it was disappointing to republicans in washington. i spoke to two senior republican official who hoped that new hampshire would almost narrow the republican field and a party would able to quickly coalesce behind an alternative to donald trump and that alternative being marco rubio. we saw a wave of support come his way after iowa. but what the real fear is now in republican circles is this fight for are the establishment lane, the fight to be the donald trump alternative is going to last weeks and weeks and weeks. what did this mean for the bush and rubio campaigns going forward? they don't believe -- neither of them believe that john kasich present as serious threat in south carolina given that the electorate there is much more conservative than john kasich, who ran as a much more moderate candidate. both of them see each other as their biggest threat going forward. expect the race between bush and rubio to get much more intense in the come beiing weeks and wh that does for the fight against donald trump really throws that in disarr

it's not just making washington look dysfunctional. and actual -- it actually hurts the ability for the federal government to be more effective and efficient with tax dollars. look at the department of defense. if you have a continuing resolution instead of an actual d.o.d. appropriations bill signed into law, then they can actually do planning. you know, companies plan years in advance. a government agency should actually be laying out plans as well about how to best use taxpayer dollars. but if they don't know what their budget's going to look like until literally the day before it's about to take effect, it's real hard for them to do planning and a lot of times what they do is suspend contracts and then they have to start that contract back up again, even though they know that ultimately something's going to get worked out. they can't do long-term planning. and it costs even more money. to do the same thing, so it does lead to a less efficient government, to not have a functioning appropriations process. it's why we want passionatel

he will hold a rally and then return back to washington, d.c. to cast some votes tomorrow. >> he lost to donald trump by more than 60,000 votes. donald trump had more than 60,000 votes ahead of ted cruz. clearly a very significant number. i want to go over to john king right now. the evangelical vote very important in south carolina as it was in iowa, not so much in new hampshire. >> no, not so much in new hampshire, but ted cruz stuck waiting fo are a number of mall towns to report, but it looks like ted cruz is at the moment is holding on to third place. some small places in there could change the math, but if he comes out third, what does he do, he has a win in iowa and a show in new hampshire. they go on to south carolina and why is this a big state, often decisive, but not this year, but ted cruz in iowa with the evangelicals. let's look at the population here. the deeper the color the more evangelicals you find. let me shrink this down. the big ad war is here. this is critical to a christian conservative. this part of the state is critical

people look to washington and washington is living in a very different world. on top of all of that is the issue of fairness, the issue of a rigged economy, which essentially means people are working ordinary hours -- working hours for low wages. and there is the issue of wealth and power, which dictates what goes on in america. we have town meetings. the general feeling is there should be more equality. when they look at wall street what they see is a rigged economy. they see a corrupt campaign finance system. all wrapped up in wall street. what i can tell you from personal experience -- the banking committee, which became the financial committee. i was on the committee that dealt with the regulation of wall street. here is the reality that will not shock any american. wall street put billions of dollars in lobbying and campaign contributions into saying you have to get rid of these 1930's regulations. you have to allow commercial banks to merge with investor banks, to merge with large insurance companies. i didn't believe it for one second, not for one second

from today's "washington journal" this is 40 minutes. host: ben pershing's managing editor at national journal and talks about the elegant process by which the democrats will select a candidate. one thing that has some supporters of bernie sanders concerned is that he beat hillary clinton by 20-points in new hampshire, but hillary clinton could lead new hampshire with the same number of delegates because of superdelegates. what is a superdelegate? caller: something in the democratic party. they have something similar in the republican party, but they don't work the same way. for democrats, they are members of the parties, the elites of the party, a little over 700 of them at a 4000 total delegates. the trick is they can support whomever they want. they're not bound by their states, the results of primaries or caucuses. in new hampshire, bernie sanders can win new hampshire and still come out then pure delegates that hillary clinton because superdelegates go the other way. host: a delegate tracker is talking about the delegates in superde

your colleagues in washington. if you are going to have a problem with them, what are you going to say to them as president to get them on board so that we can get legislation passed? >> it's a great question, robert, thank you for asking it. let me focus on two levels, let me explain how we actually change the direction in washington. it's not that i speak with a lack of civility or respect, you have seen in the presidential campaign as other people insult me, i don't respond in kind. i try very much -- the bible talks about if someone treats you unkindly, repay them with kindness. it's like heaping coals on top of their head. that is the standard i have tried to follow. i have not attacked my colleagues in the senate, democrat or republican. even if i disagree with them on the issues i'll tell you why they say ted is unlikable in washington. because i'm actually honoring the commitments that i made to the women and men who elected me. for example, on planned parenthood, i led the fight for us to use the budgetary
