our senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is joining us from clinton primary headquarters in new hampshire. what kind of results do they say they're realistically expecting tonight? >> reporter: well, wolf, ever since she stepped foot in the state of new hampshire some eight days ago after iowa, they have been lowering expectations every single day. never mind all the history that the clinton campaign, the clinton family has in this state. of course 1992 is a pivotal moment and 2008 was a pivotal moment for her. they are saying they can't win. when you talk to them privately and some of her supporters, they believe she can win. the polls are all over the board. because of the independent voters we've been talking to and about all day long, some who are playing in the republican primary, they simply don't know but this is much closer than the 25 points would suggest. i am told that most sides believe this is within five points or so and that is not a lot of space or so. if they get out their vote which they have been trying to do, it could be much tighter than some of our suggesti

he will hold a rally and then return back to washington, d.c. to cast some votes tomorrow. >> he lost to donald trump by more than 60,000 votes. donald trump had more than 60,000 votes ahead of ted cruz. clearly a very significant number. i want to go over to john king right now. the evangelical vote very important in south carolina as it was in iowa, not so much in new hampshire. >> no, not so much in new hampshire, but ted cruz stuck waiting fo are a number of mall towns to report, but it looks like ted cruz is at the moment is holding on to third place. some small places in there could change the math, but if he comes out third, what does he do, he has a win in iowa and a show in new hampshire. they go on to south carolina and why is this a big state, often decisive, but not this year, but ted cruz in iowa with the evangelicals. let's look at the population here. the deeper the color the more evangelicals you find. let me shrink this down. the big ad war is here. this is critical to a christian conservative. this part of the state is critical

it was disappointing to republicans in washington. i spoke to two senior republican official who hoped that new hampshire would almost narrow the republican field and a party would able to quickly coalesce behind an alternative to donald trump and that alternative being marco rubio. we saw a wave of support come his way after iowa. but what the real fear is now in republican circles is this fight for are the establishment lane, the fight to be the donald trump alternative is going to last weeks and weeks and weeks. what did this mean for the bush and rubio campaigns going forward? they don't believe -- neither of them believe that john kasich present as serious threat in south carolina given that the electorate there is much more conservative than john kasich, who ran as a much more moderate candidate. both of them see each other as their biggest threat going forward. expect the race between bush and rubio to get much more intense in the come beiing weeks and wh that does for the fight against donald trump really throws that in disarr

status quo, people who want things to change, people who are looking the message i'm going to change washington and they're not out for you, there are different prescriptions to the same kind of problem that they're hearing defined by all these candidates. >> interesting talking about donald trump and bernie sanders have something in common. a lot of people who like them are angry and are angry at how things have been going. they like to watch it. we love it in the media. it's good for us. maybe not good for hillary clinton. some would say bad for the democratic party because it would show there's a schism. is that true? >> we had a long fight in 2008 and it didn't work out that. democratic voters wanted to see this young senator barack obama go toe to toe with a heavyweight for all 50 rounds. it's a little bit different now. a little thing i would be worried about if i were the clinton campaign is bernie sanders has raised a large amount in small donations. hillary clinton is reliant on what will be maxed out donors. she's going to have to be watching that as this goes on. the longer it goes,

senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny joining us from portsmouth. we learned that bernie sanders gained more ground in iowa after a review of the caucus results? >> reporter: as he presses on here in new hampshire his team is still talking about his team in iowa. the iowa democratic party after they would not review the results for caucus's on monday has made a review of 14 precincts. neither of them turned out to be -- just like they were on that night but in five precincts, there were different results. we're not talking about a lot of delegates here but it is a sliver. the clinton campaign was actually losing .122 state delegate equivalent. so they are at 49.84%. the sanders campaign gained .1053 so they are at 49.59%. bernie sanders did a touch better than we thought on monday night. the outcome is still the same, as far as we know, but this is a sign that the iowa democratic party is willing to look into other precincts, is willing to look into other things. the sanders campaign has not made a big deal about this. we heard him say at the debate

kathleen parker from "the washington post", jim warren from pointer, and molly hemingway, senior editor at the federalist. kathleen, is rubio trying to portray trump as a loser, something other candidates up until now have been maybe afraid to do? >> well, absolutely. and i'm delighted that e seems to have taken my advice because i wrote a column to that effect, but anyway, yes, basically what he's doing i think is going after trump. he's taunting him because the one thing a bully can't stand is to be taunted, and he's trying to get under trump's skin i think at a deeper level than anyone else has bothered to do previously and why not? trump has been throwing it at him pretty fiercely. he's returning the volley but he's also having a little bit of fun i think. it's a liberation moment for marco rubio who has been accused of being so robotic previously. it seems to be working too. trump cannot stand it and we'll see where it goes. we'll look forward to everyone getting back to being a little more presidential however. >> you think that will actually happen? >> will that actually happen?

joining me from washington, our cnn political director, mr. david chalian, and cnn's chief political analyst who you will see also until the wee hours tonight, gloria borger. so great to have both of you on. david chalian, to you first, what are the top three things you will be watching for? >> well, start, brooke, with what you just read there in your intro, which is independents. i believe that -- one of the first things i'll look at is to see how independents split here. in our last tracking poll, they were splitting between the two parties. they can choose to play in either the republican or the democratic party. which one do they choose to play in and how does that affect the trump and sanders vote totals? those are the candidates that have been drawing from the independents. so that is the first thing i'm watching for. i'm also watching for what the voters tell us they're looking for. this is the head versus heart argument. i want to see, are new hampshire voters coming out tonight to back the person they think has the best chance of win

the republicans are going after her because they know she will not only be effective in washington but she's our best chance to make sure that the white house stays in democratic hands. >> but that's bernie sanders saying it's very serious today. i know what he said about not caring about the e-mails but today she is saying it's very serious. do you think this is very serious? >> well, i will let senator sanders answer for himself. i was out this weekend here in iowa. we have been having events all week with thousands of people. this doesn't come up. what the voters here care about is affording health care. affording college. affording child care so i'm not hearing about it from the voters here. i think they take a lot of other issues much more seriously. >> i appreciate you being on. thank you very much. coming up in the next hour we'll talk to bernie sanders campaign manager. just ahead how the top republicans spent their day in iowa. all three campaigns in overdrive knocking on doors, making thousands of calls. doing everything they can to nail down votes. we go inside. could protec

your colleagues in washington. if you are going to have a problem with them, what are you going to say to them as president to get them on board so that we can get legislation passed? >> it's a great question, robert, thank you for asking it. let me focus on two levels, let me explain how we actually change the direction in washington. it's not that i speak with a lack of civility or respect, you have seen in the presidential campaign as other people insult me, i don't respond in kind. i try very much -- the bible talks about if someone treats you unkindly, repay them with kindness. it's like heaping coals on top of their head. that is the standard i have tried to follow. i have not attacked my colleagues in the senate, democrat or republican. even if i disagree with them on the issues i'll tell you why they say ted is unlikable in washington. because i'm actually honoring the commitments that i made to the women and men who elected me. for example, on planned parenthood, i led the fight for us to use the budgetary

he met just a little while ago, earlier today, in washington, d.c. with african-american civil rights leaders to talk about endorsement. not clear who is going to endorse, but the naacp, the urban league, reverend al sharpton and many others. they're pushing hard now. as to hillary clinton's latest ad, i think is something we also have to point out. an ad running in nevada right now. and it pulls on the heart strings, reaching out to latino voters in a very sort of sentimental way. this is a 10-year-old girl, telling hillary clinton on camera that her parents got a deportation letter, and hillary clinton's response. listen. >> feel really, really strongly that you're being very brave. and you have to be brave for them too. because they want you to be happy. they want you to be successful. they don't want you to worry too much. let me do the worrying. i'll do all the worrying. is that a deal? >> so neck and neck in nevada. and you can tell it by the tv ads and everything else that's going on, jim. >> joe johns, thank you. john, if i could go back to t

big money controls what goes on in washington. every american understands that. you have to be very naive not to believe that the wealthiest and most powerful institutions in this country are contributing huge amounts of money, for what reason? for the heck of it? they just want to have fun and contribute that money? of course they expect something. but that is different than saying this candidate took that amount of money and voted that way. that is not what i'm saying. what i am saying is you have a corrupt campaign finance system. i will do everything i can to overturn this disastrous citizens united supreme court decision. and in fact, i believe we should have public funding of elections. >> but your campaign did send out this excerpt from elizabeth warren, and she directly said to clinton -- >> well, that's elizabeth's point. i think the point we wanted to note -- i suspect the point that the campaign tried to make was to identify a particular vote that secretary clinton cast. by the way, they're sending out ten things a day attacking me, just to set the rec

republicans in washington, d.c. are starting to tell republican senators that they don't have to go to the convention if they are the nominee. they should think of running against you if you are the nominee. that combined with marco rubio doing the never trump hashtag. do you think republicans are violating the pledge? >> totally. if they want to play the game i can play it better than they k. and i have more people than they do. doing that is a total violation of the pledge, yes. >> how do you see this possible hypocrisy of the pledge? >> i think republicans are headed for a split whether trump is the nominee or not. this has gone so deep for so long. if trump is the nominee, there's no way on god's green earth that many rank and file republicans can vote for him or go to the convention or do the things they normally document if he's not the nominee, a lot of the voters will be so angry they will sit out the election. the republican party has a big, fat problem. >> already. brian, real quick. >> i was going to say,
