joining me from washington, our cnn political director, mr. david chalian, and cnn's chief political analyst who you will see also until the wee hours tonight, gloria borger. so great to have both of you on. david chalian, to you first, what are the top three things you will be watching for? >> well, start, brooke, with what you just read there in your intro, which is independents. i believe that -- one of the first things i'll look at is to see how independents split here. in our last tracking poll, they were splitting between the two parties. they can choose to play in either the republican or the democratic party. which one do they choose to play in and how does that affect the trump and sanders vote totals? those are the candidates that have been drawing from the independents. so that is the first thing i'm watching for. i'm also watching for what the voters tell us they're looking for. this is the head versus heart argument. i want to see, are new hampshire voters coming out tonight to back the person they think has the best chance of win

the republicans are going after her because they know she will not only be effective in washington but she's our best chance to make sure that the white house stays in democratic hands. >> but that's bernie sanders saying it's very serious today. i know what he said about not caring about the e-mails but today she is saying it's very serious. do you think this is very serious? >> well, i will let senator sanders answer for himself. i was out this weekend here in iowa. we have been having events all week with thousands of people. this doesn't come up. what the voters here care about is affording health care. affording college. affording child care so i'm not hearing about it from the voters here. i think they take a lot of other issues much more seriously. >> i appreciate you being on. thank you very much. coming up in the next hour we'll talk to bernie sanders campaign manager. just ahead how the top republicans spent their day in iowa. all three campaigns in overdrive knocking on doors, making thousands of calls. doing everything they can to nail down votes. we go inside. could protec

it is the election, the primary for the democrats, ryan is with me, cnn commentator and washington correspondent at the new yorker. it's interesting, joe johns told us from one of the polling sites that it looked like to him, this is anecdotal, that voter turnout is very light. >> yeah. >> who does that help, hurt? granted, we don't have the numbers. >> look, so the conventional wisdom which has been wrong in this campaign, but i think it's right in this case, is lower turnout hurts bernie sanders. so, in a lower turnout election you have this core of the democratic party. people that vote in every election, and those voters so far in the first three states have been hillary clinton supporters. in iowa, the sanders campaign predicted that they would lose the campaign under a low turnout scenario. they would tie it under a little higher. and they would win it higher than that. >> this was iowa. >> iowa. and it was obviously in the middle. it was tied of it they nailed that. their projections have been more voters better for sanders, his two core constituencies are young people, millennials, and i

>> well it's no surprise that when you're challenge the washington cartel, when you come to washington, d.c. and challenge a leadership in both parties and then you're in a strong position to become the republican nom nigs for president, people are going to say bad things about you, that shouldn't be a surprise. what's surprising is that marco rubio reacts so poorly to people challenging his record on am nesty. he has a record, he ran for senate in the state of florida as a tea party candidate, as a conservative candidate. he came to washington, d.c., he betrayed that by signing onto the authoring the rubio/schumer amnesty bill. doing barack obama's bidding on providing an amnesty he said he wouldn't do whenever anyone calls him on his record, he gets mad and says that's a lie and so on. marco rubio should just stand up and take responsibility for his position which is that he's a liberal on the issue of am nesty. an issue that's concern to many people that goes to the issue of trust. he said he wouldn't do that. for him to step forward and essentially do barack obama's bidding on an i

your colleagues in washington. if you are going to have a problem with them, what are you going to say to them as president to get them on board so that we can get legislation passed? >> it's a great question, robert, thank you for asking it. >> let me focus on two levels, let me explain how we actually change the direction in washington. it's not that i speak with a lack of civility or respect, you have seen in the presidential campaign as other people insult me, i don't respond in kind. the bible talks about if someone treats you unkindly, repay them with kindness. it's like keeping coals on the top of their head. that is the standard i have tried to follow. i have not attacked my colleagues in the senate, democrat or republican. even if i disagree with them on the issues i'll tell you why they say ted is unlikable in washington. because i'm actually honoring the commitments that i made to the women and men who elected me. for example, on planned parenthood, i used the fight with the budgetary congress to stop gi

our senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is joining us from clinton primary headquarters in new hampshire. what kind of results do they say they're realistically expecting tonight? >> reporter: well, wolf, ever since she stepped foot in the state of new hampshire some eight days ago after iowa, they have been lowering expectations every single day. never mind all the history that the clinton campaign, the clinton family has in this state. of course 1992 is a pivotal moment and 2008 was a pivotal moment for her. they are saying they can't win. when you talk to them privately and some of her supporters, they believe she can win. the polls are all over the board. because of the independent voters we've been talking to and about all day long, some who are playing in the republican primary, they simply don't know but this is much closer than the 25 points would suggest. i am told that most sides believe this is within five points or so and that is not a lot of space or so. if they get out their vote which they have been trying to do, it could be much tighter than some of our suggesti

he will hold a rally and then return back to washington, d.c. to cast some votes tomorrow. >> he lost to donald trump by more than 60,000 votes. donald trump had more than 60,000 votes ahead of ted cruz. clearly a very significant number. i want to go over to john king right now. the evangelical vote very important in south carolina as it was in iowa, not so much in new hampshire. >> no, not so much in new hampshire, but ted cruz stuck waiting fo are a number of mall towns to report, but it looks like ted cruz is at the moment is holding on to third place. some small places in there could change the math, but if he comes out third, what does he do, he has a win in iowa and a show in new hampshire. they go on to south carolina and why is this a big state, often decisive, but not this year, but ted cruz in iowa with the evangelicals. let's look at the population here. the deeper the color the more evangelicals you find. let me shrink this down. the big ad war is here. this is critical to a christian conservative. this part of the state is critical

also cnn political commentator and washington correspondent for the new yorker, ryan lizza. this idea trump could be unstoppable based on not only momentum but math. how much stock do you put in there? >> a lot. we've been grading marco rubio on a curve since iowa, right? he has to consolidate the anti-trump vote and he has to consolidate the republican establishment around him and the donor class and do it basically yesterday. time is running out. in between now and super tuesday is likely to be another trump victory in nevada. bottom line as john pointed out. if you aren't winning, you aren't winning. the most important thing is if cruz can pick up florida and ohio, then he has a shot. then the momentum can change. it's going to be hard for him to pick up ohio if kasich is in the race. frankly, rubio's path is through john kasich. with kasich in the race, it's very, very hard to see how he catches trump. >> maggie, as long as -- to ryan's point, as long as kasich is in the race but also cruz is in the race. the vote is divided. >> the vote is divided although i've been ske

he went on to bash the establishment in washington, the establishment in the media. this is left up to we the people. how much is he thanking the evangelical vote tonight? >> he opened and closed saying, god bless iowa. that was a big message to evangelicals tonight. they propped him up for his win in iowa. he is looking for this support, going forward. especially looking past new hampshire, when the cruz campaign looks for support in south carolina and the southern states. they're going to lean again on evangelicals, very conservative republicans. they want on their side. it's been a big part of the strategy. they've not tried to really appeal to moderate republicans as much. they're going straightforward to the evangelicals. and that seemed to be the message that cruz was sending tonight. >> now, on to new hampshire. sunlen on the ted cruz campaign plane. a terrific report. literally popping champagne onboard as they get ready to take off to new hampshire. >> where is ours? >> we are on for the next 3 1/2 hours. we're going to hear from her when she lands. >> it is

senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny joining us from portsmouth. we learned that bernie sanders gained more ground in iowa after a review of the caucus results? >> reporter: as he presses on here in new hampshire his team is still talking about his team in iowa. the iowa democratic party after they would not review the results for caucus's on monday has made a review of 14 precincts. neither of them turned out to be -- just like they were on that night but in five precincts, there were different results. we're not talking about a lot of delegates here but it is a sliver. the clinton campaign was actually losing .122 state delegate equivalent. so they are at 49.84%. the sanders campaign gained .1053 so they are at 49.59%. bernie sanders did a touch better than we thought on monday night. the outcome is still the same, as far as we know, but this is a sign that the iowa democratic party is willing to look into other precincts, is willing to look into other things. the sanders campaign has not made a big deal about this. we heard him say at the debate
