>> the confirmation of this case coming from the last few hours in dallas. they say that the patient contracted the zika virus after having sexual inter course with someone who had been in the country in this case we're told it was venezuela. this has happened before in 2008. a colorado researcher passed on the virus to his wife after he returned from a trip where again the zika virus was known to exist. the authorities say this will obviously change the mention that they're putting out to people. not only do they need to take protection against areas where there is a risk, wearing long sleeves, spraying themselves with deet and avoid areas late at night and early in the morning when mosquitoes are most active. now they're saying if you have a partner who has been to an area where this is prevalent you have to use a con dome to protect yourself and them as well. the authorities in dallas are saying this was not transferred by a mosquito. as you see, it comes just a day after the "world health organization" declares the zika virus a global emergency. >> thank

what advice do you think they should give in light of this case in dallas? >> as i said, the important advice is to take steps to reduce the transmission. since mosquitoes are by far the major routes, then avoiding contact and reducing the likelihood of acquiring the virus by biting, this is how the virus is first acquired. but there has already been advice give to people to take care, take precautions, use co condoms and abstinence when appropriate at least for a period of time after their return to the infected areas. the virus persists in the body for a week to ten days as long as precautions are taken over that period, just a shade longer, then the risk should be reduced to almost negligible. and really, just reinforcing for people there are other opportunities for the virussal wety at this time--albeit at this time we believe it is small, but they are there. information, as with all of these sorts of infections, information is key to let people know what they can do to stop acquiring the virus themselves and second, from passing it on to others. >> than

., all infected overseas, except for one sexually transmitted case in dallas. now, all week this week, our dr. jon lapook has been covering zika at the place that the outbreak is at its worst, in brazil. jon, you've been working on why florida is taking this action. what have you learned? >> reporter: scott, i think it's an attempt to stay ahead of the problem by lowering the odds that zika virus will enter the local mosquitoes population in florida. so far, there's no evidence that those mosquitoes have the zika virus, but here's how it could happen: a person gets infected with zika virus in brazil, comes up to the united states, flies into florida. now, it stays in the bloodstream for a week or maybe longer, so a local mosquito in florida bites that infected person, picks up the virus, turns around and bites an uninfected person. now you've got local spread of zika virus, something that they definitely don't want. >> pelley: well, jon, nobody has more experience dealing with this than the brazilians. what are they doing there that we might see here later? >>
