justice scalia went to texas on friday for a hunting trip at a secluded rezorts. he had dinner on friday night. the ranch owner had been speaking to reporters and said scalia was entertaining and engaged throughout the dinner. around 9:00 p.m. he said he had a long week and wanted to get a good sleep. a separate source tells evan perez that scalia said he wasn't feeling well on friday. the next day the range owner checked on scalia because he didn't show up for breakfast and lunch and found him in bed lying in repose. the sheets weren't wrinkled, no signs of foul play. it appears he died in his sleep of natural causes and the family has reportedly requested for him not to have an autopsy. >> in terms of political fallout, a fight brewing over the successor between the white house and republicans. any timetable as to how it could play out? >> likely it will be within the next month we'll hear about a nomination based on previous nominations coming from president ob

when he got to washington, he said, what you bring to washington? he said, i guess arithmetic because we are going to make it at up for the american people. that is what happened. after eight years, 23 million new jobs. most importantly, and this is what i want you to hear because this is what we were able to accomplish and must do again. incomes went up for everyone. everyone. not just those at the top. middle-class families. working people. most importantly, because of my long advocacy on behalf of kids, we lifted more people out of poverty in those eight years than in any other recent time in american history. that matters. and we ended up with a balanced budget and surplus. i think that is not only a good record for bill clinton, that is a good record for the democratic party and what we stand for and what we can do together. now, i wish this were a story that continued to have happy chapters to it. but along came the republicans again. we must never, ever let anybody new hampshire forget that trickle down economics was a failure then and it wou
